I was checking the other listing of Bazore - Barnhart cemetery and found the following: Riss, Children of Henry and Caroline Charity E. Riss, Died Oct. 1, 1864, aged 1 yr., 9 das. Charley Riss, died Feb. 6, 1870, aged 8 yrs., 7 mos. Frederick Riss, Died Oct. 3, 1867, aged 9 mos., 3 das. Don't remember if I passed them along the last time... Joanie
When I sent the 1880 census information, there was an Archey list as one of the children. The Prairie Farmers' 1917 Directory lists, Archie K. White (Anna Dickerson-wife) as a tenant farmer of 240 acres in Sect. 21 of Earl Township. Joanie
Hi Amy, I'm just going through my e-mail for the past month and found your post about La Salle biographies. Would there be an Ellis White listed? He married Desire Kuney. Ellis was my gr-grandfather. His daughter, my grandmother, came to the SW with her husband (Edward Everett Becker) when he contracted TB. Only her oldest sister, Edie, came to visit, I know that she had about 7 siblings, and little more. Her mother was Desire Kuney, and there's a lot of information on the Kuney family, but it's really Sadie that I want to know about. She was actually sort of a surrogate mother to me and I'm not sure what or where I'd be now without her. Anyway, if you have any information on Ellis's parentage, or anything, I'd love to know. I don't believe it has been microfilmed. The Streator Public Library has some directories on microfilm. The museum has the 1888 and 1898-1899 city directories. The museum is fairly complete after 1900. Joanie Phyl wrote: > > Is the 1888 Streator Directory filmed? Sorry, I don't have a William or Frances (Straton) Ewing. I did find the following: Buried in Cumberland Cemetery (west of Wenona) Esther Ewing, 1823 - August 21, 1877, aged 53 yrs., 10 mos, 22 das. Buried in Riverview in Streator is the Alexander J. Ewing family Alex was born May 31, 1838 in Ohio and he died in 1889. He ran a grocery store in Streator. There was an obituary in the Streator paper for his father who died Sept 1879 in Ohio, shortly after visiting Streator. Also an obituary for Mrs. W. H. Ewing of Grand Ridge who died abt December 24, 1881. (wrong place, wrong time) Hugh Stratton aged 29, was buried September 20, 1899 in Long Point Cemetery. He was a previous resident of Long Point. Parents M. L. and E. V. (Miller) Stratton. The paper in Henry might have more information, like Streator, they covered a wide area. I love reading the messages on this list. Joannie does a wonderful job of helping us with our requests. Joannie, thanks for being there for us in Illinois....and I am glad that you are recovering well. Like most of us, I have some ancestors that are my brickwall. I am looking for the burial place for William Ewing......the last name could be spelled without the last g......perhaps just EWIN. AND his wife, Frances Ewing...or EWIN. My research effort has uncovered the fact that my Gr Gr Grandfather and one of his sons, (my great grandfather) chose to drop the last g in their latter adult years. These are my paternal gr gr grandparents. I have checked with LaSalle county and Marshall county....and would appreciate a check from the Streator Library, if there is an index that can be searched. This couple appeared in the 1880 Fed. Census....Marshall county, Bennington Township. William Ewin Francis Ewin I have traced this couple and their children. I have not been able to find out where they are buried. I have recently found that William Ewin/g died in Sidney, Nebraska. The LDS site states the year of death as 1888. (I have written that submitter with no response as to how he came up with the year.) A volunteer in Cheyenne co. Nebr., has done some library checking for me. There is no record of a burial in that county anywhere for William Ewin/g. Frances is said to have died 17 FEB 1890 in Creston, Iowa. Courthouse searches there by myself and a volunteer have turned up no burial record for her there. So.....could you check the Streator library records. It is worth it to me, since Streator lies so close to where this couple lived in Illinois. I was thinking that maybe there could be a burial record for one or both of them if their families brought them back to Illinois for burial. This Frances Ewin/g was Frances Stratton. I had a wonderful lady in Marshall county help me with burial records for the Stratton's in Marshall county. She found the Stratton burial records in the Rutland cemetery, but nothing for my Frances Stratton Ewin/g or her husband William. I know the timeframe was 