Annie Wolfe must have lived in Cumberland Allegany Co., MD while my James and Sarah Withington NELSON lived there. I would say from the tone of her letter that she was about Sarah's age b.1845. Sarah was born in Clear Spring MD and married James Nelson in Martinsburg, WV. James was a RR engineer. The Cumberland area was coal mining country. I know of course that Streator was too. The Nelsons' left Cumberland about 1880 and were in the Streator area by 1889 with a brief stopover in IN. James Nelson went to the so. west as a paid mining Eng. for a Streator Mining company (Gold/Silver). He also went back to the Cumberland area to mine silver . the owner of this mining operation was an Uncle Jimmy Jones from Streator - had lived in the Cumberland area too. This Jimmy Jones also was connected to a McAllister family in Streator. Perhaps my grandparents knew the Wolfe's in Streator and liked the name WELLINGTON therefore. Might Susan have been Susan Ann? I asked about the Wolf(e) family before and did get some local response - there's a connection with a Hillier (sp) family too.(Hillyard) Hillier was an investor of Uncle Jimmy Jones too. I've always thought it odd that my dad never asked about his name. Of course up until the time I transcribed my mother's memoirs, I didn't know that my Karen Ann was specially for my grandma Anna Julia. How I wish some of these good folks were around to ask. Karen James - Sarah Withington Nelson Frank William and Anna Julia Hasenkamper Nelson Frank Wellington Nelson (1919-1982)
Karen, No, I don't. Wellington H. Richmond (b ca 1845, England) and his wife (1873), Susan Wolfe (b 1844, NY; d 1924, IL), had a daughter, Florence (b 1876, MI; d 1925, IL). Susan Wolfe later remarried (1909) to my GG grandfather. A relative said that the daughter married my GG grandfather's son, but all the pieces don't fit together well. Cast of characters here: Wellington H. Richmond (b ca 1845, England) Susan Wolfe (b 1844, NY; d 1924, Mission Twp, LaSalle Co, IL) Wellington & Susan (m 1873, Kane Co, IL) Florence (b 1876, MI; d 1925, Sheridan, LaSalle Co, IL) Susan Wolfe remarried to my GG grandfather (1909) your father, _____ Wellington _____ (b 1919, Streator) Annie Wolfe of MD (writes letter 1885 - 1926) Grandma Nelson (d 1926) However, having the Wellington given name and the Wolfe surnames for your family and mine is a remarkable coincident, not to mention that Susan was born in NY & later immigrated to IL. Do you know more about Annie? Tell me a bit more of your dad's parents. Carol At 10:41 PM -0500 4/10/03, Karen Hangsleben wrote: >Might you know where the name WELLINGTON came from? Hi Joanie, Thanks for looking up the information for me. Yes, the Ransom book has Hannah's death date as 1833 when it actually should be 1883. There are a NUMBER of errors in the Ransom book. Allen (my g-grandfather) died on June 25th & was buried on June 27th in Allen Cemetery. David & Hannah lived in Dwight at the corner of Washington & 2nd or 3rd street sometime after 1870. I think Hannah is listed in the 1860 census as David's wife so I am not sure whey she wouldn't be listed in 1870.She may have lived with Elvina & Dr. Weiler after David died in 1877. Dr. Weiler was a widower but it was the first marriage for Elvina. Barnes & his family are buried in Allen Cemetery but he actually died in Alabama as did Lavira. Elvina died in Tennessee & I believe that Hazael died in Indiana. (Hazael was male by the way!) Lavira married a widower named George Howland & they lived in Ottawa. I think David died at their home & Hannah died at Elvira's home - or it could be visa versa. Thanks, Verna -----Original Message----- From: Joan [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, April 14, 2003 6:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ILLASALLE] Dwight Obituary Greetings from Streator, Do you have the dates of death? Sometimes I think that some of the people on the list may derive benefit from searching the 1880 U.S. census that the LDS church placed online last October. It has certainly helped me find some people I was having difficulty tracking. Go to: http://www.familysearch.org Click on the census link on the left side of the home page. On the next page, select the 1880 U.S. census in the top box. You can then customize searches in many different ways and it won't take long to teach yourself. Notice that you can search for a specific spelling or for soundalikes. Also, you can use the next and previous links to search for neighbors (and maybe relatives) of a specific household. The information usually provides the state or country of birth for the individual and their parents. Good luck! - Adele/Seattle
Greetings, ...from SDFP, Friday, Jan. 11, 1918 White Plague is Cause of Death John G. Patton Stricken After Illness of a Short Duration. John G. Patton, well know Streator man, died at his home 612 East Bridge street, yesterday afternoon at 6 o'clock of tuberculosis, after an illness of the past six months. The deceased was born in Streator, October 9, 1879, and during his early life he worked at the bottle blowers trade, but for the past several years had been a bartender. I couldn't get a look at his obituary, there was a power failure in the downtown area. I still have one more obituary to look up. Joanie
