    3. I am interested in info on John G. Evans and wife, Mary Edwards. John and Mary lived in 1856 in Ottawa,IL. They lived there I think, until Mary died in about 1867. John then married Eliza Scott or Shott in about 1869. John and Mary are buried in Peru cemetery. I would like to have a copy of their tombstone. I will pay the cost involved. John owned a few lots in Ottawa. John came to America in 1829. I don't know when he came to LaSalle. I don't know Mary Edwards parents or siblings. Does anyone know anything about this family? Please help. Thanks, Audrey Beaty

    2. There were 3 articles in the paper. June 16 was just a "card of thanks" June 13 was a "normal" obituary. It stated that her husband had died more that fifteen years before in Kansas, and 8 children The June 25th one is a rather nice obit, which I typed in but got lost in cyberspace (my computer went down) states her husband died Feb. 8, 1889. Names 9 children. Our public library charges $1.00 for each copy from microfilm. Just put $2.00 plus a SASE and send it to the Streatorland Historical Society for the Jun 13 and June 25 obituaries. Plus we would appreciate a donation. I took notes from the following obituaries: George M. who married Margaret Anderson. died on Saturday, (Jan 26, 1929) at his dau. home, Mrs. Caroline (Jabez) Morrison at 307 W. Lincoln Ave. Buried from Solon's Funeral Home in Phillips. born September 26, 1846 in Ohio. married in Ottawa to Margaret Anderson. Their children were: George of Streator and Edward of Moore, Mont. and Mrs. Morrison. he was a teamster and employed in one of the local livery stables and was therefore widely known. Margaret, his wife died in Sept. 1904 of cancer at St. Mary's hospital, she was born in 1845 in La Salle Co. and buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Streator. Her obituary has four children: Mrs. William Edward of Otter Creek. Mrs. DAVID Morrison and Edward and George. Sylvester was born March 14, 1849, was a teamster and a farmer, lived in Streator, Chillicothe, Manville area. Died in the family residence on E. 12th st. in Streator. Did he Marry?? Buried in Phillips Don't know anything about Mary and Geo. H. Rice, they moved out west, Kansas, Wyoming??I did some research on the Rice family a long time ago, but don't know if he fits into that family. Do you know more about them? James P. died Jun 19, 1949 at St. Mary's Hospital and was buried in Phillips. was buried from Elias Funeral Home and was in the coal & Lumber business, (he might have be engaged in the hauling of coal & lumber, since the other bros. were teamsters?) BORN May 22, 1854 Near Marseilles, Il. John W.--my computer batter went dead, so I did not get to John. Anna maried to a Jackson??? living in Colorado Rhoda born dec 23, 1864 in Wilmington, Illinois, moved to Odell a few years later, when she was 20 years old family went to Kansas and seven years later came back to Streator. 1884 - 1891--the would place them in Kansas at the time of the father's death. Rhoda's obituary is dated Jun 21, 1939, page 2 Cynthia died Jan. 4, 1950, buried from Elias Funeral Home. born Mar. 27, 1867 in Odell. Barbara married Frank McGee. 3. Cynthia-- The LaSalle County Genealogy Guild, http://www.lscgg.org/, has marriage certificates available for a small fee (much better than at the courthouse, as I believe Jenan Jobst stated recently. You should know, however, that previous to 1877 a marriage license will not include much genealogical information. I am not researching the YOUNG line, but I am somewhat interested in the ROWE or ROE line. A distant cousin in my HOFFNER line married Rosie Roe (or Rowe) STOTT in Livingston County, just south and southwest of LaSalle County. I am researching the two people above. They are brother and sister and children of Eli ROBINSON and Charlotte YOUNG niece of Brigham YOUNG. In the will of John YOUNG in April 1870 Salt Lake City is mentioned that $10.00 cash was to be given to both Delos and Celetia ROBINSON children of Charlotte ROBINSON deceased. Delos married Emeline ROWE in Aug. 1856 and Celestia married Samuel ROWE Nov 1865. Both in LaSalle. I have the marriage information that includes license number can someone tell me the best place to send for these certificates? Also if anyone is researching this line I'd be happy to share information. Charlotte YOUNG was born abt 1824 in Hector, Schuyler, N.Y. In abt 1833 her father John mother Theadocia and 4 other sisters moved to Kirtland, Lake, Ohio. Charlotte is listed in the 1840 Lake County census. In 1847 the family then makes the move to Nauvoo and eventually Salt Lake City. I believe that Charlotte and Eli ROBINSON were in Bloomfield, Walworth WI because Delos married his first wife there and there is an Eli ROBINSON in the 1860 census. I am searching for more on Charlotte such as POD. Thanks, Cindy

    3. Thank you so much Joanie. I would certainly appreciate it if you could get the obituary for me. I will be happy to pay any costs involved. This has been a large brickwall for me. 1. ROBINSON Delos and ROWE Celestia LaSalle Ill 1856-1914

    3. This is my first posting to LaSalle Ill. Thanks, Cindy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Small Business - Try our new resources site!

