    1. [ILLASALLE] Looking for info and relatives
    2. Hi, Just checking to see if anyone here is researching the following family's from Utica (and Ottawa) " Pierce, Stewart/Stuart, Hadley and Brooker. I know I had some relatives that were still living in Lasalle Co., in the 60's but lost contact over the years. Other Lasalle Co. Family would be Malhorn and Henning. Most of these relatives came to Lasalle Co. between 1850 to 1870's. Most are buried in Oak Hill Cem. in Utica. I have found much info on these familys and would like to share, Quite a bit of info came from the Lasalle Co. Guild and the Lasalle Co. Courthouse, however I live in Colorado so makes it tough to visit. I do plan to make another trip this summer. Thanks, Al Pierce

    1. [ILLASALLE] Re: Naturalization in LaSalle
    2. Hi Dan, Naturalizations are confusing because, over time, different courts were responsible for naturalizing citizens. I know that IRAD in DeKalb has copies of LaSalle County records, but only into the 1880s. However, you might start with the following NARA record, also available on LDS microfilm: Soundex index to naturalization petitions for U.S. District & Circuit Courts, Northern District of Illinois and Immigration and Naturalization Service District 9, 1840-1950 Order the film covering the surname you are researching, check the index, and it will tell you what court conducted the naturalization. You'll then have to contact that court for the actual records. Hope you find them, Lynn >> > I am looking for where to write to obtain naturalizations for folks who did > so in the 1900s-1910s. 2. Dear List, I hate to clutter the list with thanks, but as I had trouble receiving LaSalle postings for a few days, I don't have email addies for those whose responses were forwarded to me, and can't thank all individually. So I'll take this opportunity to thank one and all - you are a terrific bunch of people. Regards, Susan Dobson

    3. I put off writing some relatives and because of a class I'm taking, I finally had to do it. Some never responded but several swamped me with missing information and I have made some new friends. I encourage you to do it right away. You won't be sorry. Besides, Genealogists ARE odd. We run around looking for dead people! *>) Peg > > Now I must gather my courage I'd like to write them, but am worried they will think me odd.

    2. Joanie, Thank you for responding - this is a great list, with great people. I'm so glad you mentioned Starved Rock - my parents spent their honeymoon there, but that was over 50 years ago, so I wasn't sure what the status was. I will indeed take a membership in the Guild, and have high hopes of breaking down a few brick walls. Now I must gather my courage - I know there are still descendants of my g-grandfather, Adam Sheblia, living in LaSalle. Their branch of the family goes by Shebilla as a surname, and I have found addresses for them while searching online. I'd like to write them, but am worried they will think me odd. We also evidently have another branch, the Grusks, with whom my aunt keeps in touch, so that I will leave to her. Anyways, thank you for your recommendations and help - this should be a lovely sentimental journey! Regards, Susan Dobson

    3. Greetings from Streator, The Guild in Ottawa is THE place to stop. But, I had to go to Peru this morning, and we came back by way of Utica and Starved Rock. I know you will be busy with research, but take time to go to "The Rock". The food at the lodge is good and it is so nice to sit outside and have "cake and coffee", and look over all your discoveries. The Sunday brunch is awesome, but you have to make reservations. And, if you go to the Utica/La Salle county museum, visit the locks. Going south out of Utica, before you cross the Illinois river turn left (east). Signs are posted. Not because you want to visit the locks, but the view of the Starved Rock Park is worth it. Hope you enjoy your visit, Joanie "Nichols, Larrie" wrote: > > Susan, > > I can't speak for other researchers, but I have personally found the help at > theLaSalle County Genealogy Guild extremely helpful (thank you Jean). 3. I found copies on an LDS microfilm roll. They were done at the county level. There were two types of documents. A petetion for naturalization and the actual naturalization paper. I have printed out copies of that with documentation of the location of the roll and the volume numbers. I have not written for paper copies. My great Grandfather's last name is spelled 7 different ways on his papers. 3. Greetings from Streator, Streator Daily Free Press Saturday, June 14, 1902 OLD SETTLER DEAD. Mr. Henry Riss died at the hospital this morning about 10 o'clock, aged 69 years and six months. Mr. Riss was one of the old residents of this vicinity, having settled on a farm in Otter Creek township thirty-six years ago. He was born in Germany on the 21st day of January 1833. His wife died eleven yeas ago the 28th day of this month. Mr. Riss leaves surviving him three sons, William, Joseph and John, one step-son George Brooker, and two daughters, Mrs. Henry Voight and Mrs. William Bruner. He was an uncle of Mr. George Riss of this city. Mr. Riss was a man of strict integrity, and was very industrious, and had accumulated quite a fortune. He had the good will of all who knew him, and was in every way an exemplary citizen. He had not been well the past few years, and a part of the time the past year he boarded at the Park Hotel. About a week ago he went to the hospital, and gradually grew worse until the end came. The body will be taken to the old home farm 6-3/4 miles east and 1 mile north of Streator, now occupied by the son John, and the funeral services will be held, Monday. The cortège will leave the house at 12:45 for Missal, where the services will be held. The interment will be made in the Funk cemetery near Kernan.

    3. Greetings from Streator, There are three Gernetz' listed in the 1917 P.Farmer Directory All living in Ransom area. Carl and wife Elizabeth Rist(spelling from book) Fred and Edna Spangler John and Mae Redman I have two Riss' families living in the area. Probably more, but these are the only two I have. Neither of them have an Elizabeth/Lizzie that fits. Christian (1816 - 1899)and Lena Riss' children were: Frederick, Sophia, George and Mary. Henry (1833 - 1902) and Caroline Wheeler Riss. They are buried in Funk's Cemetery. Henry had a daughter named Elizabeth, but she was born in the 1870s. Could he be a brother of you Lizzie? The Riss family submitted a family tree to the paper in 1993. I think Henry was the oldest Riss on that tree. Also, buried in Funk's Cemetery is John Gernetz d: October 4, 1899 - aged 76 years, 3 months, 18 days. Could he be the father of Carl, Fred and John? I don't have the obituary list for 1899, so I don't know if he had an obituary. However, Henry and Caroline Riss are listed. If you request obituaries from the Streator Library, you might ask for a copy of the Riss family tree, I think it was on page 58 of the special 1993 edition. The name of the submitter will be on that paper. Joanie Mary Lou Marshall wrote: > > Looking for information on Carl Gernentz born Oct 15, 1846 in Germany. Died Sept 27,1918 in Ransom, Illinois.
