    3. Yes, the monument is still there. The County maintains it - it is called Shabbona Park. The top of the monument held an angel that was stolen many years ago and was replaced to long ago I believe. Last trip to the Co. Historicial museum in Utica the clothing was still on display. Margaret

    2. There are 2 monuments, located on the former farm of William Davis, now a county park called Shabonna Park. It's located just north of the village of Harding. One monument honors Shabonna, the Indian who warned the settlers. The second monument was erected by William Munson, who married Rachel Hall. It commemorates those killed by the Indian raid. What is purported to be the old millstone sets nearby. These monuments are a stone's throw from Indian Creek. My ancestor was Temperance Hall, oldest child of William and Mary Jane Rebecca (Williams) Hall. Temperance was already married and not living with the Hall's at the time of the massacre. Here's some more... From the "History of LaSalle County," published 1877 regarding a brief history of Freedom Township, where the William Hall farmstead is located. pp. 394-397 "The town of Freedom embraces the surveyed Township 35 N., of R. 3 East, and is mostly prairie. Indian creek passes, in a southeast direction, across the northeast corner of the town. On the banks of the creek are about two and one-half sections of timber, which was originally of excellent quality, and was the attraction that induced the settlement. The settlement commenced in 1830, and was broken up by the Indians, in the Black Hawk war of 1832. After the war, the surviving settlers returned, and others came in, and, as a part of Indian Precinct, and later, as the town of Freedom, it has been a prominent and prosperous section of the county. The sad story of the massacre of three families of its pioneers, gives a melancholy interest to its history, and to the locality where it occurred. Each succeeding generation, with bated breath, will listen to the recital, till the banks of Indian creek will become historic ground through all the future. "William Munson has recently erected a fine marble monument at the grave, where the fifteen victims were buried. It is in view of the public road, leading from Freedom to Earl, on the northeast side of the creek, and as the white column meets the view, the traveler will instinctively heave a sigh of sympathy for the tragic fate of the first pioneers. "William Hall, born in Georgia, was married to Mary J. R. Wilburs, [s/b Williams] in Kentucky; moved to Illinois; from there to near Springfield, Illinois, in 1825; made a farm at Mackinaw, and then went to the lead mines, near Galena; followed mining three years, then moved to Bureau Creek, and to near Lamoille, Bureau County. In the spring of 1832, sold his claim to Aaron Gunn, and moved to Indian Creek, where he, with his wife, and one child, were killed by Indians, May 20, 1832. His oldest daughter, Temperance, married Peter Cartwright, nephew of Dr. Cartwright. For the others, see narrative of the massacre. "Mr. Davis, from Kentucky; settled on Indian creek, S. W. 1/4 S. 2, in 1830-the first in that region. His wife was daughter of John Hays, the first settler at Peru-they, with five children, were killed at the massacre. Their three oldest sons escaped. "William Petigrew, from Kentucky, wife and two children, were stopping with Davis at the time of the massacre, and all were killed. Mr. Petigrew came to Bailey's Grove at an early day, and was then single; he is said to have married a widow, with two children, and these constituted his family when he went to Holderman' s Grove, and from thereto Indian Creek, in 1832, where he proposed to settle. "John H. Henderson, and wife, Elizabeth Powell, came from Tennessee in 1830, he located on Section 11. He was in the field on the south side of Indian creek, planting corn, when the massacre took place by the Sauk Indians, May 20, 1832; he, with others, escaped to Ottawa. He was an active, enterprising citizen, and a leading abolitionist. He died June 17, 1848, much regretted. His widow still survives, living with her children. Her children are: Mary, married A. P. Devereaux, of Freedom; George, in Iowa; Frances, married Richard Scott, in California; Martha, married James Clark, of Sycamore; Sarah, married George Martin; Erastus T., married Miss Norton; Annetta, married Charles Martin, of Vermont. "William Munson came from Indiana to Putnam County, and from there here in 1833; he purchased the farm, owned by William Hall at the time he was killed by the Indians, on Section 1. He married Rachel Hall, who was taken away prisoner by the Sauk Indians, May 20, 1832. In 1837 he laid out the town of Munson, which has hardly realized the expectations of its founder. His wife died May 1, 1870. Mr. Munson still occupies the farm where he has spent the most of his life. He has four daughters and three sons : Irena, married Dr. Geo. Vance: Miranda, married Samuel Dunnavan, of Adams; Fidelia, married George Shaver, of Rutland; Phebe, married John Reed, of Ottawa; William, married Delia Shaver; Lewis and Elliott, at home.

