Bill, since you are in possession of the film for 1867,and since the indexing is not yet complete, could you check for these three names? Jane S Allen, nee Lyon died 5/13/1867 (wife of William) Mary C Allen, nee Wade, died 11/12/1867 (wife of Edwin R) Hammon(d), Mary, nee Beck, died sometime in 1867. Is she showing up on the index yet? She was the first wife of Jacob Hammon. Barbara, I also have the death of Jacob Hammon on 11/30/1875. I do have his will, but no obit has yet been found, and we can't locate where he was buried. An obit would really help break some ground. Could you try for this one? Of course I'm willing to pay whatever the rate is, please tell me if you can accept paypal so I can get it to you quickly. You are wonderful! I'm doing this for an elderly aunt; I had hoped to give it to her for Christmas, but I really got bogged down. She turned 91 in January, bless her. I've got so much info, though, and I plan to transcribe it for logan genweb AND will turn over everything to LCGHS. I would love for this family history to be safe for future generations. Author: wdonath Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.logan/1561.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been doing research for the Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society in Lincoln, Illinois for several years. One of my main projects has been indexing the Lincon Herald. The earliest issues of the Herald are from April 1859. Some issues are missing up to June 1863, then there is a large portion missing from June 1863 to January 1866. The issues from 1867 seem to be faily complete. I have October through December of 1867 left to index before moving on to the next roll. The index is an every name index. That is, every Logan County name listed in the paper is included with reference to issue date, page number, column number and a brief descripton of the article in which the name was mentioned. Ten's of thousands of names are mentioned in articles ranging from participation in the Atlanta Fair to court cases. The completed portion, through 1866, of the index is available at Logan Conty Genealogical and Historical Society, Lincoln, IL. 114 N. Chicago St. Lincoln or call 217-732-3200. We purchased a copy of that roll of film as well for researchers like yourself. My original intention was to read the papers for information about my own ancestors but decided to pursue indexing all names to help researchers living a distance from Logan County and who had limited time resources to do this kind of reseach. A spin-off of this research has been a book I just published in January 2007, titled "Logan County, Illinois During the Civil War - The Early Years - As Printed in the Lincoln Herald. This book is a collection of of about 770 articles that gives the researcher a "flavor" of how the war was affecting life in Logan County. Included in the book is a collection of about 70-80 letters written by Civil War soldiers from Logan County to the Herald telling of their travels, training and active war experiences. The book is available also at LCG&HS for $25. Bill Donath, VP LCG&HS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. A wiki is best explained by wikipedia, a wiki you probably use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki Originally they were open collaboration. However, in this world that doesn't work. There are always people who take glee in adding bad things, wrong things, obscene things. To prevent that you need a password to add to most wikis. One of the things this does is allow people who have no clue about web code to contribute information to a web page. There have been suggestions to do wiki web pages on the county sites but, frankly, you can't even put up a guest book without some jerk coming along and adding an obscene comment or a porno link so I don't think it will happen. There is a genealogy wiki at: http://werelate.org/wiki/Main_Page. I started a personal wiki there at: http://www.werelate.org/wiki/User:Cheryl The Logan County info on We Relate is at http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Place:Logan_County%2C_Illinois As you can tell I don't have a lot of time for this. You don't need a password for we relate but they have a staff who monitor all changes. You can get your own wiki space there. One last comment. A wiki would be useful if you have multiple people working on the same family involved in one, all adding genealogy. Cheryl Rothwell Cheryl Rothwell

It can be time consuming and sometimes impossible to locate an obit in these very old papers, but sometimes you get lucky...just have to have time to go look and have enough info, a solid date, makes the hunt fairly simple, it's either there or not. With only limited details...such as the year 1865, that can take a lot of time and you probably will come up empty handed. 1867 is VERY OLD there are only a few micro-films of papers that old...and they are a hodge-podge of missing issues, hard to read or just not available (If memory serves me 1865 is the very earliest paper, but don't hold me to that, that's from memory, Cheryl has them listed I belive somewhere on the Logan county page.) ALSO the farther back you go they mostly talked about general World issues like the war and such...the "gossip" hometown news can be hard to find in the very old papers. So it may be impossible, but unless you look you'll never know,if you have just a "couple" obits, I could try for you...just reply with the ones you are hunting for and I'll see if I can find them for you. I'll check back in next day or two. Barb Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I started a wiki for Logan County at http://logancountygenealogy.pbwiki.com/ Right now it just has basic information. Cheryl Rothwell
In addition to the obvious connection, I am descended from his sister Esther Scroggin too. Can you ID the people in the photos? There were two views of the main table plus a picture of the granddaughters and a picture of the grandsons. I believe there were pictures of the children also, with and without spouses. I have a good copy of the grandsons, bad copy of the table and the granddaughters. Do you have good pictures you could scan? We know WHO is in the pictures but not which one is which. As lurkers who are not related note from her list, the Scroggin line was fairly prolific and married into many local families. Cheryl Rothwell
Thanks for the email. I am a Scroggin, well way down the ladder.I have pictures of Humphrey on his 90th birthday and my Grandmother is at the table of the birthday party. Cheryl: I found my g.g.grandfather listed in the 1862 military census - do you think there would be any kind of paper work on him and if so, where and how do I go about obtaining it?? It was not a full blown census. It was a military census. They only asked what the federal government told them to ask. They only covered the people they were instructed to cover. Exemptions are explained in the introduction. You can also use the 1855 state census which is also on the web site and the 1860 federal census which is not. The Logan County G&H has an index to that and other censuses on a CD for purchase at a very reasonable price. There was an 1865 state census but it is not available for Logan County. My Humphrey Scroggin ancestor who reached the age of 90 died in 1821 so I don't think it is the same guy. His son, the RW vet who came to Logan County, died at 82. I'm thinking your Humphrey is a later descendant of these Humphreys in a line I haven't followed. Bill would know. Are you sure she is at Steenbergen? The Gasaways [spelled multiple ways] tend to be at Lake Bank. There is a Cora, Francis, Burton and Junior Wilson [apparently one family] at Lake Bank. If the other names are correct, Cora is probably Lora. Some of the stones are difficult to read. I believe the missing stones at Steenbergen are from the earliest burials. Cheryl Rothwell
IF he served from Illinois you can get his record [free] from the state archives. Be advised it is merely a page listing the names of the people in that unit but it contains a physical description. We had photographs but this had hair and eye color, height, complexion, marital status, occupation, place of birth, when joined and some other info, not particularly readable. You will also get the information on the people near him in the unit alphabetically which, in my case, provided me with both gggrandfathers who served in the 106th. Go here: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/datcivil.html and click on how to obtain copies... The other military records are at the national archives and they are quite expensive.
