    2. I remember a speaker at the LCGG who talked about the Michigan canal and how they would harvest ice and they would advertise "clean" ice. It was ice that they would cut from the canal. I've heard a couple of stories--that the first plant was taken out by a tornado in the 19-teens or earlier and then rebuilt but demolished on purpose (maybe in the '40s?). You can still see part of the dam structure out there, and I have an old (1925) USGS topographic map--the same one that hangs by the microfilm machine at the Streator library--that shows Spring Lake as a real lake. 1. Re: [ILLASALLE] Harvesting Ice
    2. I became interested in harvesting ice because I was researching a Schurman family. C. R. Schurman owned Home Ice Co. and part of his adv. had Spring Lake Ice. Schruman came to Streator in 1894 and bought an existing Ice business. He died in 1911, but his sons carried on the business until late 20's or early 30's. About that time a lot of ice dealers either changed to "Ice & Fuel" or Ice Cream or disappeared. Scheidt Ice & Fuel was in business in the 1950's. HORSE DRAWN milk wagons -- 1947 might have been the last year?? I will check on that. We have a newspaper article about the last wagon. 2. Anyone out there remember tales of harvesting ice as a business? Did they put straw or sawdust between the blocks? I had always heard straw, but internet sites have sawdust. Or was that just what was available? When did the ice harvest stop and machinery take over? I remember one farmer had his own brick ice house, but his family were early pioneers. We had a 1938 Fridgadire? when I was a kid, but the houses across the street still put the 25/50# signs in the window. 3. Gini, This is Gwen. Henry Johnson was born in Miller LaSalle Co., IL in 1835. His wife Ellen Olson was born 1833 more than probably in Norway. Now if that means Norway, Norway or Norway Twp., in IL I don't know. Her parents were born in Askerhus, Buskernd, Norway. Her parents names were Austin Olson Sr., and Carolina Hayer. I have had some researcher done on the Sloopers but have not connected Ellen's family with them as yet. Now weather or not Henry Johnson's family is connected with them I am not sure but worth looking into. If you wouldn't mind doing this for me that would be great. What I am trying hard to determine was who Henry Johnson's parents were which an earlier lister said that possibly his parents were from somewhere in Norway. 3. Gwen, I have studied the early Norwegian immigration. There was not much activity before 1836. If she was born here in 1835, my guess her parents came over with the Sloopers in 1825. Cleng Peerson was the one who is credited with encouraging the people from Norway to come to the United States. I'm sure there is a passenger list on the web for the passengers in 1825. There is an organized group of people who descend from the 1825 group. If you are interested, I'll try and find some more information about them. They settled in what was known as the Fox Valley Settlement (near Norway, IL and not far from LaSalle), before moving on to Leland, Koshkonong Prairie (near Madison, WI), etc. Al, not sure if I've told you or not but my great grandfather was a passenger on the Aegir/Ægir in 1837. I do have the link to that passenger list, if you don't. I have spent the afternoon trying to find a passenger list for the Ørnen - ORNEN which my great grandmother sailed on in 1844 ... so far no luck. :-( I did find the microfilm number, but I like it all typed in so I can just copy it. ;-) Gini

    3. Hi Gwen, I can't help with your Henry Johnson born 1835 but have a Johnson from Miller that I would like to see if you know anything about. I have a Henry J. Johnson born 26 Mar 1865 in Miller, he married Hilda Jaeger in the town of Norway 11 Mar 1886. Henry's parents are listed as John Johnson and Christine Fruland/Frøland. Christine was born in LaSalle 1839, her parents from Norway sailed on the Aegir/Ægir in 1837 from Norway. Now here is where this part of my family takes a turn, and why I have not entered this in my database. Records show two surnames-- Johnson and Norwick/Norwich for this line. My family records show Norwick, other records Johnson. If you run into this in your research please email me and I will send what I have on this research. I have John Johnson/Norwick and Christina Fruland's line but will not use this in my data till I put and end to the surname question. Some of this research is online in Oslo, Norway on a page in English. Scroll half way down till you see a photo, some LaSalle history I sent and need to edit some day. http://www.winnem.com/siec/nsiec_emigration.htm#note_2 Much of this data on this page came from good research help from some of you up in LaSalle and Kendall Co.!
