It's sounding like Abe Lincoln filmed them and others purchased the same films. I just wanted it clarified. I know it was a long shot, but in the absence of death certs, wills/probate, and even tombstones, I had to try for something concrete. Barb DID find something on Jacob that a paid researcher had missed; these can be very hard to find, I know. In those days there was no set place in a paper to report the deaths. They were mixed in with other articles. Thanks you for your assistance. I really appreciate it. Cheryl Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [ILLOGAN] Pancrantus
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. I received a photo of Simon Pancrantus (spelling?) dated approximately 1900-1910. The Pancrantus family is believed to be related to the mother of the late Illinois Senator Everett Dirksen, possibly through the Conrady family but it might be through the Janssen family. A tie to Logan County is suspected, thus the picture. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? Cheryl Rothwell

Author: momkale Surnames: HAMMON, ALLEN Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.logan/1568.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Barb, Please don't feel sad that you didn't find Jacob's cemetery.I'm pleasantly surprised that you found anything at all. Those "tidbits" made him seem more real; I was beginning to think he was a mirage! It is just so unfortunate that he died only two years before death certs were required! I forgot to thank you for the Preston/Hammon marriage; that poor lady was married three times, burying all those husbands. I have the marriage records for two of them, but didn't think to look for news articles. I guess I'm getting too close to the situation and have to back off and take a deep breath. I emailed Lincoln Library/ (Lincoln, IL) asking how those were filmed; I'll share the answer if/when it's received. I think we can all benefit from knowing the answer. I know my library does there own filming; if a patron chose to cut something out that day, there'd definitely be a hole. If another area library also filmed that same paper, an option is then available. It can't hurt to nail it down. I'm still curious to see if the 1867 deaths for Mary Allen, Mary Hammon and Jane Allen show up on the index LCGHS has; maybe I confused the issue asking you and Bill to do things in the same posting. I'll contact them tomorrow or Wednesday, as there are things I need to order, anyway. Again, thanks for all you have done. You've gone above and beyond what even a genangel does. Browsing thru all those films took a lot of time; I know because I've done it for others, too. Thanks, Barb. Cheryl Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. Re: [ILLOGAN] James/Jarvis BURROUGHS, b. 1837
    2. -------------- Original message from Bfamilyseekr@wmconnect.com: -------------- > Hi, > Saw your letter about the Scroggin family and sorry to change the subject, > but do you have any information on James Jarvis Burroughs listed in the 1900 > Census: > 1900 Census, East Lincoln, Logan Co. IL > Burrows, James March 1837 b. Ohio > Mary H. July 1849 b. IL > Addie M. Sept 1867 b. IL > Did James and his family stay in Logan County? What happened to them after > 1900? > Thanks for any help you can give me. > Lois Branch Lois -- Are you sure you're barking up the right tree? I know that you are searching for the descendants of your husband's 3ggf, Edward BURROUGHS. However, I do not think that the James BURROWS who appeared on the 1900 Logan Co., Illinois census was the same person as James or Jarvis BURROUGHS, the third child of Edward BURROUGHS of Wayne Co., Illinois. Consider the following trail of evidence: 1840 Census -- Edward BURROUGHS, age 20-29, was enumerated in Chester twp, Meigs Co., Ohio. Among those included in his household were one male age 5-9 and one male under age 5. We can conclude from the 1850 census that these boys were his two eldest sons, Hayes and James. 1850 Census (taken 29 Oct) -- James BURROUGHS, age 13, b. OH, was enumerated in Chester twp, Meigs Co., Ohio, in the household of Edward BURROUGHS. No child named Jarvis was listed with the family. 1853 -- Edward BURROUGHS and his family removed to Wayne County, Illinois (per the obituary of his daughter Harriet). 1860 Census (taken 8 Aug) -- Jarvis BURRIS, age 23, farmer, b. OH, was enumerated in twp 1S, range 7E [Lamard twp], Wayne Co., Illinois. Also listed in his household were Catharine, age 26, b. OH; Harriet M., age 2, b. IL; Hattie, age 14, b. OH; and William, age 10, b. OH. Catharine was evidently his wife, and Harriet M. his daughter. Hattie was his sister Mehetable (my 2nd great grandmother), and William was his brother. The adjacent household was that of Jarvis's stepmother, Cynthia BURRIS, age 32, farmeress, b. PA. Her household included her daughter Mary, age 1, b. IL; and her five sons from her first marriage to John WALLER. As you and I have previously discussed, Edward BURROUGHS was probably in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana at this time, visiting his terminally ill mother (she died 9 Sep 1860). Unfortunately, the census for Tippecanoe County had been taken prior to Edward's arrival there, so he apparently missed being enumerated in 1860 altogether! Edward BURROUGHS ! did app ear on the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Wayne County. 