    1. [ILLASALL-L] Marriage License dates
    2. Hi I have a marriage license from Fulton Co from 1879 that has parents names for both bride and groom filled in. I realize that is not LaSalle, but I imagine that these documents may be state mandated and would all change around the same time. Hope this helps to narrow down the date of the switch. Debbie

    3. There could be a connection as I know that the HILLIER/PRICE family was connected somehow to the WOLF(E) family. In 1947 a Williams descendant visited Streator - a woman she called "Aunt Lizzy" Hillier. At the time the lady was introduced to a Mrs. Wolf(e) by this Aunt Lizzy. There was some familiar relationship bet. the two families. Also, my grt-grandmother Sarah Withington Nelson left a scrap of paper on which was written a note by an Annie WOLF(E) (1882 or so) telling my grt-grandmother about the diptheria outbreak in the Cumberland area. Were the WOLF(E)S' ever in or passing through Allegany Co., MD? 3. Hello Bob & Melinda, I used to live in Springfield and that is where I got started doing family history. The Illinois State Archives has all U.S. Census and their indexes for the state of Illinois. You would not be limited to searching just LaSalle Co. there. They also have a number of county histories on their shelves, in addition to death indexes and records for the whole state, WWI draft registrations, and marriage records for many counties. The Archives building is on the south side of the capitol building. Also in downtown Springfield, located below the Old State Capitol building, is the Illinois State Historical Library. They also have many county histories and general reference works, as well as microfilm of most newspapers printed in Illinois. This is a wonderful source for finding obituaries after you have located death dates. Both of these facilities are open at least 5 days a week, but you should contact them to check their hours. You can reach the State Archives at 217 782-4682 and the Historical Library at 217 782-4836. Good luck! Lynn ---------- >From: "Robert H. 3. Looking for JONES family members who may still be in the Streator, Lasalle Co., IL area. Believe "Uncle Jimmy" Jones was in Streator prior to 1890. He was a coal miner and entrepreneur. He returned to "old haunts" in Allegany Co., MD abt 1895 to purchased and charter a silver/lead mining operation in Hmapshire Co., WV. Shareholders were persons named Hillier and Price with family in Lasalle Co., a Daniel Williams in Ocean Mines, MD and a Charles W. Busch of NY state. Know that the Hillier, Price and Busch families are inter-related. Daniel Williams was originally from Wales as may have been the Hilliers. Would like to connect these people with two other families from the Streator area - NELSON and WOLF(E). James W. Nelson, of Streator, IL, was overseer of the mining operation for this newly formed WV Mining Co. Help! TIA, Karen Nelson Hangsleben

    3. We are planning a trip from Minnesota to Virginia. Along the way, we would like to stop in Illinois to research and attempt to locate our STROCK/STRACK family members who arrived from Germany and where living in La Salle county between 1879 and 1887. Specifically we were interested in researching the 1880 census (also open for suggestions). The question I have for this group. Because our time is limited, we will only have one full day to conduct this research, and we would like to ask for your opinion (assistance) where it would be most beneficial for us to utilize our time? We are not familiar with the available resources in Illinois. The options we came up with were, 1.) La Salle County; 2). State archieve or a Historical (History) Center in Springfield; 3). or perhaps a resource center in Chicago (least preferred). Any suggestions and assistance will be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi Peggy, If you're asking about civil records, rather than church records, it looks like it was after 1900 that marriage records asked for names of parents, age, birthplace, place of residence, occupation and names of witnesses. Even then, they were not always filled in. In any case, this information was included in a document called "Illinois State Board of Health Return of a Marriage to County Clerk". It was filed with the actual marriage license and marriage affidavit. If you don't live near Ottawa, you can view the civil marriage records, and indexes to them, on LDS film. The years 1831-1916 are available. 3. Hi Peggy, I have a marriage license from 1864 which contains no info on the parents. I was lucky that they got married at a church that the La Salle Co. Genealogy Guild had copies of the parish registry. My family's next marriage in La Salle Co. was in 1886 which did have family info. 3. Hi Will, As a visitor myself to FHC, there is no such thing as an idiot. The staff is willing and ready to help all who come to do genealogy. There is microfilm and fisch plus books and computers for looking in a multitude of IGI and Vital Statistic CD's. They have information that you can not believe! Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours your first trip to FHC. Make sure you scope out a volunteer to help start you on your research. Most have census and soundex information for your local area. I have been waiting here in Oregon for 5 weeks for a Chicago Census!!! You are lucky to live where you are searching. We have bunches for Oregon. 3. IRAD at NIU in DeKalb has Probate Administrator's Records, Appraisement Records, Guardian's Records, Inventory Records, Probate Records, and Will Records, all for 1862. They charge only for copies made. If you want to search for yourself, LDS has film for LaSalle Co. Probate Minutes. 1862 would be on Film #1428679. Those minutes then refer to the other types of records (inventory, will, etc.) as necessary. LDS also has many of those records on film. If you live anywhere near a Family History Center, the search-it-yourself method is more rewarding! If they know someone is in town they will try to have someone there to open for you on other days. They have been more than helpful to me. Their phone is (815) 433-5261 and you can also email them and Don will get back with you.

    2. Sharon, Thanks for the info. I took a drive to Ottawa today (7-7), visited the LaSalle Co. Genealogy Guild twice between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm. Unfortunately it was closed. Additional travels around town (including Peru and LaSalle) to Court Houses, the cemetery, and a couple of libraries were fruitless. Well, not completely. I did buy some bananas at Econo Foods. I will write an old fashioned letter to the Guild. If anything comes up please let me know. Mary and her man, Michael Dooley, are a real evasive search. I DO know this. They were living in Peru in 1862 when their son was born. Michael moved to Canton some time after she died in 1900. He died in 1902. Again thanks. John Dooley
