Joanie, I see there is a copy of the book at this location. It will be #11 on the page. Maybe someone might be interested. Col. Plumb went to England to get money and miners. The English mine owners lost too many men, so they asked their gov. to put a stop to it. Then agents were employed to encourage miners from eastern Europe to come. Many of these families came in the late 1870's, Bartko, Merks, Pearchard(Perhach?), Urich, Fellow, Martin, Cheveny, Harcharik, Super, Masley. Most of the Polish people seem to come at or after the turn of the century. Don't know when the Italians came, probably after 1900, not many of them work/stayed in the mines in Streator. Migration routes are interesting. Most of the information I have comes from obituaries or funeral home records. The words "spent a year in New York, then came to Streator", later obituaries have "came directly to Streator in 189?" Some funeral home books had the question, "how long a resident of U.S./or state." If everything is OK, I will be at the museum this afternoon, going to miss the Eagles at the Rock. We have a couple of the annual coal mining reports, what year did John Kerestes die? Long time ago, I asked the Streator library if they could get the books on an interlibrary loan, but no luck. They could not find the books. There HAS to be copies of the books somewhere. I checked the state library in Springfield, maybe I should try the U of I? I have several John Kerestes John Kerestes, jr 1873 - 1944 married to Anna Bakalar, who had a son named John John Kerestes, sr, 1843 - 1927 married to Anna Botko? John Kerestes married to Pauline Plesko, had a dau. Would you mind checking your copy of the book for the HOOTON or MASKER or MASEKER surnames? They lived in Streator from the early 1880s to just before 1900. Thank you, Shelly in California
Hi Joanie, You inadvertantly answered a question I had. Our family was Slovak, and they also were miners, as I believe they were in the "Old Country". I wondered if this book had the smaller mines, but you say it doesn't. Is there any history or record that does? I know Tim's grandfather had a mine, and his death was caused by an injury he sustained when he went into the mine after a charge failed to go off, then did when he was down. He was not killed outright, but it was the eventual cause of his death (family story). His name was John Kerestes. I know there were relatives in Pennsylvania on the Yednock side of the family (Jedinak, Yedinak, Yednock...but actual Slovak name was Palya, from gravestone.) So interesting! Twila in AZ, but back soon. --- bluejay201@mchsi.com wrote: > > Biography in Black is the history of Streator > from about the 1830's when > Bazore, Bronson, Mackey and other families came from > Ohio and Penn to farm. > From the title, you would think it was a history of > coal mining, but it is > not. Biography in Black is the history of Streator from about the 1830's when Bazore, Bronson, Mackey and other families came from Ohio and Penn to farm. From the title, you would think it was a history of coal mining, but it is not. It talks about Col. Plumb, the Vermillion Coal Co.(VC) and Kangley, building the railroads, but does not mention the smaller mines, types of mining, names of miners unless they contributed in other ways to the history of Streator. The book written by Paula Angle was based on Ted Weber's radio program's from the 1960's. Heenanville mine closed about 1906. While coal was still being mined, by 1912 the glass and shale industries were growing and they are covered in the book. Coal was still mined in the 1950's; one was using the shale, and the French mine and Bavolar's were still in operation. what is the book "bio in Black" ? thank you sgs
I have been following the threads too. It is a book about coal mines in Streator,Illinois which is about 15 miles south of Ottawa. It was mainly Italian, Irish and Polish that immigrated and worked in the coal mines in the area in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Still working on mainly census entries and trying to find manifest for your Marx's. Should be on Ellis Island site I would think, but haven't found it yet. Have you been on the site? It is free and is just worth looking at. Hi Joanie, Yes, Jasper P Dicus married Sarah Mowbray, the daughter of Thomas and Margaret. I posted a query last summer on the Mowbray's and got some information back. Jasper is the son of George W. and Hannah Dicus of Wenona. Jasper is my great grandfather. Thank you for the information though. I'm trying to find if there was a death notice in the Ottawa newspaper for Viola Evensen. She died in Jan 1996. Does anyone have access to the local newspaper in Ottawa? Does anyone know if the newspaper is online? Any help is greatly appreciated. Robert Evensen Cambridge, Massachusetts
Recently a Sharon Smith said she had ordered the book Biography in Black. I was wondering if the name Grivy appears in the list of names in the back. I have that family from the Streator area in my lineage. Another Sharon Smith
