Patrice -- I have a John Beck, b. 6 May 1869 in Harristown, Macon, Illinois; d. 16 Jun 1950 in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois; m. Carrie Belle Miller (my great grandfather's sister) 3 Sep 1891, probably in Logan County, Illinois. I have info on six children and some later generations. Is this a connection for you? Guy I. Hi Guy, This item published 27 Feb 1896 in the Wayne County Press was written by Mrs. Alice Walker who mentions her Mother Mrs. Mary Beck. "Mrs. Alice Walker writes from Elkhart: We came here from Wayne county nine years ago. My husband is farming and raising a few hogs for the market; we are doing very well. Jas. A. Burroughs is living with us at present, so we get to read his Press, which is like a letter from home. Mrs. Mary Beck, my mother, and two brothers, Sol and Sherman, are running a barber shop, and doing well. Our family consist of five children three girls and two boys; all are going to school. Our oldest is a girl of seventeen." Are you related to them? I'm trying to find out if this is Elkhart, IN or Elkhart, IL which is located in Logan Co. IL. My reason for locating Elkhart is to find more information on the James A. Burroughs who is mentioned. Thanks, Lois Branch
Hi all, Had to share a wonderful experience I had today. As I drove back from my first ever visit to Springfield I decided to take a chance and see if I could find Old Union Cemetery in Lincoln. I guessed correctly and found it. When I located the office I met the most helpful young men around. I knew that many of my relatives were buried there but the genealogy books don't list them. I knew one date so we went to the actual burial record and found many of the others in a family plot. These guys actually escorted me to the area where my relatives were buried. We went back to the office and found others and went walking again. If only others could be so helpful. These folks gave me answers that have escaped me for years. They didn't even think I was crazy. If only other places were as friendly Patrice Wilson Still searching for Donegan (all variations), Stone, Beck, Orendorff, and Burton
Wow! Great Job. I used links I never used before. Better, for us elders. I will visit more often now that it is easier to find things. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I think I will add some "stuff" now that it looks so good. Blue Skies, K. Oliver Stockton
That's my goal, cleaner, easier to find things, also as much useful information as I can find. I skip the bells, whistles and fancy stuff because many people are still on slow dial up and some have disabilities which make the fancy stuff very annoying. If you have any suggestions for links [to public pages] that would be useful to add let me know. I make the page my home page and tend to add the links I use a lot. I also try to add things I look for on other pages. I will probably be out of contact most of next week. I'm FINALLY moving. Note that I am in the processing of changing over my email to [email protected] which will outlive the ISP since that will change also. Cheryl, I like the new look of the main page. It makes everything VERY easy to find. Thanks for your constant efforts to improve and expand the Logan County site. Bill Detmers LCGHS
Cheryl, I would second Bill's comment. Logan County has always been one of the best county web pages in the USGenWeb. One other I visit regularly which is as good is Kosciusko County, Indiana. http://www.rootsweb.com/~inkosciu/ It is always an extreme contrast when you visit some of the county pages which have very minimal information on-line. One suggestion that may help others would be a listing of Logan County ancestors and the counties they came from. Often others follow along and it might be a clue to others to check when looking for where their Logan County ancestors came from. Particularly in earlier years. Hi Cheryl, I think the main page is wonderful but then I've always felt your website was extremely good. Hello all: This Monday, 11 October 2004 beginning at 7:00pm, the Sangamon County Genealogical Society will host its monthly meeting. The meeting is held at Springfield's Public Library, Lincoln Library, in the Carnigee Room South. This month's topic is a Show and Share Night. We invite all attending to bring an item relating to their family history which can be viewed by all and share a story about the item at the meeting. Items such as photos, newspaper clippings, family group sheets, family trees and other items relating to family history research are among the ideas of what to bring Monday night. The stories can be told to the entire group or we can break off into smaller groups. If there are any "brick walls" we can help participants climb over, through new or trusted researching methods, we will work to lead people over easier paths. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please do bring an item so we can all share in this experience. We hope to see several people at this meeting. In the process I came across the MANN surname in early issues of The Lincoln Herald which is on microfilm at the Library. In the 11 May 1859 edition, Michael Mann and Sarah Mann were invovled in a case in the Circuit Court of Logan County. You can find the reference on page 2 column 7. In the 08 June 1859 edition, Michael and Sarah were involved in a Chancery Sale. You can find the reference on page 4 column 2. In the 15 June 1859 edition, H L Mann, John Mann, John Mann, Jr. were listed at least once in the tax lists. The references for these are page 1 column 1, page 1 column 4, page 4 column 1, and page 4 column 2. Look for more than one occurance of those names in those columns. Perhaps these will be clues to probate records that will answer your questions. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
