    1. Re: MASEKER or MASKER
    2. Hi Joanie - You've done it again! Wow, John certainly didn't wait long to remarry. John MASEKER married (Sarah) Ellen HOOTON on July 22, 1888. With young children, this was probably a necessity. I would LOVE a copy of those obits. Please let me know how I can pay any related costs. The child of John MASKERS would be an unknown older sibling of my g-grandmother who was born Feb. 9, 1891. Her sister, Pearl, was born 1895 and married Stephen ELAM. Frank Joseph is eventually moved to Peoria and is listed in the IL Death Index. I had no idea about that additional child because none of Sarah Ellen's census records indicate there is a non-living child (although it explains the long gap between the marriage and the birth of my g-grandmother), so I've not yet researched them. I assume he/she would likely be buried at Riverview and would love to know for sure. When you are able and feeling better, I would be grateful for anything you can tell me. Shelly Hi, I can't believe I did not notice this before. Mary E. Maseker has an obit in Streator paper for May 25, 1888 Weekly edition (Tuesday) There is also an obit for "Child of John Maskers" listed for Aug 13 & 14, 1891 in the Daily paper. Aged 20 Months. With all this rain, my arthritis is really getting to me. It might take a couple of days to get moving and get up the steps to the library. William and Minnie are buried in Riverview. What happened to Frank Joseph? And the other 2 children? Do you know if the 20 months old child is buried in Riverview? Joanie

    1. MASEKER or MASKER
    2. Hello. Are there any death indexes available for the period between 1880 and 1888? I am hoping to find the death record of a Mary MASKER or MASEKER. My gg-grandparents (John MASKER and Ellen HOOTON) married on July 22, 1888 in LaSalle County. John MASEKER or MASKER had been married previously. I believe his first wife to be Mary PARR or Mary DAVIS, possibly born in Ireland about 1847. John and Mary lived in Dover, Morris County, NJ in 1880 and appear to have had two children - William and Joseph. Both names show up in LaSalle County records, although Joseph also went by Frank Joseph MASKER. When John died in Streator in 1896, his obit states that he had four children. He only had two with my gg-grandmother and I believe these other two to be William and Frank/Joseph. The obit also states that they had come from Clinton, Iowa about 10 years earlier. I would like to find the death record for Mary in hopes of filling in some details on her and possibly filling in the gaps in those years. Thanks, Shelly in California

    2. Bonnie Ostler
    3. Hi Joanie Thanks for responding to my long convoluted message. I would like to be certain that none of the three SEXTON children, Elizabeth H. b. c 1838, Eliza b. 1843/44 and John b. 1849 are in North Emery Cemetery records because they all dropped out of sight. The appearance in James will of "my daughter Sarah F. Bardwell, Lucy Ann Hart......" and the obvious preference for Sarah is mysterious and intriguing. I have a bit of a bizarre theory about what happened. After his 1st wife's death in childbirth 1852, James was left with three children to raise and a farm to work. Any relatives were hundreds of miles away. The two year old boy may have died but I think it more likely that he was adopted out. The two little girls who were about 11 yrs and 7 yrs old grew up like Topsy with no female supervision. After five years James decided to remarry. For whatever reasons, his young teenage daughters became so upset with him that they changed their given names. Elizabeth H. chose the name Lucy Ann. Eliza became Sarah Frances. James and both daughters married in 1858. Sarah, who was only fourteen, married in Livingston Co. presumably without parental consent. The groom lived in Putnam Co. and she was in LaSalle. She did not have her first child until 1860. Years later, James' lawyer was unable to locate Sarah at the time James died. He sent a letter to Lucy in Iowa to inform her of James' bequest. Lucy never signed off on the probate. I see no way of proving the change of name theory. Bonnie -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 2. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. My arthritis decided to put me in existance mode. Feed the cats, clean the liter and pick up carry out. Okay is said catS, but I will never tell how many. I never though about Elizabeth being a step child...hmmm. Perhaps the first children died at the same time due to the same illness. "Milk sicknes" and the like could wipe out an entire family. Also, perhaps James and Elizabeth stopped off in some other state, Ohio? Had their children before coming to Illinois in 1848. I remember reading that the first brick masons in Streator came from Ohio. Regarding Edwin Carter. There was an Edwin Carter, about the same age and born in New York in Farm Ridge Twp. He was the oldest? son of Asa and Hannah (Braymer) Carter. Maybe he was living with the Sexton's while he was learning to be a brick mason. 3. Well I'm slow on the draw here. Thank you Karen. I just assumed that 1880 wasn't available on HQ since it isn't in the index. We both know what they say happens when you assume!! Well, that's an apt description of me just now. I've used the browse before of course looking for someone that I can't find indexed but never noticed that 1880 was among the years browsable. 3. Hey, that's cool. I keep forgetting about the browse capability, and apparently these census records are continually being edited and not all the images may be indexed. The virtue of the Ancestry.com search is that you do get some usable info, even with limited access to the records. 3. Through our local library Heritage Quest is accessed at your home using your bar code from your library card. It doesn't take you to Heritage Quest Home page. It goes to Search Census, Search Books, Search Persi, Search Revolutionary War, there's nothing that says Census facts anywhere that I can see. Census Data Currently Searchable is 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1890 (very limited of course), 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Partial. Still a great plus.
