    3. Just looking at the other bio's in Dayton Twp. (same book) David G. Deenis came from Newark, Licking Co., Ohio in May 1836. Returned and came bakc in 1840. The Green brothers also came from Licking Co., Ohio (there father also came and he wasw a contractor on the Illinois-Michigcan Canal here - so explains the location choice). Henry and Lafayette Hess came from Shenandoah Co VA So they certainly were amoung friends here.

    3. History of LaSalle Co., Illinois (published 1886 by Inter-State Publishing Co.) might I please request a lookup from Vol. 2 p 89 - apparently about the Dayton township. I am looking for information re: Solomon Channell of Ohio. John W. Channel was born March 10, 1849 in Licking County, Ohio, a son of Solomon and Elizabeth (Wamsley) Channel, the former born in Shenandoah County, VA., in July, 1801, and the latter a native of Licking County, Ohio, born in 1810. His father settled in Rutland Township, where he bought 160 acres of land, and lived there many years, when he came to Dayton where he died. His death occurred at the home of our subject, in the spring of 1875. John W. was but two years old when his parents settled here, and here he was reared, receiving only a limited education. He first engaged in business at St. Louis in partnership with John W. Doming, manufacturing horse collars by hand. He sold his interest to his partner on account of poor health, and engaged in stock of groceries. The business was established in 1871, by J.T. Makinson. Mr. Channel was married June 27, 1868 to Josephine M. Makinson, daughter of G.W. and Charlotte B. (Evans) Makinson. They have one child living ! - Eva M., born in Dayton, Ill., July 31, 1869. John, Lula and an infant are deceased. Politically Mr. Channel is a Republican. George W. Makinson (same book page 98-99) son of Evan and Martha (Wain) Makinson, was born in Congleton, Cheshire, England, July 15, 1826. He was reared and educated in his native country, and in 1840 emigrated to America with his parents. The family remained at Alton, Ill., a short time, where his mother worked at the millinery trade a year, the father and George going to a farm in Linn County, MO., after which his mother followed them to the farm. he and his mother came to New Lenox, Will County ILL and in 1843 he worked at the harness makers trade at Joliet. In the fall of 1844 he came to Dayton, Ill., and worked in Green & Son's woolen mill about twenty years. he was married Sept. 21, 1847 to Charlotte B. Evans, daughter o fJoseph and Sarah (DeLong) Evans, who died in this county. Mrs. Makinson was born Feb. 12, 1828 in Chittenden County, Vt. She came with her parents to Ohio, and from there to LaSalle County, Ill., in 1843. Mr. and Mrs. Makinson have had seven c! hildren - Josephine, wife of J.W. Channel, of Dayton, Ill.,; Anna M. wife of Charles J. Hudson, of Dayton, Jesse W. working in Ottawa, Ill.; Charles J. married and living in Janesville, Wis.; George L., at home; Edgar born March 12, 1865 and died May 24, 1881, and Lottie E., born Feb. 1, 1871. Mr. Makinson is serving his second term as Justice of the Peace. He also holds the office of Postmaster, having served continuously since 1854 with the exception of two years. Hope this helps, Margaret

    3. Michael, I can sometimes access certain titles through the People search on HeritageQuest, but this is a difficult one to find. I have requested a copy through the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign, and I should be able to get you an answer within several days--maybe next week. If someone else can locate the info, please do. I urge folks to look into Inter-Library Loan options at their local libraries to see if these county histories might be available. 3. Tim; Thanks for your help, very much appreciated. I actually have tried to get the book through my library options but to no avail. My only other option has been the FHL in SLC, but I can not justify a 300 mile trip at this time, so I will patiently wait until opportunity presents itself. Of course the research material I am working from does not offer anything but the reference, no substance. Such is the rough luck at times. 