1870 Census (taken 4 Aug) -- Jarvus BURROWS, age 33, farmer, b. OH, was enumerated in Romine twp, Marion Co., Illinois. Also listed in his household were Catharine, age 37, b. OH; Harriet, age 13, b. OH [actually IL]; Sarah, age 12, b. IL; Manurvey [Minerva], age 9, b. IL; Hattie, age 4, b. IL; and John, age 2, b. IL. Romine twp is in the southeastern corner of Marion County, bordering Wayne County. I have not located Sarah on the 1860 census. 1880 Census (taken 8 Jun) -- Jarvis BURROUGHS, age 43, farmer, b. OH, father b. NJ [actually OH], mother b. OH [actually NH] was enumerated in Romine twp, Marion Co., Illinois. Also listed in his household were wife Arminda, age 30, b. IL, father & mother b. KY; son William, age 16, b. IL; dau Hettie, age 13, b. IL; son John, age 11, b. IL; son Peter, age 10, b. IL; dau Emma, age 9, b. IL; son George, age 5, b. IL; and son Franklin, age 3, b. IL. The adjacent household was that of Jarvis's brother, William BURROUGHS. Arminda was evidently Jarvis's second wife; I have seen her maiden name given as FORTH, but I have not verified that. I have not located Jarvis's son William on the 1870 census, and I have not determined which of the younger children (if any) were born to Arminda. The census gives IL as the birthplace for the mother of all seven children, but this is obviously an error, since Jarvis's first wife was born in Ohio. 1887 -- Jarvis BURROUGHS md. Mary M. McCLAIN 14 Nov in Clay Co., Illinois (per the online Illinois Statewide Marriage Index). Clay County borders Wayne County on the north and Marion County on the east. Based upon the 1900 census (which showed Mary as the mother of two children), it is likely that McCLAIN was the surname of a previous husband. 1900 Census (taken 29 Jun) -- Jarvis BUROUGHS, age 63, farmer, b. Mar 1837 in OH, md. 30 yrs, father b. OH, mother b. OH [actually NH] was enumerated in Romine twp, Marion Co., Illinois. Also listed in his household were wife Mary M., age 67, b. Jan 1849 in IL, md. 30 yrs, mother of 2 ch., 2 living, father b. TN, mother b. KY; son Milton, age 15, b. May 1885 in IL; son Luther, age 13, b. Jan 1887 in IL; and gson William G., age 10, b. Apr 1890 in IL. I have not discovered the identity of William's parents. There are clearly some errors in this census listing; Mary's age as recorded is inconsistent with her birthdate, and Jarvis and Mary had obviously not been married for 30 years. Conclusions: 1) The James BURROUGHS listed as the son of Edward BURROUGHS in the 1850 Meigs Co., Ohio census was probably the same person as the Jarvis BURROUGHS listed in Wayne Co. and Marion Co., Illinois in the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses. 2) Despite the fact that he was born in Ohio in Mar 1837 and had a wife named Mary, the James BURROWS listed in the 1900 Logan Co., Illinois census was probably not the same person as James or Jarvis BURROUGHS, the son of Edward BURROUGHS of Wayne County, Illinois. 1. [ILLOGAN] Death of W.F. Coffee by train: Dec. 21, 1911
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: seggelke Surnames: Coffee,Berkley Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.logan/1569/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lincoln Courier, Dec 21,1911: FLAGMAN KILLED BY ALTON TRAIN (William F. Coffee struck by Praireie State Express and Died of Injuries) Struck by the southbound Prairie State while attemping to flag a switch engine at the Tremont street crossing. William F. Coffee, flagman stationed at the street crossing received injuries of which he died forty-five minutes later at the Deaconess hospital. Coffee never regained consciousness and died while in the elevator that was bearing him to the operating table at the hospital. Coffee, who is said to have been somewhat hard of hearing, was flagging a switch engine running north about 2:30pm. The Prairie State was late and had just began to slow down for the station two blocks away, when it was seen that Coffee was unaware of his danger. The brakeman of the switch engine shouted to him, but it was too late. Coffee was standing directly on the street crossing, and the engine evidently struck him in the back of the head. His body was hurled through the air and his head struck against the concrete curbing of the street. An employe at the nearby bottling works stat! ed that he heard both engines whistle and looking out saw that the Prairie State had thrown on the