My grandfather Peter William Didtel, his brother John Dittle, arrived in the US approx. 1872. Am trying to find information on their parents, father Joseph Dittle or Didtel, mother Theresa Meister both born in Germany. Trying to find out where they came from in Germany and am assuming they came to the US with their children since John was only 5 or 6 when they arrived. Peter born 1869 probably in Germany although some indication might have been Pittsburgh, PA. Married Mary Stoetzer 1892 Peru, IL. Married Augusta Ritzmann 1896 Peru, IL. Moved to Roseburg, OR sometime after 1900. John Dittle born 1867 in Germany, Married Louise De Costa 1886 Spring Valley, IL. Married Francis Wortz after 1901. Died 1924 in Oglesby, IL Thank You, Stuart Didtel sdid@pioneer.net South Beach, OR
Thank you for replying about my Studebaker inquiry. It has been easy to track down the sons of Arthur Chamberlin, my gg grandfather, but difficult to find information about the daughters after they married. Sarah Chamberlin (dau. of Arthur and Eliza Horn Chamberlin from Tonica) married a ------Studebaker. Sarah b. Nov 9, 1838 died Mar. 15, 1887. In "The Tonica News" I found the following Studebaker information - don't know if it is from my Chamberlin - Studebaker family. Blanche Studebaker married a Mercer Richey. (date of marriage?) In "The Tonica News", 12/20/96 issue, it states that a Jerry Studebaker of Farm Ridge had died at age eighty on Dec. 19, 1916. Icy Studebaker of Lowell married Will Gregory Feb. 18, 1896. Three year old daughter of Reuben Studebaker of Deer Park, died Dec 21, 1917 - diphtheria. Recently I spoke to someone by phone who is related to the Studebakers and he told me of a Studebaker cemetery and thinks Sarah Chamberlin Studebaker may be buried there. So maybe I am making progress. Thank you again for your information. Linda Stahl
Bonnie - thanks for all the info. A fellow list user notified my that I could look up at the FHC on microfiche the St. John the Baptist cemetery records. I made it to the center tonight and did not find any family names. To your knowledge are there any other cemeteries in the Northville/Somonauk area that would have lists of grave sites? I appreciate all you help! Barb
Barb, Here is the Introduction page to the cemetery records for this church. If you need a look up I'll need more info. INTRODUCTION Saint John th Baptist Catholic Church cemetery is located along Hoxsey road, one mile south of the Village of Somonauk, Illinois, in Section 5 of Northville Township, LaSalle County. This tract of land consists of 4.8 acres more or less. The earliest record of a land transfer for the purpose of establishing a church burial ground appears in the LaSalle County Courthouse records of 1854. Two parcels were deeded to the Trustees of a Catholic Religious Society on March 6th of that year. One acre donated by Louis Ulrich and one-half acre donated by Concorde Hisler Mourlam. Later acquisitions were made by the cemetery in 1896(1.06 acre), 1935(1,06 acre), and 1967(1.05 acre). There is additional information explaining about the inscriptions and how they are arranged in the book so what is above is only the first half of the introduction. If you want me to look up someone for you, let me know. From: PAST AND PRESENT OF DEKALB COUNTY, ILLINOIS By Prof. Lewis M. Gross Volume 1 Chicago: The Pioneer Publishing Company 1907 Page 162/163 .......A Catholic society was organized in the later '50s by a priest from Naperville, who held services in private houses or in the hotel of the village, where the Catholics would assemble to do their daily duty, have their children baptized and receive the sacrament of the church. In 1863 they purchased a hall and in 1866 built a frame church forty by eighty. This building was destroyed by fire in 1868. this was replaced by a building of brick of the same dimensions, and at a later period an addition was built to the church. Rev. C.J. Huth was the first resident priest of Somonauk, and remained there for sixteen years. Father Huth was popular not only with the members of his congregation, but with the whole community, and when he was transferred from this appointment the Protestants had a public meeting and made him a valuable present. ............... -----Original Message----- From: BJS4179@aol.com [SMTP:BJS4179@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, May 13, 1999 8:20 AM To: ILLASALL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILLASALL-L] Re: ILLASALL-D Digest V99 #72 Bonnie - I am looking for the catholic church called "St. John the Baptist" located in Somonauk. Downtown Courthouse, Madison & Columbus St., Ottawa. I contacted the courthouse and they said they do not have them (naturalization records). Someone from the Guild said they have the naturalization records(I am looking for the 1st papers) on film but I do not know if I should write the guild a letter or if they have a email address to do a lookup since I am unable to go to Ottawa? I am a brick wall. would like to know the date of arrival from Austria, as I have the year 1893. Any ideas or suggestions? Arlene crowfoa@aol.com
The 1850 Census of La Salle County, Bruce Township, shows the household of Hough JEFFREY and wife Caroline. Also living in the Household is Sarah READY and two children, Benjamin and Leah READY. I believe that Sarah (DAY) READY is the widow of Daniel READY (d. March 29, 1850 in LaSalle Co), both from Brown County, OH. I suspect that Caroline JEFFREY (b. abt 1828) may be a daughter of Daniel and Sarah Ready but so far have not been able to find a marriage record or any indication of Caroline's maiden name. Does anyone have any information on the parents of Caroline JEFFREY, wife of Hough/ Hugh JEFFREY? Known children of Daniel and Sarah (Day) Ready: Jesse Ready b. abt 1836 OH Daniel Ready b. abt 1837 OH Benjamin Ready b. abt 1838 OH Leah Ready b. abt 1840 OH I would like to correspond with anyone connected to this READY family. In the 1930's and 40's my parents and grandparents were friends with some PEARSONS who lived on a farm north of Mendota. I believe his name was NELS PEARSON or something close to that. I'll be in Mendota in August and can check cemetary records and newspaper files for you if you have something specific I can look up for you. Rose

My ancestor Henry Thomas PEARSON moved from Ohio to La Salle County about 1844 or 1845. He apparently settled in Mendota. He and his wife Delilah had 8 children (Michael, Sarah, Angelina, Evander, Ellen, James, Dell Raye, Lewis Ulysses Grant) all of whom were born in the county. Looking for any information available. Thank you. Becky
