    3. Hi- For the record, there are no Zinc Mines in La Salle. The Zinc Companies (M&H in La Salle, and Illinois Zinc in Peru) brought the ore in and smelted it in the plants there. Then they also had the Rolling Mills to make the Zinc Sheets. The companies were located in that area because there was ample coal to fire the furnaces. It was cheaper to import the zinc than to export the coal. Back in 1950 I worked in the Illinois Zinc Co. and my father in law worked at M & H. My great grandfather was killed in a mining accident at the M & H Coal mine in the late 1800's.