1888 and 1890, but I want to think that the family at that time would have documented their deaths with a burial recorded somewhere, even if there was no tombstone marking the grave/s. I will keep looking and do appreciate any help you can give me in Streator. I know this is a long shot, but not an impossibility. Thanks for your attention and time when that permits. Always seeking those elusive ancestors....there is always one more story to find!! Researching: ROMER MADSEN LAFORGE BROWN and the DANISH BROTHERHOOD Dear Fellow Genealogists: I am researching my g-grandfather Christen Rømer (B. 19 jan 1842 in Rutsker, Bornholm, Denmark). In 1881, he emigrated from Bornholm to Illinois. April 16, 1884, the rest of the family, wife Johanne, and children Andrea Marie (Mary), Oliva Elisabeth (Olive), Valdemar (Walter), Dagmar Emilie (Dagmar), and Jørgen Johannes (George) Rømer joined him. Christen "Americanized" his given name to Christian and the surname to Romer. (Although his grave is engraved "Christen" and he may also have used "Roemer," as an alternate spelling. According to my father's notes, "Grandpa started a business tiling farms to drain at LaSalle or Seneca, Illinois. He sent to Bornholm for workers. The workers lived with Grandpa and Grandma. She took care of their money so they could save." [NOTE: My ggf was not a candidate for sainthood. He "borrowed" horses and a team and sold them to pay for his passage to America. He left my ggm with a family and huge debts from his business (misad)ventures. At some point he left again while in Illinois and may have gone to California for a number of years. He may even have taken a second wife. He is buried with other Danish Brotherhood members instead of in the family plot. The family story is that my ggm said, "If he could not be with us in life, he shall not be near us in death!" I'm dealing with a hundred years of familial silence and "bad press."] September 24, 1892, Christian Romer became an American citizen at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He died February 22, 1900, in Chicago. So, I'm assuming that some time between 1881 and 1892--and perhaps later--the Romers lived in LaSalle County. Other than a faulty memory, the only possibility I'm entertaining that the Romers weren't living in LaSalle County would be if Christian and crew commuted by rail. However, that brings up the additional logistics of horses, wagons, tools, and materials. My grandfather Martin Hilbert Madsen, emigrated from Bornholm April 13,1882 to "Chicago" but he's not in the city directories until 1888 when he shows up as a partner in a grocery store. (By trade he was a "glarmester" or master glass craftsman having apprenticed with his father.) The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 shows a single marriage between Martin H. Madsen and Minnie J. Brown in 1891, in Cook County. (Our family oral history indicates Martin's first wife's name as (unknown) LaForge.) Madsen/LaForge or Madsen/Brown had a son in July 1892. LaForge or Brown died some time between that son's birth in July 1892, and Martin's second marriage in June, 1894. Martin remarried June, 1894, to Mary Romer. I am less certain that there is a tie between LaSalle County and Martin Madsen, but he had to be someplace between 1882, and 1888, and the two of them had to meet someplace. I have requested the relevant Illinois birth/marriage/death records for the persons listed above. The 1890 census fragments have no helpful data. Until then, if anybody can offer some help with this mystery, I would be one happy researcher. A check in the LaSalle County directories, the school rolls, or a good yarn about your ggf the farmer getting swindled by some crazy Dane in the 1880's would all be welcome. Best regards, Buzz

Hi---Would anyone know if Roger Cahill is related to the late Tom Cahill, who was related to the late Margurite Butler Corrigan from Ottawa ? I think someone told me that Tom married one of Margurite's sisters. She had several around Ottawa and Streator. I'd appreciate a lookup for information on a WRIGHT family in Streator, around 1900. There would have probably been two daughters, Agnes and Myrtle/Maud. Agnes married William Gray, probably about 1901/1904. They lived on Elm Street in the 1920 census. Thanks for any help, and will be pleased to make a donation for the lookup. Greetings from Streator, Does anyone know where Munster got its name? I have driven by that road sign for 58 years, and always thought someday I would find out. Joanie
