He was reared in his native country and there married Mary Farlow, a native of County Terhune, Ireland. Her ancestors were seceding Scotch Presbyterians who colonized the north of Ireland during one of the wars of their native country. In 1845 Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery came to America and lived several years in pennsylvania. In 1855 they came to Illinois and lived in Peoria County till 1867, when they moved to La Salle County and settled where they now live. The have had a family of ten children, but three of whom are living---William T., of Kansas; John E., of Prairie City, Iowa; and Robert, of California. Of the seven who have died three met with peculiarly distressing deaths. One son was burned to death; a daughter was killed by the kick of a pet colt, when thirteen years of age; and another daughter, Lucinda, the wife of William Church, was killed by the accidental discharge of a sky-rocket, July 4, 1885. She left a family of three children who find a home with their grandparents.
