St. Mary's in Streator was Immaculate Conception Church. There was also a St. Mary's Church in Kangley. Fr. O'Kelly was pastor of St. Mary's/Immaculate Conception and was noted for helping to bring miners' families across the pond. In the late 1870's the bishop sent him to New York, to bring people to this area. I think he spent a year there. To come to the US, you had to have a sponsor. To prove you would not be a burden to society.. By the way, Fr. Egan was titled Lord. Mr. Sabol, owner of a grocery store did the same for many Slovaks. St. Mary's is only a few blocks from the train station...I even have trouble finding Cottage St... So it would be easy for the family to find the church upon arrival. Col. Plumb also helped to bring families together...With a wife and kiddies at home, the men would show up for work on Monday. -- Streatorland Historical Society 306 South Vermillion Street Streator, Illinois 61364 Monday - Friday 9:30 - 2:30 Sunday 1 - 4 p.m. > I am researching the Dorman line from LaSalle County.
