    3. > The Soundex was not done for military purposes, it was done when Social > Security was established to provide a possible base for claimants. The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) in Fort Wayne, IN (2nd Genealogy Library in the nation) will tell any patron that the reason for the 1880 soundex was so that the government could see households of children under the age of 10, info to be used in case of a military draft being needed. Curious to know - if it was used from 1894-1896 to whenever for the Spanish-American War. In my opion: It seems to me the handwriting on the 1880 census in some places corresponds with the soundex handwriting, as if some census taker filled out the soundex at the same time or at a later date before returning the info to the bureau or the supervisor. In other places, the handwriting at least looks like it was done in a similar handwriting style to that time period as opposed to 40-50 years later. Then the paper and ink would look different on the page, as wele as the age of the paper. The 1890 census was first being filmed in 1921 when the fire broke out; it's hard to say whether the 1880 should hopefully already have been completed or not---; hence no possible claim to be being soundexed for Social Security purposes unless the government had such forthought, which I doubt. 1. [ILLASALL-L] Davis & Indian Creek massacre
    2. Cheryl -- I have Rachel & Sylvia Hall's account of the May 1832 murder of the settlers on Indian Creek in a text file, which I would be happy to send you (just email me personally; its pretty long to put on the list). Rachel & Sylvia were the two daughters who were kidnapped for about a week and a half and ransomed back from the Winnebago tribe (who were neutral) in southern Wisconsin. I'm descended from Rachel Hall. Sorry I can't help you out with Davis' parents. There is a monument in Freedom Twp. in a small park called Shabbona Park (in LaSalle Co. near Harding, IL) where the victims of the attack were buried in a mass grave. The incident was part of the Black Hawk War, and is mentioned in many history books on that topic. Depending on the book, you get very different views of the whole thing. Many of the accounts written in the 19th c. are published in different county history books (like in the various LaSalle Co. histories). Basically, a few local Pottawatomi Indians who had a grudge against Davis (one had been beaten by him for taking apart a dam that the settlers built which was hurting fishing at the Indian village) took advantage of the unrest going on and with a group of maurading Sauk & Fox Indians attacked the Indian Creek settlement. The Davis & Hall families had been warned twice by Shabbona (a friendly chief from the Pottawatomi village) but as nothing happened the first time, thought they would take their chances at defending themselves at their cabins. When the attack finally came, many of the men were out in the fields planting and a few of them were able to escape. The massacre fueled an absolute frenzy of fear in Ottawa and in settlements all over Illinois, and hundreds of ill-equipped volunteer militia were rapidly formed (you can read more about these groups in books on the Black Hawk war). Rachel & Sylvia became celebrities after their rescue, and the state of IL gave them some land. Rachel's husband supposedly read about this in a newspaper in IN and hurried over to marry her -- all the records seem to show she was only 15 at this point! Anyway, let me know if you (or anyone else) wants the text file mentioned above --Sandy Dunavan << I thought this would be of interest to someone besides me, William Davis is my gr.-gr.-gr.-grandfather. I am also interested in finding out more about this Indian attack and the names of Williams parents. >>

Cheryl Latto William Davis born April 13, 1815 in W.V.,came to this state in 1824, to Vermillion Co., then to La Salle; lived on Indian Creek, six miles from Ottawa, in 1832, where his father was building a mill at the commencement of the Indian War; all of the neighbors had gone to Ottawa, expect the two families of Hall and Pettigrew, who where at his father's cabin when they were attacked by the Indians; his father, his mother, two brothers and two sisters were killed, together with Mr.. and Mrs.. Hall and one daughter; two daughters of Mr.. Hall were taken prisoners; Mr.. Davis and his brother Stephen escaped, William moved to Carroll Co, in Feb 1841.

    3. Yes, the Soundex only included families with children 10 and under. But check anyway--I found my grandfather and his family on it with him listed as 9 when he actually was 11. Maybe an older sibling gave the info -- who knows. But I never would have found them three counties away from where they were supposed to be if not for the Soundex. The Soundex was not done for military purposes, it was done when Social Security was established to provide a possible base for claimants. -----Original Message----- From: Jude Richardson <lrich@sound.net> To: ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com <ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, November 06, 1998 4:07 AM Subject: Re: [ILLASALL-L] 1880 La Salle Co Census >Please note that the 1880 Soundex is not a complete index of the 1880 Census. >The Soundex included only households with children 10 & under.
