Sorry, I checked the obit list for the Streator Free Press for the years, 1910-1918. The only Ralph's I found were Patrick Ralph, aged 80 and Mrs. Ralph, aged 79. Believed they were buried in Ottawa. If you do find a date of death, let me know, and I will check the Streator Monitor or Ind. Times. I have part of John Fraser's obit, it was next to an artilce about a cemetery dedication. His obit is dated May 24, 1921 Isabella Ogden died about Jan. 14, 1932, according to the Riverview Cemetery book. There is a Geo. T. Love 1873 - 1939 and Mary? 1875 - 1957 buried in Wenona City Cemetery. You might contact the Streator Public Library, S. Park St. and ask them to check for Isabella's obit. Also, 1939 obits have been indexed. However, he is only up to 1946, so you would need a death date for Mrs. Love. Thanks Joanie.
Sharon, one of my ancestors is mentioned in the book, a George TEMPLE, from Northumberland, England, one of the five trustees chosen for the village council in 1868. He was previously a coal miner and became a grocer when he moved to Streator from Steuben Town, Marshall County somewhere around 1860. The information regarding the book "Biography in Black"was kindly passed to me by Tim Bryant . Mike Temple, Spain.----- Original Message ----- From: <ccmc5j@mchsi.com> To: <ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 8:36 PM Subject: Re: [ILLASALLE] Mining in Streator > Some months ago I ordered a book titled "Biography In Black" - A History > of > Streator, Illinois by Paula Angle from the Streatorland Historical > Society. Hello List - I've just obtained a LaSalle County marriage record and am hoping that someone might be able to help me with these folks. I'm working to compile information on the family of George GIPE of Franklin County, Pennsylvania and Bureau County, Illinois and would love to fill in the blanks on this part of the family. The information on the marriage license is extremely slim, with many, many blanks. I'm hoping someone might recognize these names and help me further my research. I apologize for the length of this message, but I'm hoping that the details might help someone recognize this bunch. Date of License: November 6, 1886 Date of Marriage: November 8, 1886 Location of Marriage: Utica, LaSalle County, Illinois Groom: Jacob GIPE of Utica, age 35, son of George GIPE and Elizabeth BARNCORD. Bride: Miss Margaret (or Margret) A. COOPER, age 32 of Utica (no further details given) (both signed with a mark and spelling varies from one place to the other, so Marg(a)ret's actual spelling is unknown) Witnesses: John R. COOPER and Minnie Lavina COOPER Married by: John Cleur, Police Magistrate With so little to go on, I've been unable to gather further data. I do know that Jacob and Margaret had several children before separating. Margaret and children landed in the Bureau County Farm for a while and some of the children were absorbed into other families. I believe the following to be their children: (Please note that dates of birth are from the County Farm records and have NOT been confirmed and that several of the dates of birth pre-date the marriage) 1. Frank Edward GIPE - Born Buda, Bureau County, Illinois on March 19, 1883 (per obit) and was 13 years old when he arrived at the County farm on November 29, 1896 and left on June 12, 1897. Arrived again on May 17, 1898. His leg was later amputated at the farm. He died in Rock Island, IL on April 29, 1899 of bone cancer and was buried at Fifield Cemeter, Buda, Bureau County, Illinois. The obit identifies his father as Jacob GIPE, but there is no mention of his mother. 2. Courtney James GIPE - was 11 years old (b. abt 1885) when he entered the county farm on November 28, 1896. He left the farm on March 2, 1898 with his mother and Minnie. 3. Minnie Elizabeth GIPE - b. Oct. 15, 1889 (?). Arrived at County farm Nov. 24, 1896 and left on May 6, 1897 with mother, Margaret and brother John Daniel. Arrived back at the county farm on Jun. 8, 1897 and left on March 2, 1898 with mother and a James Courtney Gipe. In May 1899, she was taken in by Dr. Jacob STEWART and his wife Mary E. of Moline, Illinois. Census records from 1900 forward, record her surname as STEWART. 4. Fred GIPE - born April 13, 1894. Arrived at the county farm on June 8, 1897 and left the farm on October 4, 1897. His record states that he was "taken by John COOPER, Tiskilwa (Bureau County) as his own." I presume this likely to be one of Margaret's relatives, perhaps even the John who witnessed her marriage. 5. John Daniel (or David) GIPE - born July 9, 1895. Came to the county farm on November 24, 1896 and left with his mother, Margaret, on May 6, 1897. The listing on Margaret contradicts the age given on the marriage license. She entered the County Farm in Nov. 1896 and left the farm on May 6, 1897 with Minnie and John Daniel. She is said to have been 30 in November, 1896, thus born about 1866 rather than 1854 as the marriage license would indicate. It is possible that these are two different Margaret's married to Jacob GIPE, but that will need to be proved. I would like to know if there is further marriage information recorded in LaSalle, and whether anyone recognizes any of these names and can direct me further. Thank you. Shelly in California
I did a search on Ancestry.com and that person had 1896 as the year of death, but I could not find an obit for that year either. It should have been in the Streator paper. Even if he died in Ottawa, they would have switched trains in Streator to bring the body back to Wenona. Sometimes, the paper would even run those in their local news column. Jo-ann, I have several Drewitz from LaSalle but no Dannewitz. Leslie
Roger, I'd like a copy of the document please. I'm researching my own TEMPLE families in Northumberland, and most of them were coal miners, some even emigrated to the U.S.A. in the 1850's and 1870's and worked in the coal mines in La Salle and Macoupin Counties. I am looking for the birth and death of the son of James A. Ralph and his wife, Frances Irene (Foley) Ralph. Frances sometimes used the name of Irene Frances. They were married November 7, 1909 in Streator. They had three children. In a hospital record it states that a son died at about two years of age of meningitis. Their third child, a daughter, was born June 16 ,1914. James A. Ralph was the son of Anthony and Ellen (Condon) Ralph. Frances was the daughter of John Frances Foley and Mary Ellen (Corrigan) Foley. Based on when they were married and when the third child was born, the son was born between 1910 and 1913. He would have died between 1912 and 1916. Can anyone tell me if there is any cemetery record or birth record on this son and if so, what was his name and what were the dates of birth and death? James was from Odell. Frances Irene was from Cornell. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you. Carol Peoria, AZ
Oh, 10-4, as we say (some of us, anyway). It was Georgea, a gal who's married to a guy from Streator, who first sent me the URL. The state of Illinois published annual mining reports. The reports include the accidents in the mines, including names and how the accident happened. If the miner died, if not, how long he was off work, etc. The books are not indexed, but are divided by mining districts in the state. But, I have no idea where you could view the books, other than a state agency. This was SEVERAL years ago, and I can't remember the state agency that had some/most of the books. This agency also issued mine manager's certificates, engineer's papers. At that time the information was kind of "hit or miss". The State of Illinois had three Mine Rescue Stations est. after the Cherry Fire, this agency was looking for the location of the one in La Salle - they had lost the location. Oh, those guys worked like hellfire. It's a wonder they lived very long, having to work all bent over all the time and breathe the coal dust. My great-grandpa was a miner at age 10 in the Bristol area of England (Gloucestershire) and came to the U.S. in 1880. He died at age 67 of "miner's asthma." The actual name of the Wenona Library is "Bond Library" after a Mr. Bond who donated the money for its establishment. When I was there a few years ago, they had a very good librarian, but she was the only employee and did not do any obituary lookups. However, she does have someone she recommends, providing the exact date of death is known. The phone number is (815) 853-4665. The library is small and is not open all days. Joy in California