    3. Yes, Helen Hagi who married Lester Schultze was the daughter of Frank Hagi. Does it say what kind of business Frank and his father, Jacob, was engaged in? Thanks for the mention of the picture, which includes J. H. Shultz. Is there any mention of his business? -----Original Message----- From: Joan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 14, 2003 7:54 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ILLASALLE] Schultze family - BAKER, HAGI, WILLIAMSON Hi, The Ransom Centennial Book has a large group picture of early 1900's business people. Among the men pictured is J. H. Shultz, but I don't know which one he is. ..from a half page history of the Hagi family ..Frank R. Hagi, son of Jacob, continued with his father's thriving business, and sons, Frank, Jr., and Ival were also Ransom businessmen. Jack has the Hagi Funeral Home in Streator. A daughter, Ruth (Reed) lives in Tennessee, and one daughter, Helen, is deceased. Is this your Helen that married Lester? 3. Sorry, forgot to include information about the book. It is available from local historical societies. Cost is about $20.00 plus shipping. The Streatorland Historical Society has copies for sale. According to Baldwin's, there is supposed to be a monument where the fifteen people were buried. Is that monument still there? Doesn't the Museum at Utica have a display of clothing, vest, hat, etc., worn by the people who died? Don't remember whose clothes they were. Joanie

    3. Hi, Memories of Shaubena, published in 1878 and recently reprinted has information about the massacre. ...In the spring of 1830, William Davis made a claim on Big Indian creek, twelve miles north of Ottawa, and built his cabin close by the creek bank. A few rods from his cabin he built a blacksmith shop, being a blacksmith by trade, doing work for himself and neighbors. He also commenced building a milll, and the dam for that purpose was completed early in the spring of 1832. In the vicinity of Davis' cabin a number of people had located; among these were John and J. H. Henderson, Allen Howard, William Pettigrew, and William Hall, all of whom had families ........................... On Indian Creek, about six miles above Davis' cabin was an Indian village, and its inhabitants were very angry at him for building the dam, as it prevented the fish from ascending the stream, ..... page 153 On the fatal day, about sunrise, before people were out of bed, Shaubena, with his pony in a foam of sweat, reached Davis' cabin, and informed the inmates of their danger. ...On receiving this intelligence Hall was in favor of leaving for Ottawa forthwith, but Davis, being a resolute man, knowing no fear, opposed it, saying he did not fear the Indians, and no red skin could drive him from his home.

Grimes married before? Buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, block 01, Row 28 Thomas J. Grimes d 1950 Hattie M. Fenzel 1870 - 1903 Mary Grimes 1870 - 1929 By the way in 1902-1903 T. 1. RE: [ILLASALLE] Davis Family in 1832 Indian Creek Massacre
    2. Sandy Dunavan
    3. I can't help you many specifics on the Davis family, but I do have a couple of accounts of the massacre from my ancestors' reports - the Halls were neighbors of the Davis family and were at their house on Big Indian Creek when they were killed. A transcript of Rachel & Sylvia Hall's account is on my genealogy website at: http://www.gencircles.com/users/sdunavan/1/data/162 It is under the information on Rachel (my ancestor), you need to scroll way down to see it. There is also a transcript there from a story by John Hope Henderson, a survivor from another family involved. If you want to read yet another account there is one by John Wesley Hall, a brother of Rachel & Sylvia, at: http://www.gencircles.com/users/sdunavan/1/data/171 In John's account he says when they fled to Ottawa immediately after the attack, "we fell in with Mr. Howard and son, three sons of Mr. Davis, and my two brothers, all of whom were in the field referred to except one of Mr. Davis' sons, who was with us in the shop when the alarm was given." He describes William Davis during the attack, and Rachel mentions that Mr. Davis' family consisted of nine in all. His youngest son Jimmie was killed on the trail after the massacre. John Henderson states that all of the Davis family were killed, which doesn't agree with the Hall account, but as his story was told many years later by his nephew, I think it is more likely that John W. Hall's story is right. 3. I saw this name mentioned in one of the messages. I've been trying to find Henry Dugan who married Ellen Duggan and lived in the LaSalle area until the 1880's. Is it possible that Ellen is related to Elizabeth? I can't find the Dugan's (sometimes spelled Duggan) in the census, even though I know my ggrandmother Margaret (daughter of Henry & Ellen) was born in 1868 in LaSalle Co. Obviously the spelling of the two names has complicated matters. [email protected] _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. 2. Joanie, I'll check with my dad and get back to you with anything that I find out. Thanks for all the help you give to so many searchers! Marcia

    2. That's OK! I just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same place. Father Phil was ordained in Peoria in 1901. I know that he was an assistant at IC to Father O'Kelly in October, 1901 because he is so listed in his mother's obit (Elizabeth Duggan Walsh). By 1905, when his father, John Walsh, died, he was IC's pastor. He died in 1970 in Spring Valley and is buried there at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. That parish, which I cannot recall the name of right now, dedicated their parish hall in his name. He was born in 1875 in Eagle township. My dad has all of the hard core details. I can check with him if you would like more info. Just let me know. Marcia
