Is there any one with information on the Hemken family from Livingston County? Leone Hemken was owner of land in Pike twp. in 1976 according to a plat book published by "Rockford Map Publishers", Inc. for the Bicentenial. My grandfathers brother, (John Heibult) lived and owned land in Nebraska twp.,Livingston Co. My ggrandfather Klass Heibult in Wustenei Ostfriesland,Germ. had two brothers that married Hemken sisters, Meena Gerdes Hemken, and Frauke Gerdes Hemken. We have an "Ostfriesland Genealogical Soc" at George. Ia, and a member from Witchita, KS by the name of Raymond Hemken is interested in the Hemken family history, too. fh
For Karen and others: Regarding how to obtain marriage records from Livingston Co., IL, write a letter asking for the marriage license, using the information you obtained from the on-line marriage index including the parties' names, marriage date, license number and anything else you can provide. I strongly suggest you ask also for the marriage license application. When you get into the 1880 period, you get applications which provide the parents' names for bride and groom, including both mothers' maiden names, birthplaces, etc. I just did this in February, and unfortunately the person responding said "There is no application with this marriage record." Such wording is very confusing. Does she mean no application is filed WITH the marriage record or license in the same book or file drawer? Or does she mean there is no application filed elsewhere - and I have seen them in the past down in the basement. I wrote a second letter and got the following comment: "As I stated before! There IS NO APPLICATION with this marriage record." I sent $10 with each of my letters and they returned the second $10. The address is: County Clerk's Office, Livingston Co. Courthouse, 112 W. Madison St., Pontiac, IL 61764-1871 U.S.A. I hope you have better luck than I did. I may try to get up there this summer, about 130 miles from home. Linda Kmiecik Girard, IL
Thanks Linda, and all the other helpful people from whom I got private replies. I was told that you can get genealogical copies of the certificates for $3 to $5 but I am not sure what information I will get from them. Maybe the marriage licence application is a good idea as well. You would think there would be an application with every marriage certificate. Can anyone tell me what information is included on the marriage certificate? Hi listers- I have been trying to find the family of James and Jane (Bentley) Close and have found indications of them going to Livingston Co. from Canada (they were both born in England). Tonight I have found on the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index , three names of some CLOSE girls who were all married the same day (August 24, 1881) in Livingston County. These girls also have the same christian names as James and Jane's children. I found: Sarah J. who married a George WEATHERHEAD, Wilhelmina who married John W. PARKER and Hannah L. who married Peter J. GERHART. Also there was a James Jr. who married Emma A. COSSELMAN on Dec 22, 1875 in Livinston Co. These children are also of about the right age to be marrying at that time. What I would like to know is how to get the marriage information on them to determine if they are in fact children of James and Jane CLOSE. The website gives the names of the counties from which information is available for ordering but Livingston is not one of them. Any help would be truly appreciated. - Karen in BC Canada

If anyone has an 1860 Livingston County IL Census would you please check to see if there are any families listed with the surname COSAD? I appreciate any help! Sue
Livingston Co., IL marriages 1837-1877 are now on-line, and apparently additional marriages are being typed in. Access this information through the Secretary of State's site: http://www.sos.state.il.us/. Then select "Services", and then "Governmental Records", and then "Search Archives Databases". Scroll down a bit to find the Marriage database name, and go from there. Linda Kmiecik
Regarding marriage records in Livingston County, I was there last year looking for my Metz and King ancestors and my notes indicate records at least back to 1867 (I only took notes on certain families that I was interested in, so it is quite likely that they go back further - my somewhat hazy memory seems to recall that they had records back into the 1840s, but the record got thinner the further you went back). If you go there, they'll let you look at the books yourself. I recall seeing the actual certificates (or good facsimiles). Perhaps worth a trip if you're not too far away. For Diane R. and others: I found the following old e-mail in which I sent someone else the questions asked on an application for a marriage license in 1880: Full name of groom, place of residence, occupation, age next birthday in years, color, race (Irish American), place of birth, father's name, mother's maiden name, number of groom's marriage, full name of bride, maiden name, if a widow, place of residence, age next birthday in years, color, race, place of birth, father's name, mother's maiden name, no. of bride's marriage, married at ____________, date, witnesses' signatures (Edward Brown and Kate Waters), and then a certification at the bottom to be signed by the priest, giving marriage date and place. All wonderful information. Actually at the top is "Illinois State Board of Health. Return of a Marriage to County Clerk." The instructions at the top say it should be filled in carefully and attached to and returned with the Marriage License. "This Return does not take the place of the Certificate which comes attached to the License, but is IN ADDITION THERETO."
With reference to Linda Kmiecik's message on today's list, by coincidence I had just requested a copy of a marriage license issued in 1882 in Livingston County, IL. I also requested that if an application for this license was on file, to also send a copy of it. I have found that it is worthwhile to ask for both of these documents if available. This is my first request in Illinois, but I have found in Nebraska for instance that the marriage certificate on file in the 1880's in one county I am researching gave the names of both sets of parents and included the maiden names of both mothers. On an 1883 certificate I requested in Alabama there was a copy of a note handwritten by the bride's father giving his permission for the wedding. This was my first clue to her father's given name and also indicated that she was quite young, giving me an idea of the date of her birth. Just tho't I'd pass this on as every little clue helps. For Diane: I have a copy of the 1876 marriage license of my great-grandfather's brother. It gives his name, residence, and age, as well as his bride's name, residence and age. At the bottom of the form is the "return", a short section in which the priest (or minister, justice of the peace, etc.) certified that on the 30th day of November 1876 he did join in marriage these two people. However, even more important is their "Application for Marriage License" which I also have. In this case, it gives no additional information - just name, residence, and age, plus swearing that each is single and unmarried. However, I have seen other Applications for Marriage License, in which such wonderful information appears as the groom's and bride's mothers' maiden names. One of these was an 1880 Livingston Co., IL Application, and another was in the 1880s or 1890s in a different county in Illinois. I would think for an 1885 marriage, you would also get this additional information. The Applications are indeed on file in Livingston Co., IL, and I believe they are down in the courthouse basement. I was allowed down there one time, by myself, and nearly went crazy looking in ledgers, drawers of metal file cabinets, etc. I'm sure the girl who told me to go on downstairs got in lots of trouble when I came back upstairs and met the older woman who was in charge. A letter to the County Clerk, Livingston County Courthouse, Pontiac, Illinois (I do not know the zip code), enclosing perhaps $10.00 U.S. and requesting these copies should bring a response, if not the copies, then at least a statement of what their cost would be. Linda K.

I am new on the list and was wondering if anyone is connected to the above family. This family originally came from Ontario, Canada, about 1864. Jane and James were married in Ontario in 1844. Most of the children were born in Ontario except for two. James and Jane were born in Yorkshire, England. There is information on this family on the family search site under the IGI but they are listed as being married in Broughton, Livington, Illinois, and all their children born there. Also Jane is listed as being born in Ilinois. This is not correct. The information has been submitted under a batch number beginning with F which is a patron submitted form. If anyone is researching this family and has information on their descendents, I would like to hear from them and exchange information. - Karen in BC Canada

Good Evening, Are there any churches in the area of Streator? Among other cities, this would include: Dwight, Cornell, Wenona, Grand Ridge? The Streator Times Press published a short history of the churches in their readership area in the 1950's. We have copies of the articles at the museum and I could make a copy for you.
