    3. The main page for that township map is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/LoganMap.html The townships haven't changed since they were formed, off the top of my head, in 1863. Before that there were Precincts. Sounds like your relatives passed through on their way to the free land in Kansas. There was no census between 1870 and 1880. Illinois stopped doing state censuses with the one in 1865. Perhaps someone can check the 1876 history to see if they are listed there for you. I am not at my desk at the moment or I would. There is a later history that could be checked for the Bennett family. 1. Kinfolks in Logan County
    2. Thanks, Cheryl Rothwell, for the web address that revealed the township map of Logan County. I printed it up because relatives on both of my parents' sides lived there at one time. But I wasn't sure just when the map was drawn up--and would like to know. On my father's side, there was Andrew J. GOBLE, who shows up as a farmer in Eminence Twp. on the 1870 census. He was then 38; the census shows him as being born in Ills., but that should be Indiana, as his parents lived in Morgan County, IN, after coming from North Carolina in the 1830s. There is no listing of real and personal estate for him in 1870, but his wife Cynthia shows $700 in personal estate. Their two older children were born in Indiana, but the youngest, ages 3 and 1, were born in Illinois. Andrew Goble apparently didn't remain for long in Logan, because in 1880 the family (parents and five children) was living in Lyon County, KS, where Andrew was a farmer. No luck yet in finding the family in 1900 and later. If anybody knows anything about this family in Logan County, please let me know. On my mother's side, it was George F. BENNETT, who was 44 and a miller at Atlanta in 1880. He and his wife then had six children, all marked as being born in Ohio. George was born in Vermont and lived in Champaign and Union counties,OH, in 1850-1870. I am not sure how long George lived in Logan County. By 1900 he was into insurance and living in Lawrence Co., KS, with a son. He was still there in 1910, but his wife (Orpha Marsh) had died. Don't know where or when George died and is buried. Earlier this year I corresponded with John Wilham while hoping to learn more about George Bennett and family, but nothing new turned up. I later learned that two children (Frederick and Georgiana) graduated from the University of Illinois, and a daughter, Martha (Bennett) Miller, became a DAR member based on the service of her Bennett great-grandfather. If anyone has knowledge of these Bennetts, please let me know. Corban Goble, Bowling Green, KY.

    3. You can do this same thing by using the an ASCII Chart as you type. For instance the euros is made by holding the alt key down and typing 0128 on the keypad. The umlat u is made by holding the alt key down and typing 129 ; the is alt 132 or simply use "ae" for . and "ue" for . If you need a specific one, please let me know and I can send it to you. 3. That's a very good idea John. There are also maps out there which tell you the shortcuts to such symbols. Since I use the degree sign all the time I know that ° can be created by holding down ALT and typing 248 on the numeric keypad [NOT the numbers on the regular keyboard]. I have memorized the ones I use over the years but you can also print yourself a cheat sheet and tape it to your computer [as I did for years]. There are some variations but one source of these is: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid1_gci847800,00.html Note also that using my way works quite well in plain text [which is what the mailing lists are done in] and in the forums I run but may not work in all programs whereas John's method with give you the character map for the font you are using in that program. 2. Hi, What a wealth of information. Thank you so much. William and Jane (Geddas) Green, both born England are my GGG Grandparents. They had at least four sons: William, Thomas G., Samuel F., and John Henry Green. Thomas married Ellen Kelsey, daughter of James H. and Ruth Kelsey. The 1876 map on the Logan County Website shows James H. Kelsey living in Orvil. The Civil War records show Samuel enlisting from Sugar Creek and being buried in Bethel Cemetery along with his parents. Thank you again for your help. Happy Holidays, Lois

