I've got a history of Freedom Twp., compiled by Evenlyn Goetsch in 1976 for the bicentennial. I remember some local group had a re-enactment of the Indian Creek massacre then - as a 13 yr. old, I got to play the part of Rachel! At any rate, in the book when describing the Davis family, it states: "William Davis, a blacksmith from Kentucky with his wife and eight children was the first settler. His wife was the daughter of John Hays of Tenn., the first settler of Peru. They constructed their cabin on the north bank of the creek and a blacksmith shop a short distance away, no doubt with plans for a sizable settlement. In 1832 they were in the process of building a dam across the creek for the grist mill. Of their eight children, we know the names of only three, William, Jr., Alexander and Jimmy, their youngest." (p. 5-6). Elsewhere it states that Jimmy was about 7 yrs. old when he was killed. I'm pretty sure the monument doesn't list everyone's names, just "William Davis & family", "William Pettigrew & family", "William Hall & family" or something similar. thanks for the links on local history, I thought the one from the LaSalle Co. Historical Society was especially good! Hi, Good to hear from you. I remember that statue of Shabbona when I was a little girl, it is supposed to be nearby. If the weather is nice this week maybe I will take a drive over there. I am still off work. I go back to the doctor on Tuesday, but I will probably be off till April 1. I can walk, but can't climb ladders and such. Greetins from Streator According to Baldwin's 1877 History, page 394 "William Munson has recently erected a fine marble monument at the grave, where the fifteen victims were buried. It is in view of the public road, leading from Freedom to Earl, on the northeast side of the creek, and as the white column meets the view, the traveler will instinctively heave a sigh of sympathy for the tragic fate of the first pioneers. The inscriptions are as follows: Wm. Hall, aged 45. Mary J. R. Hall, aged 45. Elizabeth Hall, aged 8. Wm. Petigrew, Wife, and two Children. Davis, Wife and five Children. Emery George Killed May 20th, 1832 Also John Hays of Peru had daughter who married John Myers. John Hays, and wife, came from Tennessee in 1830; built a cabin on the Illinois bottom.....His children were: one daughter, married Mr. Davis,, and with her husband, was killed at Indian Creek, in 1832; Harrison, is in Bureau County; James, and two other sons. .... If Harrison, brother of Mrs. Davis, died in Bureau County after 1877, you might be able to get his obituary. Might list his sister's first name? Does anyone have the names listed on the monument? I'm looking for William Davis wife's name and the names of the other 4 children that died in the massacre. I have William Jr, Stephan and Alexander who all survived the attack, James (Jimmie) who was taken captive along with the Hall girls but killed because he couldn't keep up. Thanks to everybody who responded about Shabbona. I found a picture of the monument on the DeKalb county site. Still have not found a picture of statue. Seems to me there was a small museum in that area. Anyone know the hours or phone number? Or directions. I do know there are two parks. A relative came down from Chicago for a picnic, went to the wrong one. The postings about the early settlers has been very interesting. Is there a site for La Salle County History? A site with a short article, a picture or two, and contacts/links from more information. The DeKalb site was really great. Thanks again, Joanie
Hi Joanie, Thanks for that info. I don't know if Thomas Grimes was married before, although I think it very likely as Mary McGrath was a 37 year old spinster, living with her uncle Peter White in Wenona in the 1910 census. I couldn't find her after that, but now I know where to look in the 1920 census. I wonder if your friend who will look up Mary Grimes' obit would at the same time look up Thomas McGrath who has an obit in the Streator paper which said "formerly of this city" dated Dec. 9, 1925. The White cousin who sent me that info was unable to read it when she was last in Streator. I think this is Mary Grimes and Nellie Schultz brother. I am sorry to hear you are not well. I very much hope that you feel better soon. Joy
<<Doesn't the Museum at Utica have a display of clothing, vest, hat, etc., worn by the people who died? Don't remember whose clothes they were.>> That's the LaSalle Co. Historical Society museum in Utica...and yes, they have a bonnet worn by "Jennie" (Mary Jane Rebecca Williams Hall) and I think a vest worn her husband William Hall. There are holes and some bloodstains in both. Mrs. Hall was said to have been shot in the head and her husband in the chest. Both were supposed to have been scalped, as Rachel & Sylvia recognized the hair at a war dance held the night after the massacre. A lot of historians think that some of the Pottawatomi with a grudge against Davis took advantage of Black Hawk's uprising to settle some scores. Black Hawk insisted the few Sauk involved kept the Pottawatomi warriors from killing Rachel & Sylvia Hall until they were turned over to the Winnebago (a neutral tribe) in Wisconsin. No one really knows what happened or why the girls were spared. I have a transcript of William & Jennie Hall's probate papers from the summer of 1832 (original on file at the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild, can you believe it?) if anyone's interested in seeing what they owned and who got what at their estate sale. regards, Sandy

Hi, "Jacob Hagi was born in Rossau Canton, Zurich, Switzerland, August 15, 1842. He came to the United States in 1866, locating in LaSalle County. Mr. Hagi married Sophia Messersmith, March 11, 1872. She was a native of Germany, having arrived here in 1867. To this couple were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. They had located in Ransom in 1876 and that is where all of their children were born. Their children were Frank R., Will H., Barbara (Mrs. Fred Raguse), and Minnie (Mrs. Herbert Stevens). Jacob Hagi was a prominent businessman in the community. He built the "Hagi block" in 1894 in which he sold hardware, furniture, implements for the farm, lumber and building supplies. His card also advised that "undertaking was a specialty". At the time of his death in May of 1905 it was said that his efforts and influence had led to the stability of Ransom. His funeral was very large and the service was given both in English and German. Frank R. Hagi..... Descendents still living in Ransom include the Robert Hagi, Phyllis Hagi Canale, Donald and Marvin Stevens families. J. H. Schultze is on a list of village presidents. Joanie, thank you for the information from the Ransom Centennial Book. Since Frank R. Hagi was Helen Schultze's father, when you have time, would you please continue what the history book had to say about him? I would be most grateful.
