Someone has to tell the tombstone people to go out and put the death date on the stone. In more than a few cases no one thought to do it or there was no one left locally. You can't assume he is buried there but he probably is. You might check with Manleys in Lincoln to see if they have any Carlyle records since they are from the area and do a great many of the local stones. The cemetery district is probably your best bet though. I don't recall receiving your response to my inquiry but found your note when browsing the mailing list. Thanks for your info. I do have the church information from the mailing list and I believe Lucy Turley was Robert's sister. Just think it strange that there is a headstone in Carlyle cemetery with a birth date for Robert but no death date - do we even know if he was buried there next to his wife, Sarah? John
The guy who created census tools added a cemetery tool which I told you about last month. Now he has added a ship's manifest tool. All of them are in spreadsheet form. He has a page about compatibility. http://censustools.com/ In his newsletter for this month he has an interesting article regarding online sources of original documents. He's pretty candid about them. I don't know this guy but he seems to do a good job creating useful forms for genealogists. If you find them useful and you can donate to him that spurs such people on to creating more useful forms. Another tool you might find useful is Census Mate at http://censusmate.com/index.html His web site also has some census information that you might find useful. The trackers strike me as particularly useful. I do not know if they are related. AS far as I can tell john Andrew Tomlinson married Joanna Johnston in Ross County Ohio and only had 1 son named Uriah. There daughter Martha married my Ggrandpas brother Samuel Theobald in Lincoln. I believe they may have lived and worked on the T.H. Price farm by New Holland with Sam's dad John. I have been to the Historical Society many times and the library looking through what they have. My Great aunt's cape is hanging on the wall. My 2nd cousin volunteers there and just proofed the school book. I have looked for death certificates but not probate records. I should try that. Thanks for the tips. You are correct about the current owner of the house on Lawrence curve. She lives out in the Northeast. I know that Charles had one son that died as a young baby. His daughters families have carried ownership through the years. I think she is having research done on the land and family too. Pulaski. I don't believe he was ever married. His name was Clarence and he had a brother Elmer. He was born in Mt. Pulaski but that family could be the reason the Tomlinsons came from Ohio. I assume you checked with county clerk for death certificates. There are old newspapers at the Lincoln library and other old newspapers available by interlibrary loan if you are up to searching for obits. The LCGHS has old plat maps which might help you locate the property and then you could see what is available on the property. Sometimes the property files contain useful information. Probate files might be helpful too. My plat map, 8 years old, seems to indicate the house on the curve is owned by a woman, not named Lawrence. There are probably more houses than you would think that were built in the 1840s and 1850s still standing and lived in. I am often in one in Mt. Pulaski. Cheryl, The farm house on Lawrence curve is where they lived. Charles S Lawrence was my ggrandmas uncle. I am not sure where John T. and Fannie Lawrence lived. After John and Charles dad passed away around 1864 they inherited the farm which was around 2000 acres. John may have had a farm off of 5th st in Lincoln. I know John Theobald and Fannie Lawrence Theobald had a farm they inherited there and lost it in the depression. They may have inherited it after John T Lawrence Passed away. Fannie Lawrence Theobald was the daughter of Fannie Lawrence. I know the farm is still in family hands. Which is amazing considering the house was built in the early 1840's by Theodore Lawrence. The John Theobald that was married to Jerusha lived in Lake Fork after they married. He was born in Germany in 1825, came to the US in 1827(according to the 1910 census) He was married to Martha Barr Theobald before Jerusha. I believe John and Martha lived in Middletown for a while and then New Holland. Richmond Grove is where Martha is buried. John may be buried in Carlyle Cemetery with Jerusha. No one ever put a death date on the tombstone. John Tomlinson came from Ohio as did John Theobald around 1870. He was in the Union Army in Ohio. He has a veteran headstone in Richmond Grove Cemetery. I think there may be family still in the New Holland, Lincoln area. There is a Uriah Tomlinson that may be a son buried there close to John Tomlinson. There were flowers of the same kind by both of their headstones this summer. I was kind of hoping maybe they were on the list here also and they could fill in some holes for me. Thank you for the tip on the alternate spelling of Jerusha's name. I did not know that and will try. I know that the Theobald name has also been spelled Tevault. Thank you again. The answer to both of your questions, Bill, is to contact the cemetery district. I don't know if you'll have much luck with Turley but I'd think their records for Mt. Pulaski would be pretty good. BTW, there are more than a few missing stones at Carlyle and Steenbergen too if you are going way back and both would be potential locations for your ancestors. Logan County Cemeteries District 198 Cobblestone Avenue Lincoln, IL 62656 217 732-2372 It is possible, if you got the dates from the cemetery listing, that there was a typo or the stone was not terribly readable. If you think that is the case let me know what you find. Is anyone else researching the Charles S Lawrence, John T Lawrence, Wilson Campbell, George Campbell, and John Theobald families in Logan county? John Theobald had married a Jerusha Johnson in 1897. They lived in Lake Fork until she died in 1911. Another brick wall is John Tomlinson who died around 1918 or 1919. He is buried in Richmond grove Cemetery. I have been to the Historical Society and the library and have not had much success finding information on them other than census records. Thank you, Darin
Since this cemetery seems to have many missing headstones, would the Cemetery District have records of all who are buried there? If so, how do I contact them? Bill Scroggin
I am interested in confirming dates of death for two people buried in Mount Pulaski Cemetery. I am pretty sure that they died outside of Logan County, but I see conflicting dates of death on both. Is there a caretaker to write at Mount Pulaski Cemetery? Bill Scroggin
There are two Thomases on the 1850 census: Thomas, John 180A, Thomas, Mary J. 201B. On the 1855 state census there are: Joseph W. Thomas Township 17 - Range 1 A. J. Thomas Township 21 - Range 1 John R. Thomas Township 18 - Range 2 Hiram Thomas Township 19 - Range 2 John Thomas Township 19 - Range 3 Eli Thomas Township 21 - Range 4 Isaiah Thomas Township 21 - Range John R. and Hiram could be in the area of Downing Cemetery which is practically on the Range 2, Township 18/Township 19 line. I have not run across a Thomas in connection with my ancestors in that area. The obituaries are posted on the Rootsweb message board for Logan County.
Over the past week, I have posted obituaries, mainly of people who lived in the Mount Pulaski or Elkhart townships and died between about 1930 - 1970. If you are related to anyone in those obituaries, please let me know if the information from the newspapers is correct. Bill Scroggin
All the obits appeared on this list too Bill. Messages list subscribers post on the message boards also appear on this list.