This may or may not be new to you, but here is what little I found. Emden is on the west edge of Orvil Township. In the reprint of the 1873 plat map, most of the southwest half of the township was owned by William Scully. A man named William Green owned 160 acres, the east 1/4 of Section 33 north, Orvil township (survey township 22 north), which abuts Tazewell County. I did not see the names Kelsey or Robertson as owner of any of the Orvil township land. That would suggest that if they lived in Orvil, they would have been tenant farmers, pretty common for that area. Same result looking at the 1893 plat map for Orvil - William Green owns the same farm, but I do not see Kelsey or Robertson as farm owners. But the 1893 atlas also has a Historical Directory of individuals. William Green is not shown. There is a W.S Green listed as a farmer and stock raiser in Section 36 of Broadwell township, P.O. Lincoln, but this is a different person - born 1868 and to the county in 1892. There was a James Green at the opposite corner of Logan County. Shown as a farmer and stock raiser in Lake Fork Twp, Sec. 22, born 1832 in Ireland and came to the county in 1858.No Kelsey or Robertson listing. The book I have also shows the 1910 plat. This issue has a "patrons' reference directory", but none of your three names are mentioned. The former 160 acres owned by William Green is now listed to William Baldwin. I did spot a rural church location at the southwest corner of Section 1 on the 1910 plat, but the name is not identified. However, the 1982 History of Logan County, p. 104 confirms that a Bethel Church was 4 1/2 miles east of Emden, beginning with an 1853 log church. It was replaced with a new building in 1873 and "is still in use today (abt 1981). The story says the congregation was an offshoot from "the old Sugar Creek Church", at a more convenient location for 19 named charter members with names of Ryan, Shirley, Waters, Miller, Sumner, Rhyan, Bowles, and Shirley. The 1878 History of Logan County lists several Green families and one Kelsy, but no Robertson. The ones in Orvil Township: Green, John H. renter, Sect 33 north (the Orvil political township is 7 miles N-S, so includes the two each of survey townships Secs. 31-36. the "north" indicates it is at the top of the political township, hence on the north line of Logan County), P.O Emden, republican, liberal, from Massachusetts. Green, John J., renter, Sec. 33, P.O. Hartsburg, republican, liberal, from New York. Green, Thomas G., renter, Sec. 33 north, P.O. Emden, republican, liberal. Green, William, farmer and stock raiser, Sec. 33 north, P.O. Emden. Born England on March 12, 1810, to US in 1853, republican, liberal, married Jane Geddees on Aub. 14, 1832. She was born in England June 12, 1810. Had 6 children, 4 dead and two living (Thomas and John) Kelsy, James H. farmer, ,Sec. 4, P.O. Emden; democrat; Christian; from New York. The index shows one carpenter named Green in the 1878 listing and a farmer named Green in East Lincoln township. and a widow Green in Laenna Township who was from Maine. Also, the Logan County rolls of the Civil War include the names of Joseph T., Thomas G, Oorlando, Hiram, and Samuel F. Green, together with their date of entry and death or mustering out. Unfortunately, I have no information on whether Bethel church still operates, or where its records might be. Good Luck! George Irwin -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I assume that is the naming point for Delavan prairie, but am not sure how large an area would have gone by the name at that time. It could be that a large area of all three counties might have been so named. A large part of that area was purchased from the government by Irish landowner Thomas Scully for $1.25 per acre in the mid-1800s, drained with the help of immigrant labor, and tenant farmed ever since. The village of Emden in Logan County is about 5 miles south and three east of Delavan. The village of San Jose is 5 miles south and 3 miles west of Delavan, and sits astride the Logan/Mason line. Both villages are in Prairie Creek Township, the northwest corner of Logan County. It is also conceivable that much of the western half of Logan County could have been included under the name. I would suggest that you contact the County Clerk of Logan County in Lincoln and the Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society for further searching. See the website for contact information. The Lincoln Public Library has several county histories written between the 1880s and 1911 which might identify the area for the Delavan prairie. So it is possible that churches in either village could be what you are looking for. Or it could be that a rural church could have existed somewhere in the area. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