3. Wow, you mention of Mrs Glenn Tombaugh, her name was Gertrude and she was my 4-H leader for years when I lived out there not to far with the Holmes' and I might add she was a wonderful leader, very capable woman. Janet bluejay201@mchsi.com wrote: I was just going to ask if that was Esther, she was one of my Dad's friends in grade school. . Heenanville school was a one room county (Mackey) school until the coal miners arrived. Then a second room was added on, so it became a two- room "one room rural school" And Esther and my Dad were in the same room. In fact, she gave the museum the only photo I had seen of my Dad at that age. When did Esther pass on, my Dad died in 1986. I can't find my Biography in Black, but my copy of the Memoir's of Heenanville are on my bookself next to my computer. The short article about the Tombaugh family was written by Mrs. Glenn Tombaugh. 3. As far as I know, the Koontz school is no longer standing. I believe it was sold and taken down. I have many fond memories of my school days there. We lived 4 mi west of Streator and 1 1/2 mi. south Koontz was on the north South road.. and I lived just South 1/2 mi from the school with my Grandparents ---David And Winifred Fraser Holmes. The house is still there and I have a first cousin who lives there now and they have done much to update the house.. That house was built from a church that once stood out in that area not too far away. I was a Goslin and perhaps some of you remember the Goslin Drug Store in Streator which were my uncles and their other 2 brothers had a Goslin Drug Store in Mendota, IL of which the one was my father Alfred Goslin. The Lightholder Lumber in Streator was owned by John Lightholder and his wife was my gr. aunt(Blanche Holmes) Janet bluejay201@mchsi.com wrote: I heard the Koontz school is still "standing." Before you get to the Kangley turnoff, on the north side of the road, there is a horse pasture. Next to the large barn is supposed to be the old school. They made the door bigger to get equipment in. I wonder if it is true. La Salle Co. has a one room school, but if this is the building is the Koontz school, it would be nice if it could be saved. Of course, I have always wanted an outhouse for the Streator museum. Good Grief, I hope none of the board members are on this list. 1. Richards in Bruce Townshiip
    2. ...from page 264 La Salle County Lore, pub. by La Salle County Historical Soc. in Utica His home on N 1709 road was a long way from Frederick Richard's birthplace. He grew up in Germany and, being apprenticed to a coooper, learned how to make kegs and barrels. When he was 18, like many others of the time, he decided his prospects were bette on this side of the Atlantic. After 47 days in a sailing ship on the ocean and more days on the waters of the Eric Canal, Great Lakes and Illinois & Michigan Canal, he arrived in La Salle County. He farmed during the day light hours and made pork and flour barrels at night. There was a market for butter firkins, too, so he gradually accumulated cattle, hogs and land. Part of Richards' 2,200 acres in the county was along the route chosen for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. He platted a town on the tracks near wher he lived and was postmaster there. The settlement names Richards never expanded beyond a few buidings and the little track-side house that still bears the sign, "Fairbanks Scales." But Richards, the man, has gond down in history as giving generously to the community, both of himself and his wealth. -- Streatorland Historical Society 306 South Vermillion Street Streator, Illinois 61364 Monday - Friday 9:30 - 2:30 Sunday 1 - 4 p.m. > What building is located east on Richard's Road across the railroad > tracks in the first mile off Route 23? 2. I think that was Richards Station, it was even on the state map until a few years ago. Mr. Richards, an early settler, was a farmer and stock dealer. His, is the big barn that I mentioned before. If you go east and turn south at the first road, you can see the old barn. Keep on that road and you end up at the west end of Marilla Park. He was also the postmaster out there, but he lived in town in his later years. Apparently, it was a political appointment, the post office died about the same time he did. Fellow I was talking to out by Richards "three" story barn, thought that it had been moved, not razed. Boy, that is a huge barn, you see the barn and think big, then as you get closer, and closer..Wow. There are so few large barns left, all you see now is Morton buildings. 1. Re: [ILLASALLE] Why can't I find CLYDE TOMBAUGH?
    2. I was just going to ask if that was Esther, she was one of my Dad's friends in grade school.