Greetings from Streator, Streator Daily Free Press Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1910 .. Mr. Banks was born in Lanrickshire, Scotland, 78 years ago last New Year's day. It was in Scotland he was married and shortly after moved to America. He was a miner by occupation and followed that work in different parts of Pennsylvania for a number of years, coming to Streator forty years ago. He engaged in mining after coming to Streator for a number of years, or until he became incapacitated for such work. He then worked as day laborer, being employed for a number of years in laying brick sidewalks throughout the city. Later this work proved too hard for him and about six years ago he found it necessary to cease work entirely. Mr. Banks lost his wife about fifteen years ago, which left him without a near relative. A son died seventeen years ago, and a daughter, Mrs. H. Mooney, died while a resident of the far west a number of year ago. The remains were brought to Streator for the burial at the request of Robert Ward and Hugh Patton, both nephews of the dead man. ..from SDFPress His wife, Elizabeth died June 12, 1894 at her home on West Main Street. Her son, Murray was already dead, but her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Mooney? was living in Colgate, Indian Territory at the time. ...from SDFP Murray Banks died August 16, 1892 due to "congestion of the brain". His parents were living at 209 West Main Street. He was about 30 years old and left "a daughter to mourn her loss", no mention of wife?

Hi Joanie------My mother's father was Joseph Patrick Corrigan, who was born in Ottawa on March 2, 1867 and married Marguarite V. Butler in Ottawa on April 20, 1896. Hea passed away on March 2, 1934. His parents were Thomas Corrigan, who was born in Loughlin Parish, Rosscommon, Ireland, He married Margaret Donahue, Milltown Parrish, Mayo, Irelanfd, who was born May 28, 1832. I think that for a time that they lived near Streator with their children.. I understand that another one of their 6 sons was Thomas J. Corrigan, who was born August 23, 1854 in Ottawa, married Mary Carey, on March 22, 1879 in Kinsman, Illinois and that Thomas died in September 1928 in Streator, Illinois. I understand that they had: Thomas B. Corrigan, who lived near Streator and married Ella Feebon (sp.) from Streator, on April 19, 1911 and that he passed away on March 5, 1952 in or near Streator. William Corrigan, born January 6, 1887 in Ransom, Livingston County and that he married Bee Connors (Date Unknown) and that he passed away on February 28, 1950 in or near Blackstone, Livingston County,Illinois Francis Corrigan, born April 26,1891 and married Paula Trainor in Streator on April, 3, 1923 in Streator and that they lived in Streator at one time. (I also have a note having a daughter named Margaret , born January 26, 1882 in Ransom, Livingston County, who married Eugene Drinan in 1912. I believe that she passedf away in November, 1965 in or near Odell, Ill ) (I also have a note of another child---Mary, who was born July 21, 1883 in Ransom, who passed away November 24, 1973 in Streator) John (Jack) Corrigan was born March 4, 1858 in or near Ottawa and died November 23, 1929 in or near Sioux City, Iowa. He was buried there . I have no record of his being married or having any children. James J. Corrigan was born in or near Ottawa on January 3, 1862 and passed away January 22, 1931 in Ottawa. I have no record of him being married or having children. William J. Corrigan was born May 28, 1863 in Ottawa and married Mary Ann Brennan on November 28, 1888, in Dwight, Illinois and that he passed away in Sioux City, Iowa, November 28, 1949. I have no record of where he and his wife are buried or if they had children. Michael B. Corrigan is, I believe, the youngest of the brothers and was born November 29, 1869 in Ottawa and married Emma Quinn (Date and Place Unknown). I understand that he passed away in 1936 in Streator. (Except for my grandparents, I do not have any of the descendants of the other brothers and Thomas J. and Mary Ann Carey., but felt that someone else may have that information and have passed it on to you or their existing relatives in one of the areas or it might be a matter of public record.) I have been trying to work on the Family Tree for several years for this side, butb this is as far back or forward as I have gotten. I will really appreciate any help that you or any of the descendants can give me. I understand that one of my grandfather's brothers and some of his family were farmers near Budd, Illinois (Livingston County) Thanks for your help in looking these up. Would you have a local address for an organization like yours in Sioux City, Iowa, if you are unable to find out more about James and William's descendats ? For anyone who may be interested, I have a professioanally made photo of all six brothers as younger men and then of them sitting in the same order ,as much older men, that I would be happy to send a copy to anyone ,who may be interested. They are 9X12 in size. Thanks again and let me know if there is any charge, Dick Corrigan Orland Park, Illinois 60467 [email protected]
