Tim, How far back of a census do you think I should go? I don't know how many years are in between them, 5 or 10 year spans. Gwen, I'm not sure of the exact number of censuses, though I expect there was one every ten years after a certain point, so I would look for the 1850 or 1840 census. The 1850 census for LaSalle County is also available in text form at http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/il/lasalle/1850/. I would encourage you to hunt around in the files there. You can find all the Johnsons by going into the indx-i-k.txt file. Then you should find a cross-reference to the family listing. For example: Pg# Ln# Last Name First Name Age Birth Place Filename 324A 22 Johnson Henry 29 Norway pg0321b.txt Then you back out of the index file and go to the page number, and you click on the file with the page number. Use the Find function of your browser to find Johnson, and you'll see there's a Johnson family in Mission Township (actually a bunch of Johnsons). I believe the above Henry Johnson is the only one in the index, and of course the age doesn't match, but you might try the same exercise with Ellen Olson. Good luck!
