I have that Robert Turley's daughter, Catherine Alice Turley married Darius Buckles, so I think you have a match with the Robert Turley who is 85 in the 1920 census. The relationship (Robert Turley married Sarah Rankin, their daughter Catherine Alice married Darius Buckles, son of John and Esther Jane Scroggin Buckles) comes from the book "Humphrey Scroggin of Logan Co. Illinois, His Ancestors & Descendants". Bill Scroggin

His listing only shows his birthdate of Nov. 9, 1834 but he shares the plot with his wife, Sarah J. (Rankin) (dob Nov. 13, 1834 dod August 25, 1912). I am looking for Robert's date of death or burial. I believe he was the son of James O. Turley who farmed in that county. There is only one Illinois death record on file for a Robert Turley and I wrote for the certificate which shows a birthdate of 11/20/1854 and a date of death as June 15, 1925. But the 1920 US census shows my Robert as age 85 and a widower and living with his daughter, Alice Buckles in Niantic, Macon co., so I don't think this is the same person Would there be any information in your records or where can I go to find out? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. John Merrill Turley ("John"): Dear John: I am John Wilham of Heyworth, IL. Your James Turley is likely one of the earliest settlers in Logan county. If you find more information, I hope that you will share it with me. I have the following to offer you. I have some of the records of The Predestinarian Baptist Church near Lake Fork, IL. I have them from two sources. I have a printout sent to me by Cheryl Rothwell which has the most information. I do not have it digitally. You might also just ask for "Predestinarian Baptist Church", and I think you will find a website by a minister from Carthage, IL where one of the churches of that name still exists. I am sure that Cheryl Rothwell will read this and attach the digital file to you. There are several TURLEY's mentioned in the congregation which dates back at least 1827. I have several ancestors and relatives in the congregation including Michael MANN, LUCAS, GIRTMAN, BOWMAN, COPELAND, and COLLINS. There were so few people around back then, that we may find a connection between the Turley's and my relatives. For now, I list the Turley's that turned up in the congregation over the years: Lucy Turley "Joined Jan/1830" James L. Turley "Dead" Agnes Turley "Dead" Sara Turley "Dismissed 1841") Ann Turley "Dismissed (presented letter) Margaret P. Lois -- Bingo! Let me see if I can lay this out for you: First of all, there is a typo in your item from the Wayne County Press -- your Mrs. Alice WALKER is actually Mrs. Alice WALLER. She was the daughter of James R. and Mary J. BECK. In the 1880 census for Lamard twp, Wayne County, their family includes: James R. BECK, age 44 Mary J. BECK, age 46 Jeptha B. BECK, age 18 Hester A. BECK, age 17 Nancy BECK, age 14 Sherman BECK, age 12 Soloman [sic] BECK, age ?? Evidently, Alice was already out of the household and on her own (married?) by 1880. In the 1900 census, Mary BECK (age 67) and her sons Sherman and Solomon appear on the census for Elkhart, Logan County, Illinois. Sherman and Solomon are both listed as barbers. Now -- how does this family tie in to the BURROUGHS? Well, it's a little convoluted, but here's the way it works: 1) Alice BECK married Amos WALLER, the older step brother of James A. BURROUGHS. 2) Hester Ann BECK, Alice's younger sister, married Nathan E. MILLER, who was the older brother of my great grandfather, Oliver Perry Morton MILLER. Oliver married Fannie Amanda ALLEN, who was the daughter of Mehetable "Hettie" C. BURROUGHS, the older half sister of James A. BURROUGHS. In the 1884-1886 time frame, the entire MILLER clan removed from Wayne County to Logan County -- lock, stock, and barrel! Amos and Alice WALLER and their family also made the move shortly thereafter. Therefore, according to your 1896 letter, James A. Burroughs went from Wayne County to Logan County to live with his step brother's family. However, his sister-in-law, Alice WALLER, was also the sister of the wife of his niece's brother-in-law! Got that? To add to the confusion, Maude WALLER, the second child of Amos and Alice WALLER, married George Thomas MILLER, the son of Nathan's and Oliver's older brother, William J. MILLER. When these folks talked about the extended family, they really meant extended! As always, Guy I. Colby IV Irving, TX -------------- Original message from [email protected]: -------------- > Hi Guy, > This item published 27 Feb 1896 in the Wayne County Press was written by Mrs. > Alice Walker who mentions her Mother Mrs. Mary Beck. > "Mrs. Alice Walker writes from Elkhart: We came here from Wayne county nine > years ago. Patrice -- Looks like it's a different John Beck. Since he married into one of my collateral lines, I have not really researched his family, but I strongly suspect that he was the son of Richard and Sarah Beck, with siblings Phebe, Minerva, Richard, Margaret, Walter, Peter, and Cora (1880 census for Niantic, Macon, Illinois). In the 1900 census, he is living with his wife (Carrie Belle Miller, my great grandfather's sister) and their two eldest children (Otis and Winnie) in Laenna twp, Logan County, Illinois. He was not mulatto. Guy I. Colby IV Irving, TX -------------- Original message from "Patrice Wilson" : -------------- This is possibly a hit. Was your John Beck mulatto. If so then could be a match. I somehow didn't see the inquiry from "Patrice" about the Beck Family. I did see the reply by Guy I. Colby IV, Louis Branch, and Cheryl Rothwell. I have a whole line of distant cousins sharing my gg grandfather George Wiedel/Wilhelm/WILHAM. In fact I have a genealogy study on this family who ranged from Lake Fork, Elkhart, Buffalo Hart, Cornland, Riverton, Rochester, & Buffalo, all east or North of Springfield, Sangamon County, IL. I would be glad to look up for you if you have a specific question, or can resend the original question. JOHN DEAN WILHAM
