Is anyone possibly researching the Terry surname in Livingston Co? I am trying to tie in the Terry that married a Begley/Bagley woman in New York - their son was living with his grandfather John Begley in the 1880 census of Sunbury Twp. Thank you Margaret
This is a site for people to do City Directory lookups. I just joined so I'm not sure if it will help but it's a possible way to get info when you can't get to the city yourself. CITY-DIRECTORIES-L-request@rootsweb.com Hope it helps someone. Peg
Greetings, I will be going to Fairbury for thanksgiving and was planning to go over to the Germanville Cemetary to photograph a stone there. I would be happy to try to search and photograph Mary Leihe(Lee) headstone if it is still intact and readable. The cemetary is right across the road from Turtle Pond N.E. of Strawn and SW of Chatsworth. I used to hunt pheasant in the fields and hedgerows around the cemetary and hunt arrowheads around Turtle Pond. Linda, Thanks for all the good information. I'll contact the IL State Library. You confirm what I have suspected, that being, I believe the exact name of the paper may have been lost in translation over the years. My information says the paper was not a success and died out shortly after it was started, so I don't believe there are a lot of surviving issues out there of the limited amount ever published. The paper in question could very well be one of those you mentioned. You wouldn't happen to know the final disposition of Eaton Goodell Osman would you? He was the son of William Osman, editor of the Ottawa Free Trader. He published a number of trade magazines, maybe in the Chicago area. Hello, I am interested in finding the burial location of my gggreat aunt. Her name was Mary Leihe or Lee and she died in 1896. She was living with her family in Germanville Twp near Strawn. Thank you. S E Allen
Hi Illinois, I am seeking information on Moses Osman who reportedly started a newspaper (Fairbury News) in Fairbury, IL circa late 1800s. Would like to learn if any of the copies of the paper survived or were microfilmed. Moses and his brother William ran a newspaper in Ottawa, IL for many years, the Ottawa Free Trader. The brothers moved to IL in the 1840s from Dauphin Co., PA. Thanks, Jay M. Osman Landisburg, PA
I have not had any luck finding Livingston County, IL information on the web. It seems internet genealogy has not taken hold there. I started my family search at the Newberry Library by sending for a surname search of the IL Death Index. This is for deaths over 50 years ago. It cost $7.00. The web site is at http://www.newberry.com. This gave me birth and death dates. I then sent for the certificates. This in turn gave me addresses where they lived, relatives and addresses of those present at the time the death certificate was filled out and cemetary locations. Since my relatives were buried at the Chatsworth Cemetary I wrote to Verda Gerwick. Her address is: Lexington Genealogy and Historical Society, Inc. 318 W. Main St. Lexington, IL 61753 The secret to getting Verda's assistance is to send a SASE, ask for specific info, be grateful and send her a check. For a cemetary listing of a surname I sent $10.00. This got me a burial location, more dates, relatives buried next to them and some- times an obit. She does not have obits that ran only in the Chatsworth newspapers. I have been unable to find cemetary listings for this area anywhere else. I also have found that if you email the Newberry about where to find info on a particular group (nurses or miners) they can point you in the right direction. You will need a specific location and time period. IRAD has numerous listings on coal mining. I don't know if they are in Livingston or not. Diane Poway, CA

Joan: I will take you up on your offer. I am having such a time trying to locate any information on my great grandparents. I did finally discover they were married 11 Oct 1863 and have sent for the marriage certificate from Livingston County. No reply yet. My great grandfather was Albert O. Harvey (sometimes listed as A. O. Harvey) and my great grandmother was Margaret F. (I think it is Frances) Turner. Albert had been living in Chicago in 1860 so how he got to Livingston County I don't know. I don't know the name of Margaret's parent either and can't find anyplace where I can look at the census -- at least no place on line. I am not a member of Ancestry.com so can't look in their files. I know that Albert and Margaret (Turner) Harvey lived in Beadle County, South Dakota, from 1880 to 1888 then I have no idea what happened to them -- no death dates, no city where they might have moved. Census records there showed Margaret was born in Ohio and I know Albert was born in England. There was a family story that Margaret moved back to Illinois, possibly the Chicago area but I have found nothing in Dupage or Cook county on her. I don't know where Albert went or if he died shortly after going back to Illinois. As you can see any little bit of information I can find or even leads that I could follow up on would be appreciate. Even if I had the names of some turners in Livingston County in 1863 would be appreciated. Thank you for this wonderful information!!!! I truly appreciate it Dianne. I do think I'll contact Verda. And in the small world category - I went to the Streator Library this morning to look up some old obit's and who do I meet but Joan Johnson of our list. She too had mining relatives and was able to enlighten me some on the days of old. I found my long lost Jacob Carmean of Livingston who died way down in St. Clair County. Seems the poor old chap was still mining and met his death by walking in front of a moving train. I'm most anxious to understand more about the mining industry in Livingston so when I learn enough I'll post it to the list for future researchers! Thanks!!!!! http://www.crtelco.com/~annette1/ The above address is the web address for the ILGenWeb site for Livingston County Genealogy. It has been on the internet since 1997. We might not have all the information you are looking for, however, we are alive and active out here in the Livingston County prairie. This list you are all posting to is a product of the GenWeb. It is nice that other people are becoming active in posting Livingston County information for all of us to search through. One word of warning however, the material contributed to the US and ILGen Web sites will always be for free to access. This can not be said of all sites. You can rest assured that your family tree information will not be for sale or used for profit by the volunteers who devote their time and energy to maintain these sites. I don't have a problem with the many messages I've seen posted by Dennis on this mailing list regarding his web site as long as the information remains free. If any of you are having problems accessing our web pages and lose the above address. Just type in Livingston County, IL in your search engine and I'll bet it will be within the top three to appear. My email address is annette1@crtelco.com Good luck to all of you.
