    1. Stepgrandchildren
    2. Cheryl, I knew you meant "Step." I'm sure everyone knew you meant "STEP." It is so easy to slip/error when there are soooo many marriages, names, dates, children, etc. And, "Thank You," for your input on Mary Etta Jones and her 3 marriages. Nieces, nephews and All the theories from everyone are interesting! Thanks, Joan Lund, for checking the Josiah's Richards children. Your suggestion on working backwards is the path to follow. "The 1918 Mysterious Mrs. M. Thompson of Lincoln Search List" 1. The one REAL fact we know she was called, "Mrs. M. Thompson," in 1918, Lincoln. 2. The second fact we know is that anything is possible 3. All the facts are clear that Thompson was NOT the biological daughter of Mary Etta. 4. The fact is, somewhere, in Lincoln, is the true story of M. Thompson. Melvina Jones, b. 15 Dec 1831, OH, d. 11 Jun 1894, Logan, sister of Mary Etta, never married. The Jones sisters, were living together in 1880, with Mary Etta's second husband, Elijah Albert Morris, Sr, and HIS two youngest sons, Edward R. Morris, 18, and Solomon Morris, 17. I have 4 sons for Elijah Sr, and his first wife. Elizabeth J. Richards, NO daughters. Elizabeth J. Richards, b. 26 Apr 1826, Urbana, Champaign Co, OH, d. 22 Nov 1872, Lincoln, (Joan Lund, I do not show Menard as death place/but open to ALL corrections) d/o Elijah Richards, Jr., b. 10 May 1789, VA, d. 18 Apr 1883, Lincoln, and Sophia Haney. Anyone, have anything on Sophia Hansey, mother of Elizabeth J. Richards Morris? Mary Etta's third marriage to Abraham Baughan/Boughan, 1891, marriage record not found. He was b. 6 Oct 1832, Corwin, d. 24 Apr 1919, Lincoln, s/o Berryman and JANE Lucas. His children from first marriage, c1853, to Helen Pereta Martin, b. c1840. James A. Baughan/Boughan, b. 25 Sep 1854, Lincoln, d. 28 Nov 1930, Caton, Futon, IL Samuel G. Boughan, b. 1859, Lincoln, d. 12 Sep 1940, Lincoln No, step-daughters, only step sons. Step-granddaughter "reared as a daughter?" Anything is possible! Searching my files I found: Bertha Baughan, b. c1879, Sheridan, m. David Edward Thompson, 18 Oct 1899, Sangamon. d/o John Baugahn, and Rosa ? John is the s/o Lystra/Lester Baughan and Sarah Jane Martin. I find no children listed for Bertha and David E. Thompson. Bertha is of the age that she could have lived with her granduncle, Abraham Baughan/Boughan and his second wife, Mary Etta. Thanks again, for all the suggestions and help to everyone submitting. Please, keep the suggestions coming as they are helpful. GREAT INPUT! Those that have any ideas, please submit. Any idea, suggestion, welcomed. Our Logan ancestors must be pleased to see all the friendly help on this list. This Logan list, is great. 3. After I wrote check grandchildren I realized that I, of course, meant stepgrandchildren. Also nieces and nephews. In those days the families seem to get all jumbled up. I have nieces from Ohio living here with an aunt or uncle, marrying locally. I'm not tracing this line. I'm only casually curious about the Baughans, being a descendant of Berryman Baughan Wood. I believe Kathleen got the information she has on Mrs. M. Thompson from Mrs. Boughan's obit. It says Mrs. M Thompson is "a daughter whom she reared." To me that sounds like a stepdaughter but I suppose it could also mean "reared as a daughter." In any event, M. Thompson isn't a lot to go on. She could be, probably is, a widow herself. 3. Dear Kathleen Mae: With respect to the 1900 and 1910 census records, the firs showing Mary Etta as the mother of 4 children, none living, and the latter indicating none born, noon living: In the instructions to enumerators in both years, they were told NOT to count stillbirths when listing the number of children born. Quite often, however, the enumerator would simple ask "how many children have you had" and write down the number without mentioning that stillbirths were not to be counted. Thus, I would suggest that Mary Etta had four children born dead and only those four. Richard

    2. Richard Pence
    3. In addition to the PENCEs mentioned below by Cheryl, there were two other Pence family members who settled in Logan County. These were: DAVID PENCE, son of Samuel Pence (brother of Henry Jr. mentioned by Cheryl below, meaning he was a first cousin to Joseph Pence) was born in 1811 in Champaign County, Ohio; died 27 Aug 1899 in Jackson County, Oregon, buried in Logtown Cemetery, Jackson County; married Nancy McAllister 23 Jun 1830 in Champaign County (she was born in 1806 in Ohio, the daughter of Ezekiel McAllister); they moved to Logan County, Illinois, about 1835 and appear in the 1840 through 1870 censuses there; they went to Jackson County, probably in 1876 and according to the obituary of one of those who went to Oregon, the journey was made by "immigrant train" to northern California, then by wagon to Oregon. Also moving to Logan County was David's brother John Pence, who was born 3 Feb 1814 in Champaign County, Ohio; died 17 Apr 1879 in Logan County, Illinois, buried Reed Cemetery, Lincoln, Logan County; married Susannah Lantis about 1838 (she was born in 1815, died in 1850, the daughter of Daniel and Fanny Lantis); to