Hello - Family oral history says that William Montgomery, my great grandfather, died at Streator, La Salle Co. in the late 1870's from pneumonia after bringing in a prisoner through a snow storm. Earlier he had served as a police officer in southern Illinois and elsewhere before moving to La Salle Co. circa 1870, with wife Matilda and children. Any suggestions for developing information re William's residence, service, and death would be much appreciated. Are there city or county directories, and/or local newspaper records of the time?
