I've got a history of Freedom Twp., compiled by Evenlyn Goetsch in 1976 for the bicentennial. I remember some local group had a re-enactment of the Indian Creek massacre then - as a 13 yr. old, I got to play the part of Rachel! At any rate, in the book when describing the Davis family, it states: "William Davis, a blacksmith from Kentucky with his wife and eight children was the first settler. His wife was the daughter of John Hays of Tenn., the first settler of Peru. They constructed their cabin on the north bank of the creek and a blacksmith shop a short distance away, no doubt with plans for a sizable settlement. In 1832 they were in the process of building a dam across the creek for the grist mill. Of their eight children, we know the names of only three, William, Jr., Alexander and Jimmy, their youngest." (p. 5-6). Elsewhere it states that Jimmy was about 7 yrs. old when he was killed. I'm pretty sure the monument doesn't list everyone's names, just "William Davis & family", "William Pettigrew & family", "William Hall & family" or something similar. thanks for the links on local history, I thought the one from the LaSalle Co. Historical Society was especially good!