Logan County about 1835; there in 1850 and 1870 censuses (called Jonathan in 1870; not found in Logan County in 1860), called Johnathan in 1870. The John Pence who married Mary Etta Jones was another John Pence, a son of David Pence and Nancy McAlister (above). John was born in 1839 in Logan County, Illinois; died 24 Dec 1872, age 33 years, 1 month and 4 days, buried in the Reed Cemetery, Logan County; married Mary Etta Jones 26 May 1859 In Logan County (she was born 15 Sep 1841 in Ohio, died 28 Jan 1919 in Lincoln, Logan County, remarried to Elijah Morris 5 Jun 1873 in Logan County, then to Abraham Boughan); they were living in Logan County in 1860 and 1870 with no children (two Morris sons from Elijah's previous marriage were listed). The wording in Mary Etta's obituary makes it sound as if Mr. Thomson was a stepdaughter or foster daughter, perhaps from her second or third marriages. (I have not found her in the 1900 census as yet.) I am currently trying to document my belief that this John served in the Union Army during the Civil War and his early death may have come as a result of wounds or illness from his service a few years earlier. As noted, John and Mary Etta had no children in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. In 1880 she was married to Morris and they also had no children. There were also other Pences who settled in Logan however briefly - these the daughters of another Joseph Pence and their husbands (surnames Fleming and Newell; they apparently returned to Champaign County). This Joseph was a brother to Henry (Jr.) and Samuel; his will in Champaign County mentions his land in Logan County, but it doesn't appear he ever lived there. In the Pence Bibles Cheryl mentioned, there was a piece of paper listing the children of Joseph Lucas (who had two children who married Pences). If I can help anyone with the Pence families who lived in Logan County, please don't hesitate to email me. And I always welcome input from others. Richard A. Pence 3211 Adams Ct. 2. Hi Cheryl, Thanks for the correction on Jane Lucas. My file had her as Sarah "Jane" Lucas. I only picked up Sarah, I will update my file, to show Jane first. And, YES, I see in my file her sister, Sarah E. Lucas, married William Copeland. At 10:07 AM 4/2/2005 -0600, you wrote: >Berryman Baughan of Virginia married JANE Lucas, not Sarah. >I have Mary Etta as Morris so I will update my notes. I was wondering if you and/or any list members would know anything about the Daughter of Mary Etta? Date of birth, marriage date, etc. Her name in 1918, is Mrs. M. Thompson, of Lincoln. This according to the Obit of Mary Etta Boughan. Does anyone know about her? Her first name? Maiden name? Thanks in advance for your help. And, Many thanks, CHERL for sharing the info you sent. Kathleen Mae

    3. Berryman Baughan of Virginia married JANE Lucas, not Sarah. Sarah married William Copeland. He had 17 children with three wives. I followed Berryman Baughan a bit because his best friend Solomon Wood was my ancestor. Solomon named one son Berryman Baughan Wood and Berryman named a son Solomon Wood Baughan. I descend from Berryman B. Wood. I have Mary Etta as Morris so I will update my notes. Here's some information from my notes on Pence which I received from Richard A. Pence who has a Pence Family History Website at: http://www.pipeline.com/~richardpence/ A number of members of the family of JOHANN HEINRICH BENTZ (Henry Pence) migrated from Champaign County, Ohio, to Logan County, most in the 1830s; all apparently lived in Logan Twp. Joseph Pence, son of Henry Pence, Jr., born 1797, married Sarah Rector in Ohio, to Logan about 1835, died in Logan Co in 1871, buried in Reed Cemetery. Joseph's son, Conway Pence, died in Logan Co in 1863, also buried in Reed Cemetery; married, first, Catherine LUCAS (below), second Sarah Elizabeth Snapp in Champaign Co OH; she married William Campbell after his death and had children by both husbands. The family Bibles of these Joseph and Conway ended up in the hands of relatives in York County, NE, and have been donated to the York Historical Society, which has kindly provided me with transcribed copies of them and they can be found at this page on my web site: www.pipeline.com/~richardpence/bibles.htm The material given the York society also included some other notes regarding Lincoln Co families, in particular, LUCAS. Conway Pence's first wife was Catherine Lucas and his sister Elizabeth married Catherine's brother George M. P. Lucas. ******** If I recall correctly, all the Lucases who married Pence are descended from Abraham and Marcy Kelsey Lucas' eldest son Joseph who married Sarah Price. I think they all lived over by Rocky Ford and are buried at Lucas Chapel. George M. P. Lucas has a rather imposing stone [compared to others in the same cemetery]. 3. And is two volumes, one of history and one of biographies. On the main page of the web site there is a link for the late Penny Husler's Logan County printed resources. It tells you where she found all of them. A guide to the abbreviations is found at the bottom of the document. And, in addition, I am sure the Logan County G&H has a copy.
