Would anyone on the list have access to this census image? I've been looking for my great grandmother for years and a relative just found her, under her maiden name, on the 1900 census index. She found "Anna Johnson b. 25 January 1832 Norway, age 68 yrs., alien, LaSalle County, Ottawa Township, LaSalle County Asylum inmate." I would hope that the actual census image would give the date of immigration. The census index said Vol. 109 E D 139 sheet 1 line 31. Since she was admitted under her maiden name (she was married to Lars Pearson, who preceded her in death), I am thinking that she may have been admitted by a sibling named Johnson who may have lived in the area. If the dates of immigration were the same, it could point me to her family. Also wondering if anyone knows if there are any LaSalle County Asylum records in existence. I checked the State Archives database and didn't see anything. This lady has been a mystery to me for over 30 years and any help would be greatly appreciated. Joan in Illinois
Hi Joan, That census listing is as follows: 1900 US Census Population Schedule, Illinois, LaSalle County, Ottawa Township, LaSalle County Asylum at Ottawa. Sup Dist 5, Enum Dist 139 enumerated on the 14 Jun 1900 by James W. Angevine Page 1-A, Line 31 (4th ward Partially Insane Women's Building) Johnson, Anna; Inmate; W F Jan 1832 68 M 31 8 5 Norway Norway Norway 1870 30 Un No No Yes Translates to: Anna Johnson, inmate in the 4th ward of the Partially Insane Women's Building of the LaSalle County Asylum at Ottawa, was a white female born in January of 1832 and is age 68. She was married for 31 years and had 8 children, 5 of which are still living. She was born in Norway as were both of her parents. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1870 and has been in the U.S. for 30 years. Her citizenship status is unknown ("Al" was struck through and "Un" was written above it as were most of the entries on this page). She could not read or write English but could speak English. Note: This entry did not indicate that she was widowed at this time. Although no "Wd"'s were found on this page, other pages in this enumeration by this enumerator did indicate some people as "Wd" rather than "S" or "M".
