    2. John, Not rockin' your boat...buuuuuuut, the reason that I phrased it that way was because my husbands GG Grandfather - on EVERY census record - gave his place of employment as "Zinc Mine" as did all his male relatives... My Father in law also has a diary of sorts that has been passed down with references to all males of the family working in the zinc mines. I'm not disputing your assertion - however, it's obviously hard to break out of a certain mind set and phraseology (is that even a word? LOL) that has been around the family for so many years.. I acquiesce to you, John and thanks! Les

    3. Hi- For the record, there are no Zinc Mines in La Salle. The Zinc Companies (M&H in La Salle, and Illinois Zinc in Peru) brought the ore in and smelted it in the plants there. Then they also had the Rolling Mills to make the Zinc Sheets. The companies were located in that area because there was ample coal to fire the furnaces. It was cheaper to import the zinc than to export the coal. Back in 1950 I worked in the Illinois Zinc Co. and my father in law worked at M & H. My great grandfather was killed in a mining accident at the M & H Coal mine in the late 1800's. 3. Hello, I'm a new subscriber to the list and have been appreciative of the interesting sharing among the members. I am searching for information about my 2nd great grandparents. Zofia and Michal Ratajczak immigrated in 1881 from Posen, Prussia. They lived in LaSalle durin the 1880s and 1890s. Michal worked also at the Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc Works; he is listed in the LaSalle 1886 directory. He died in Dec.1891 according to probate documents signed by his wife Zofia. I can find no record of his death in LaSalle. Zofia remarried Joseph Emmerling in 1894 and they are listed as living at Otter Creek in the 1900 census. By 1910, Joseph is a widower living with his daughter in Spring Valley. I am also looking for a record or obituary for Zofia Ratajczak Emmerling. Thank you. jacki rose

    2. Sorry, this index is for the Streator paper. The Guild in Ottawa has the index for the Ottawa papers, and since Ottawa is the county seat, they covered a broader area. The Streator paper had Dwight, Cornell news. Sometimes someone from LaSalle would make our paper, if they had friends in Streator, or had lived in the Streator area at one time. 3. Taking a wild shot in the dark probably with your Nolans but seeing their travel path from Peoria - Bloomington to LaSalle County would you let me know when you find their baptismal certificates who the sponsors were? I'd like to compare it against the relations I had down there and their sponsors. This seems to be a common path followed by several of the County Kerry families and we do have Nolan's in the tree - but I don't know of those that came to Illinois. Such a prolific bunch it certainly is quite possible. Margaret

    3. Hi, Tony-- Just one further suggestion: You might subscribe to the Bond County listserve and pose your query there. I've done this while tracking down the movements of one branch of my family--they settled in Peoria County, then moved to McLean Cty, then to Livingston. With one post to the Peoria list, I got responses from folks both in Peoria and McLean. Good luck. The only way is up! I went to the L.C.G.G. in Ottawa and searched through the obits & baptismal records for any and all Nolans. The obits were quite descriptive but gave no names of family members, so that was of no help. Since my g-grandfather was born in Peoria, I have the need to go there and search for birth cert. or announcement in the paper. In the 1880 fed. census for Il. there is a family, Mathias & Esther Nolan w/ 6 children, one is 3 yr old Michael w/ a 7yr old brother named Johnny. They resided in Ripley, Il. Bond Co.. I have corresponded w/ a g-granddaughter of Michael Joseph and she believes this family to be our ancestors. I need proof. I have several sources that say John Nolan is Michael Joseph's father & one that says Sarah is his mother. If John & Sarah are the middle names of Mathias & Esther, I need to find out. The 1920 Sarah would have been born about 1836, Esther about 1837. Since no family member knows of any siblings for Michael Joseph I am trying to find a name or two to possibly tie in w/ Mathias, Esther & family, or not. I too, have searched for Sarah Whalen/Nolan at Ellis Isle., SSDI and all that Ancestry.com has to offer. 1920 Sarah was the only one to stand out. The search goes on. Make the best of your day. Tony

    3. Hi, Tony-- I sincerely doubt that hospital records would be available for viewing. (I'd be happy to know if anyone knows otherwise.) I pursued a few standard avenues of research: 1. For starters, I looked to see the marriage of John and Sarah in the statewide marriage index, http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marriage.html, and I couldn't find it. 2. If you search the 1916-1950 Illinois death index, http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/idphdeathsrch.html, you'll find several Sarah Nolans, but they are mostly in the Chicago area. This really doesn't signify much. Deaths were recorded in the county where the person died. Sarah could have been in another hospital in Cook County when she died. 3. When did your g-g-grandfather die? I found a John Nolan who died in Streator: NOLAN JOHN JR M/W UNK 4500247 1929-10-25 LA SALLE STREATOR I would *hazard* a guess that this fellow may be the offspring of Sarah Nolan, as Sarah was listed as a widow if I made out the census record correctly. There is probably an obituary for this John Nolan in the Streator newspaper, which is available on microfilm at the Streator library. Obits typically contain lots of information. If you can get your hands on any other names and death dates, pursue their obits. Good luck in your quest!
