Barb, Here is the Introduction page to the cemetery records for this church. If you need a look up I'll need more info. INTRODUCTION Saint John th Baptist Catholic Church cemetery is located along Hoxsey road, one mile south of the Village of Somonauk, Illinois, in Section 5 of Northville Township, LaSalle County. This tract of land consists of 4.8 acres more or less. The earliest record of a land transfer for the purpose of establishing a church burial ground appears in the LaSalle County Courthouse records of 1854. Two parcels were deeded to the Trustees of a Catholic Religious Society on March 6th of that year. One acre donated by Louis Ulrich and one-half acre donated by Concorde Hisler Mourlam. Later acquisitions were made by the cemetery in 1896(1.06 acre), 1935(1,06 acre), and 1967(1.05 acre). There is additional information explaining about the inscriptions and how they are arranged in the book so what is above is only the first half of the introduction. If you want me to look up someone for you, let me know. From: PAST AND PRESENT OF DEKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS By Prof. Lewis M. Gross Volume 1 Chicago: The Pioneer Publishing Company 1907 Page 162/163 .......A Catholic society was organized in the later '50s by a priest from Naperville, who held services in private houses or in the hotel of the village, where the Catholics would assemble to do their daily duty, have their children baptized and receive the sacrament of the church. In 1863 they purchased a hall and in 1866 built a frame church forty by eighty. This building was destroyed by fire in 1868. this was replaced by a building of brick of the same dimensions, and at a later period an addition was built to the church. Rev. C.J. Huth was the first resident priest of Somonauk, and remained there for sixteen years. Father Huth was popular not only with the members of his congregation, but with the whole community, and when he was transferred from this appointment the Protestants had a public meeting and made him a valuable present. ............... -----Original Message----- From: BJS4179@aol.com [SMTP:BJS4179@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, May 13, 1999 8:20 AM To: ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILLASALL-L] Re: ILLASALL-D Digest V99 #72 Bonnie - I am looking for the catholic church called "St. John the Baptist" located in Somonauk.
