Hello, My FENIMORE relatives lived in Peru from about 1865-1880 according to CW Pension file papers I have. Henry V. FENIMORE married Sarah Theresa MACKIN in NJ where all of their children were born. Two of their children and a grandchild died while they lived in Peru. I would like to find the burial places and possibly an obituary. Walter P. FENIMORE died November 18, 1872 aged 13 Jeannette A. (FENIMORE) GRAY died November 29, 1872 aged 20 Jeannette Fenimore GRAY infant daughter of Peter GRAY and Jeanette FENIMORE died June 13, 1873 (born Nov 25 1872) Will the Peru Library copy obits for a fee? I do have exact death dates. What cemeteries were in use from the period of 1872-77 in Peru? Thanks very much for any suggestions for further research. This is one of the nicest lists I subscribe too! Kathy Karn
Hi----My cousin, who has lived in Mendota all of her life, tells me that,at one time, there were 2 Catholic churches in Mendota, Ill-----St.Joseph's (which was mostly for the German population) and St. Mary's (which had mostly Irish people) It was changed many years ago to have only 1 Catholic Church, called Holy Cross. I think that Holy Cross was built in the late 1930s or early 1940s. She said that there is a book on the history of Holy Cross that covers this. It would be necessary to contact Holy Cross to get a copy of this. They are located at 1010 Jefferson St.in Mendota, Illinois 61342 Tel # (815)538-6151 Dick Corrigan Orland Park, Ill [email protected]
I am looking for any information or resources on the McDonell and Brennan lines. Allen McDonell was my ggg-grandfather. He lived in Osage Township from 1864 until his death in 1876. He has a brief bio in the "History of LaSalle County, Illinois" published in 1886 in Chicago. According to the book, he "improved a valuable farm", Osage Township, near Wenona, sections 10, 11, and 23. He married Mary Taylor, they had 6 children Donald, Duncan, Sarah, Ronald (sp?), John, and Agnes. Ronald married Mary Brennan in Illinois. They had children, Allen Jr, Austin (sp?), Irvin, and Bessie. Allen and Austin (b. 1885) were born in Illinois. The other children were likely born in Antelope County, Nebraska. If anyone would like to know more of what I've found or knows how I could research this further, please contact me. Thanks, Amy Reaney Portland, Oregon
Greetings from Streator, I checked the obituary list from 1924-1932 and found the following: August 22, 1924, Daughter of Ed Gretencord, infant, Ottawa, buried in St. Columba. March 20, 1925 Joseph C. Gretencord, aged 60, residing in Ottawa, September 25, 1931, page 5,(Streator paper) Mrs. E. Gretencord, Ottawa, buried in Summit View Ellen = Nellie? Probably her. The folks at the Guild would probably have her obituary since she was listed as living in Ottawa. January 27 & 29, 1932, Henry Gretencord, Ottawa, aged 78, buried in St. Francis. Joanie

Greetings from Streator, I left your e-mail at the museum. Perhaps some of the other board members will have an answer for you. Greetings from Streator, I checked the photo file, did note find a Kimes picture on the list. There was an article about the Kimes School. M. Kimes sold the 5 acres of land to the school for $25,000. A low price considering the new homes/subdivision that were going up in the area at the time. I think there might be a photo of her with the article. Our pictures are not sorted by photographer, so I don't know if we have any taken by Jameson. Thank you very much, jaw, for your reply to my question. I had looked at the Illinois death index and couldn't find Nellie. That is why I was wondering if there was a newspaper obit index, in case she died out of state. She was a life long resident of LaSalle County and married into two local families, the Rices and the Gretencords. Perhaps Grand Ridge had its own newspaper at that time, but if so, I don't know what it could be. I have found though, that if other LaSalle papers carried stories which concerned people who had lived around Streator, the Streator newspaper would usually catch and report it. Does the Streator paper have an index which would have the years 1927 and 1928? Thanks again - Joy

Thank you Lana: I'm afraid the link didn't work, but I did find the list of churches I think you meant. I found out that St. Joseph's has been Holy Cross for a long time. Could Soxtant possibly be Lostant, IL. I always thought John was born in LaSalle Co., and lived in Christian Co., but the marriage license says he was born in "Soxtant, Ill" . I checked the GNIS locator but there was no listing. Hi, Does anyone have information on the family of Charlie Redeen, he resided in Ottawa in the 1930's. His sister is my great grandmother and she died in Rock Island in 1927. The information that I have on this family is limited, as I live in Ohio. I belive that the family is originally from Rock Island, and that my great grandmother's siblings may have spread out across Illionis. If you have any information on this family, or any tips on how to find more information on this family please let me know. Thanks, Zack Pasters

Macon is just South of Decatur, Illinois in MACON COUNTY. The map that I have does not show the road that it is on, but I would assume that it is on US51, since I think that I-39 does not go further South than Decatur Dick Corrigan Orland Park, Ill
Hello, Lostant is just right outside of Peru, & Oglesby, Ill. > Good Afternoon, > How about Lostant? >
Hi Joan, Where might I look to find info on a building in Streator with the name ROAK , engraved across the front . Had a distant relative ROAK , tell of seeing such a building there some years ago while looking for her ROAK family , who lived in that area . . I am new to the List and looking for help to find St. Josephs Catholic Church in Mendota or in a town very closeby. I am seeking to trace my gggrandmother's Bambeck family. According to information I've received, two daughters of Veronica Bambeck Rosenberg Hiermeier (perhaps my ggrandmothers sister) became nuns at Joliet's convent of St.Francis of the Immaculate Conception. Mary Ann Rosenberger final vows 3 Sep 1866 and took the name Sister Mary Angela. Her 1/2 sister Anna Veronica Heirmeier took her final vows 12 July 1874 and took the name Sister Eusebia. Convent records indicate their home parish was St. Joseph's/Mendota. I have found the family of Martin Hiermeier in the 1870 Census/Mendotta. I am unable to find a St. Joseph's today in Mendota and wonder if the church is in a town very close by. Thank you. Janet Pierson Evertsen
Sorry about that, but my map did not have Lostant indexed , but it was listed and I did not see it. Sorry again about that . Some words are missread and other mispronounced.
