Biography in Black is the history of Streator from about the 1830's when Bazore, Bronson, Mackey and other families came from Ohio and Penn to farm. From the title, you would think it was a history of coal mining, but it is not. It talks about Col. Plumb, the Vermillion Coal Co.(VC) and Kangley, building the railroads, but does not mention the smaller mines, types of mining, names of miners unless they contributed in other ways to the history of Streator. The book written by Paula Angle was based on Ted Weber's radio program's from the 1960's. Heenanville mine closed about 1906. While coal was still being mined, by 1912 the glass and shale industries were growing and they are covered in the book. Coal was still mined in the 1950's; one was using the shale, and the French mine and Bavolar's were still in operation.
