    3. HQ does NOT have a serchable index for 1880 that is why you have to BROWSE. at familysearch you can get the name of town, page number so makes the search easier. 2. <<Marriages before 1877 only give the date, bride and grooms name and who married them. If they are under age a permission may be recorded. Jenan Jobst LaSalle County Genealogy I have marriage records for two siblings, one married in 1870 and the other in 1875, both in Bureau County. The 1870 record gives only the names of the persons getting married, the date, and the person who married them. The preprinted form also states that the groom was over 21 years of age and the bride over 18. I assume this to mean that these were the ages of consent in 1870. The 1875 record gives the grooms name, location where he lives, and his age. The same info is stated for the bride. In addition, the record indicates the date and place of marriage and who married them. The marriage affidavit printed on the reverse in my copy also includes the information indicating that the mother of the bride is consenting to the marriage of her daughter. This consent is hand written on the bottom of the form. The groom was 24 and the bride was 14. it would appear then, that some records in the couple years prior to 1877 contained more information than the earlier marriage records. Shelly

    3. Many libraries offer free access to Heritage Quest (census and history books). Those members who have Ottawa Illinois Reddicks Library Cards can access this information from their homes. First go to http://www.reddicklibrary.org/ Then choose databases under Reference. This brings up a new screen where you can select Heritage Quest Online and enter your library card number. You can search by name and location, etc in books (LaSalle County books are on there). Also the census records excluding 1850, 1880 (which is free on the familysearch.org site anyway) and 1930 (which they are working on). They do not offer the soundex option for census searches but if you can narrow down the area you are searching you can use the advanced search with first name, age, place of birth, etc. to find who you are looking for. Be sure to check your local library and see if this fantastic service is available in your area! Margaret

    2. Marriages before 1877 only give the date, bride and grooms name and who married them. If they are under age a permission may be recorded. The Genealogy Guild only charges a quarter for a copy. The church record may give parents names if you know what church they were married in. The Genealogy Guild has some of the records of the catholic churches and other churches in the county. 2. Bonnie - If someone replies to this question off-list, please post the answer here for all to see. I've been searching to the answer to this question as well. I believe we had a very large discussion about this on the Bureau County list a number of years ago. I also have an ancestor who married young. When she married in 1885, she was just 14 years old, but gave her age as 15 on the certificate. I believe her maternal grandmother gave permission for her marriage, although the record is somewhat unclear about that. Another relative married in 1874 at the age of 14 with the permission granted by her mother (father was deceased). Although these are decades after your 1858 marriage, it does appear that at this time, marriages could take place at that age as long as the adult with responsibility for their care, gave permission for the marriage to take place. Shelly Thanks Tim. What was Illinois legal age for marriage in 1858? One of the girls was only fourteen when she was married (unheard of, at least in the bride's family) but I suspect she married without parental permission. The groom, age 21 was a farmer's son from Putnam Co. She was a farmer's daughter from LaSalle Co. and they were married in Livingston Co. perhaps in order to hide the marriage from her father. 3. Thanks Tim. 3. Bonnie, Boy, that's a good question. In my research of my g-g-aunts and -uncles in Livingston County, I found that one aunt whose husband I knew of was actually married to another guy at the age of 15 (I found this out when I obtained the guardianship papers for the minor siblings after their father died.) There was no record of that marriage (or I haven't been able to find it), and this was back in 1891. Sorry I could not be of further help. I hope someone else on the list can shed some light. I'm also interested in the legalities of cousins marrying cousins in the period of the mid to later 1800s. 3. I would strongly suggest that instead of contacting the LaSalle County Clerk for a certified copy of the marriage license you contact the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild! I believe the county cost for a search (which entitles you to a copy IF found) is Fourteen Dollars. They will conduct a search a few years either way for the one document you requested and that is it! Now contacting the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild with a donation will net you not only the identical document minus the county seal - but if you request additional info. on the family - you'll find a treasure trove of information there. The year you are requesting will not include the marriage application so the info. will be very limited as to the bride, groom and witness names period usually. After 1877 the applications are with the marriage certificate. If the marriage took place in the Ottawa area there is a chance a write up in the local paper took place and the Guild has copied and indexed the marriage write ups for the Ottawa paper. The address to contact the Guild is found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~illcgg/ A listing of the holdings of the Guild can be found at this page - along with an online searchable database of obituaries available and county probate records (click the links at the top of tihs page) http://www.lscgg.org/ Also certain church records are found there; the cemetery records have transcribed; census records; county history books have been indexed plus info. to other people researching the same family name are on file there too. 3. Bonnie, In all likelihood, not much more than what you get from the listing on the state archive. Here's a quotation from Jenan Jobst of the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild on that subject: "Prior to 1877 the marriage licenses only give the name of the bride and groom, the date of the license and the date of the marriage and who married them. If one of them was under age there may be an additional piece of paper with the parents permission on it. After 1877 the licenses usually give a lot of information on them but sometimes they don't. The LaSalle county genealogy guild has copies of all these marriage licenses so don't pay $12 to the county to get a copy." (from the list, 7-23-04) I'd be curious to know whether there was a statewide edict that changed the law in 1877, and I'm guessing there was. What additional information might be gained from the marriage certificate for that year? Bonnie