    3. I am searching for an obituary for Catherine Westfall Penny, b. 17 Jan 1830, prob Miami Co. Ohio, d. 12 Jun 1902, Cornell, Illinois. She is buried in Phillips Cemetery. I would appreciate any information regarding Catherine and will reimburse costs. I would love a picture of her tombstone if this is possible. I would also like to find her husband, John and if he is buried there. He was b. 12 Oct 1818 in Kentucky, d. 8 Feb. 1889 according to a letter I have, however I found him on a 1910 Census in Streator, Illinois. John is on the Illinois Death Index but Catherine is not. It is said they lived in Osborne, Kansas for a time but I haven't been able to verify this. Thank you, Janice Buker

    3. Linda-- Evans Township in Marshall County butts up against Osage township in LaSalle County: see http://www2.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/irad/township_maps/lasalle_ map.html and http://www2.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/irad/township_maps/marshall _map.html. There is a close association between the two townships. You'll see this at one of Nancy Piper's pages--including the fact that Evans Township was once part of LaSalle County--at http://www.piperspages.com/Marshall/EvansTwp.html. I think you're on the right track. Best wishes, Tim -----Original Message----- From: Linda Ziemann [mailto:lin.ziemann@verizon.net] Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 7:09 PM To: ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [ILLASALLE] Prairie Eden, Illinois ?? This is to Tim and the rest of you from the LaSalle list. I appreciate the direction and believe I will contact this lady that Tim suggests. On another Illinois list I got the response to check out this url. I was told, "According to this site, Wenona Station, Illinois was referred to by some as, Prairie Eden." http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/spec-coll/MSC/ToMsc450/MsC419/MsC419.htm Below is the paragraph that references Prairie Eden. Does this sound right? I think it does. The family I am searching was in Marshall and LaSalle Counties. Here is that paragraph from the above url: "Originally from Pennsylvania, both the families of Tillie Wise and Sam Clark moved west. Most of the Wise family settled around Wenona Station, Illinois, which they fondly referred to as Prairie Eden." I will move forward and perhaps I can find the grave of this little boy, Walter Gilcrest. Family story has it that an older child was pushing the child Walter in a baby buggy of some sort....pushing too fast, hit a bump and baby Walter went flying out of the buggy to his death. Very sad! THANKS AGAIN TO ALL. Linda Z.

Hi, Linda-- I looked at the 1870 Marshall County entry and also found Robert Gilcrest in Eureka (Woodford County) in 1900 (born in Ohio, like William). I don't see any Gilcrests in LaSalle County. What I would suggest would be to contact Nancy Piper, who maintains a Marshall-Putnam County website at http://www.piperspages.com/Marshall/IndexPage.html#Genealogical. Nancy is very friendly and knows a lot about the whole area. I think she's transcribing and making available online a History of Marshall County. I searched for Gilcrest in the Henry Republican obits prior to 1870--nothing there--but it's possible that Eden Prairie was a town or a township in Marshall County at one time and its name was changed later. (That's just a guess.) Following up on an obituary in the Streator Times-Press for one of my great-great-uncles, which stated he was born in "Long Ridge, Illinois," I sent a query to the Peoria Rootsweb list and found that there was a town called "Long Ridge" in Peoria County at the time of his birth, but it was accidentally changed to "Lawn Ridge" when the town applied for a post office from the federal govt and it came back with a permit for that name. If you haven't already tried it, you might post a query to the Marshall County list. Good luck! Tim P.S. My g-grandpa Henry Hoffner lived in Monona County around the turn of the century. Two sons were born there, one survived, then their farm was flooded and the farmhouse still lies at the bottom of the Missouri River. -----Original Message----- From: Linda Ziemann [mailto:lin.ziemann@verizon.net] Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 4:11 PM To: ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILLASALLE] Prairie Eden, Illinois ?? I have been doing Illinois research for some time. Today I opened a small 3 inch by 2 inch (very old) shadow box picture frame. I hesitated to open this because it contains a lock of hair from a child that I believe was born after 1866 and died before 1870. There is also a poem.."My Boy", with a few small pieces of his clothing. I decided to open this on the hope that perhaps something was written on the back of the small paper that had the poem on it. To my amazement..there was something written in pencil on the inside of the frame itself. Some of it is not yet readable...I hope to magnify it enough to decipher it later. Part of it says.. Aged 18 ... (I am guessing the word "months" is what is next.) On the 8th of August Prairie Eden, Illinois Now my question. Where might I find this Prairie Eden, Illinois? The couple who had this child were: William S. Gilcrest and Mary Ann Ewin...married in Marshall County, IL..1866. This child is said to be their son, Walter, who died in an accident before the census of 1870. This couple and their infant son, Laurence, is enumerated on the 1870, Marshall County, Bennington twp. Other members of their family lived in LaSalle County at that time. A granddaughter of this Mother tells me that the Mother of this child kept this little frame with the lock of hair under her pillow and slept with it there the rest of her life after this infant's death. The poem is precious..it reads: My Boy.---- A lock of golden hair, Tied with silken thread; A tiny shoelet lying there; A snow-white curtained bed. A little broken toy; A book all soiled and torn; A jaunty velvet cap my boy Has often, often worn - Alas, are all that's left! (Such is the Father's will.) His joyous laughter sounds no more. His little heart is still. THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP ANYONE CAN GIVE ME ABOUT PRAIRIE EDEN, IL. Linda Ziemann ============================== Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree.
