Good luck, As far as I know, the "Swedish" Lutherans had to provide papers from their church in the old country before they could join a church in the US. And years ago, a catholic priest would request the information from a person's old parish before he could perform a marriage. Hope all the churches require the same paper work. My family used to talk about waiting in the cars outside the church, while the priest tried to get permission to perform a marriage. The bride was baptized in the Latin-rite, her and her parents attended the Latin-rite. But, her father was baptized in the Greek-rite in the old country. She was getting married in the Irish church and that priest never gave it a thought that there was a problem. Male Greek rite Catholics carry the "stigma" forever. Where would genealogy be with out all that paper work. Joanie
Your remark about Lutherans needing church papers explains what I found in an aunt's papers. It looked like a church paper, signed by a minister, and coincided with their emigration. All in Swedish. I'm wondering if such things are possibly archived at Augustana, in their Swedish collection. Could I find copies of other people like my grandmother's?