brakes. The crew of the switch engine could not reach the body until the train had passed and it was found that life was almost extinct. Considerable delay was incurred before an ambulance was summoned. The train crew wanted to run down to the depot and call a doctor and take the man's name and neighbors finally had to summon Dr. Ewing, the company's physician. The ambulance of Ryan & Purintion was then delayed at the crossing by the switch engine that persisted in blocking the tracks even with help in sight. The Prairie state was in charge of Conductor Sutton. Coffee lived only a block away on Logan Street with his widowed daughter, Mrs. Berkley, who soon reached the scene. He also leaves three sons, Abe Coffee, Section foreman at Broadwell, and Jim Coffee who was formerly section foreman at Atlanta. Another son , Oscar Coffee lives at home. Coffee had been working at the flag station for three years. His wife died three years ago. He has worked as a flagman for many years in different parts of the country.## >From Lincoln Courier Dec. 22, 1911-Friday HOLD INQUEST: (Coroner's Jury Inquires into the Death of W.F. Coffee and Adjourns.) Friday afternoon at the Boyden Undertaking rooms an inquest was held to inquire into the death of William F. Coffee, the aged flagman who was killed Thursday afternoon by the Prairie State express at the Alton crossing at Tremont street. The jury was composed of the following men: Fred Berger, Henry Brown, J.R. Jones, Wm.E. Town, J.T. Rudolph, George J. Brockett. the jury met at 2 o'clock and heard all the testimony that was available. They adjourned until a later date when the railroad trainmen can appear and give their testimony. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed owing to the absence of one son , Abe Coffee, who has been visiting in Kentucky. He is expected home at any time. William F. Coffee was aged 62 years, 1 month and 26 days at the time of the deplorable accident. He was born in Kentucky and has lived in this state for the past seven years. He has been working in the employ of various railroads for many years. Persons at the passenger station who wre waiting for the Prairie State and who saw the accident, state that he had stepped onto the middle of the track just before the engine struck him. His body was thrown high in the air and fell within the shadow of this little flag shanty. A deep cut of about four inches in lenght, that had penetrated his skull, substantiated the first theory that his head struck some other sharp object causing death. This was presumably the corner of the street curbing. Funeral Announcements will follow.## I'm not a ancestor or researcher of this line, but I was doing this lookup and I found it very intersting to read. Thought I'd share it with everyone. 1. [ILLOGAN] Obit for Jacob Hammond
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: seggelke Surnames: Hammon(d), Allen, Daniels,Shinn, Preston Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.logan/1568/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Cheryl: Here is what I could find: There was no "big" obit..so I just kept looking around the time of the date you gave me, 11/30/1875, and in December under the CHESTNUT News I stumbled onto this: CHESTNUT Dec. 13- Uncle Jacob Hammond has passed away, his sufferings o'er on this earth, may his future be as a flower. "Dalton teaches such." I'm pretty sure this is your Jacob Hammon. I looked through lots of issues and this was all there was except for the notice of his Probate: Lincoln Herald Dec 23, 1875 (roll #237B..for both) County Court: The probate business of the December term has, thus far, been as follows: The will of Jacob Hammon was brought up for proof, but one of the witnesses being sick and unable to attend, Wm.H. Daniels was authorized to take her evidence and the cause was continued. I also looked for obits on Jane Allen 5/13/1867 Mary Allen 11/12/1867..Mary Harmmon 1867... And I couldn't find any mention. The issue that Mary Allen's obit would have likely been in ..someone had cut out a big hunk of newspaper below where the weddings were.. so I figure they cut out the deaths. ...I looked all around the dates for a hidden tibit, but wasn't lucky on them. At the library the oldest date on a Newspaper was april 1859. (And that is just issues here and there..lots missing). While searching I found this little note for you: Lincoln Herald June 8, 1859... MARRIED: At the house of the bride's father, Logan, County, IL , June 5th, by Rev. S. Shinn, Mr. Enoch Preston and Miss Sarah J. Hammon. That's all I found. Hope it helps. BY THE WAY: One reason I do look-ups now and then is because I stumble onto my own missing pieces, while looking for your info today I found a divorce degree and a obit of 2 of my ancestors that I've been hunting for, but had no firm date to know where to start...SO it pays off everyone to help out each other!
