    1. [ILLASALLE] 1883 Tonica -- Who are these Roberts?
    2. Lisa L. Jones
    3. Greetings, My gr-gr-grandmother, Julia Roberts was born in Plattsburgh NY, 20 Feb 1824. She married first George W. Tilton, and second, Fairfax Smith Thayer. She died 27 Sept 1909 in Scio, Linn Co., OR. I have conflicting information about her parents and have as yet been unable to trace them. Julia kept a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, and amongst them was the following article regarding the wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. P. J. Roberts. I do not know the relationship of this Roberts family to my Julia, but I suspect this could be a nephew of hers. Does any one have any information about the Roberts of this article? How about any of the other names listed? I would enjoy hearing from anyone with clues about the identities of these folks. Regards, Lisa L. Jones mailto:[email protected] [Newspaper clipping from Julia's scrapbook.] TONICA, LA SALLE COUNTY, ILLINOIS SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1883 Fifteen Years of Married Life Mr. And Mrs. P. J. Roberts, having worked well together under the marital yoke for fifteen years, concluded to celebrate their crystal anniversary last Wednesday evening. And being of a social disposition, they invited something like a hundred of their friends and neighbors to call in, make merry, and join in a fest of good things generally. Although not all who were bidden to come could respond in person, the company was large enough to fill the spacious mansion to the utmost limit of comfort. While the high tide of sociability was murmuring in every corner, the noise of the merry-making was suddenly drowned by the sound of music without. On opening the door, there stood the cornet band, in full uniform, with blazing torches, performing some of their choicest selections.--After listening to this charming change of program for a few minutes, Mr. Roberts invited the boys to come in and enjoy themselves with the rest. They did so. At the proper hour came the feast. And such a feast as was served would do credit to a Washington reception. The guests (54 in all) were seated at tables, and the tables were spread with all that the appetite of man could desire. Oysters, meats, cake, fruits, confectioneries, coffee, and trimmings were in sight, all of the most delicious kind and cookery, and fair waiters were in attendance to see that none should be idle for the want of anything not within reach. In brief, the banquet was a lavish affair, in keeping with the generous hospitality of the provider. Following is the list of presents: Tonica. Tea set and water set--Jas. Richey, Dr. Black, R. Bullock, S. Underhill, W. S. Gardner, M. P. Scott, G. A. McFerson, Platt Ford. Celery glass--Jos. Elliott. Jell dish--O. H. Barrass. Bouquet holder--Mr. & Mrs. J. P. Miner Jelly dish--Mrs. Tillie C. Perry. Pair vases--G. G. Pratt Bottle perfumery--Mrs. & Mrs. E. G. Thompson Set sauce dishes--Mr. &Mrs. Archie Neil Fruit dish--Mr. & Mrs. J. S. Underhill Bread plate--Mr. & Mrs. E. Stone Lamp--Mr. & Mrs. N. Richey. Silver Dollar--Mr. Holdridge. Glass set--Mr. & Mrs. J. W. Richardson La Salle. Fruit dish--M. Byrne. Bread plate--Mrs. Geo. Morrison Cake stand--Mr. & Mrs. N. J. Weller Bread plate and sauce dishes--Mrs. Tamblyn. Jell dish--Mr. & Mrs. McIntosh. Pickle dish--Mr. & Mrs. Boutwell Set goblets and sauce dishes--Mr. & Mrs. J. V. Couglin Sauce dishes--R.K.Coulter Fruit dish and sauce dish--Mr. & Mrs. Murley Fruit dish and bread plate--Mr. & Mrs. Heath Fruit dish--Mrs. Roberts. Rutland. Bread plate--Mr. & Mrs. Kelly. Celery dish--Mr. & Mrs. Horner Pickle dish--Mrs. Roher. Many of these presents were of the most elegant and costly description. [End of article]

    1. [ILLASALLE] Early Mail
    2. ...from a sketch of Martin A. Newman, a Livingston and La Salle Co. pioneer, published in 1909. ..."After getting through with that job, he carried the mail between Ottawa and Bloomington, by the way of where Streator now stands (Eagle postoffice, Isaac Painter postmaster), and from there to the head of Mud Creek to Billy K. Brown's, and thence to Philip Rollins' place, where they had a store or two--Pontiac was not then on the map--and from there to Avoca and Indian Grove, then to Lexington and then on to Bloomington. He would leave Ottawa Monday morning and get back Saturday night. There was not a bridge over any stream on the route; he had to swim the streams when they were high, in winter as well as summer; and the compenstion for all this was about one dollar a day.

    2. Joanie, Thanks for checking. I also checked at the Streator Library last summer and couldn't find a thing either, but I thought it was just my "rookie" research methods. What would you suggest from here? There has to be an obituary somewhere. Maybe I have the wrong year perhaps, but that is what I believe I saw on his gravestone in Long Point. Any suggestions? Thanks, Marguerite

    3. Tedd, Thank you. Probably not. My Pattersons would bear the name of Bean or something else. My Pearl Patterson married a Bean. They had two daughters (I believe) who would have married and had other names. I'd love to find some living relation through that line. Pearl was my grandfather's beloved sister. We've made so many wonderful discoveries in cousins. It would be nice to find some in that branch too. And we have some nice finding we'd love to share. 1. [ILLASALLE] Re: John Rice
    2. Hi Joanie, Could I ask you to look up another Rice obituary? John Rice died on Jan. 15, 1946 in Streator. I believe he is the eldest son of David Rice and that Minnie Rice was his stepmother. In her obituary, it mentioned two grandchildren, a grandson Opal Rice and a girl Pearl Rice. If these children are not John's, then they must be David and Nellie McGrath Rice's children, as Minnie's obit said that after his mother's death about four years prior, Opal went to live with Minnie. Thanks for any help. Joy

    1. [ILLASALLE] Jos. Sherrer
    2. Joan
    3. Greetings from Streator, Jos. Sherrer Had Enviable Record For Faithful Service. Joseph Sherrer of Chicago, who died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Julius Redman of Ransom, was buried in Northfield. Joseph Sherrer was born at Lyons, France, January 18, 1836, and departed this life at Ransom, Ill., November 7, 1920, at the age of 84 years 9 months and 21 days. At the age of 19 he came to America, and made his home at North Northfield, Cook county, Ill., where he was married in the years of 1857 to Marie Kamper. This union was a happy one and was blessed with five children---three sons and two daughters, all of whom survived the father. In 1856 he joined the Evangelical church and proved to be a true christian and a faithful member unto his end. In the year 185? he moved to Chicago with his family, where he lived in the same house from that time until 1913 when his dear companion departed this life. April 7, 1907, they had the rare privilege to celebrate their golden wedding. The old settlers union of Chicago at their picnic in the year 1910, awarded him with a solid gold medal for having worked a longer time continuously for one firm--the John Phillips Chair company---than any man in Chicago. The last four years he made his home in the Redman family at Ransom, Mrs. Redman being his wife's sister. He was highly esteemed by the people who knew him. After an illness of a few weeks he fell asleep in the same faith which guided his life. He leaves his five children, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, and many relatives and friends who mourn his departure. Funeral services were conducted from the Evangelical church by Rev. J. Wellner. The remains were taken to North Northfield. Joanie
