I have in my possession two very old newspapers from Waukegan. One is dated December 31, 1905 (The Waukegan Daily Sun) and the other doesn't have a date on it. Someone should be able to date this paper for me as the mayor of the town of Waukegan was Mayor W.W. Pearce. The first paper is a special edition on a horrible fire at the Iroquois Theatre where 736 people lost their lives (four of which hailed from the area). It is a very interesting article which describes how the lack of proper exits lead to this tragedy. The the four people who were missing at the time of this article were Col. William Reid (known dead), Miss Florence Hutchins, Mrs. Sidney Pinney, Mrs. Reid (missing). The second paper list the "men of power" (my own words) for the Waukegan area. It also shows the houses that some of them lived in and the major businesses in the area. This paper shows a picture of the men and gives a description about them. A few of the names listed are: Andrew Olsen, John S. Morrow, J.F. Bidinger, Jas. L. Mann, E.W. Tobin, Peter McDermott, Wm. Hoban, N.J. Reardon, E.H. Amet (All board of Aldermen of Waukegan). There are many more listed. It is a very interesting paper. If you have a member of your family who was prominent in Waukegan during the time W.W. Pearce was mayor, please contact me and I will happily give you the information listed in the paper. If someone knows the time frame of this paper, please let me know. Thanks for your assistance! Kat
Kat, Pearce was mayor 1903-1904 (one year terms only at that time). Was also mayor 1915-1919. Found this info in the Wakegan web site, http://www.waukeganweb.com Hope that's some help, though not much seeing that he served two terms. However, it's prob the 1903 term as it's close to the dated paper of Dec 31, 1905. I once had first book publications on the Iroquois Theater Fire and the Titanic sinking, but they were lost (stolen really). If anyone in Waukegan still has them, would be nice to have them returned *grin* :) At 08:07 AM 8/24/2001 -0500, you wrote: >I have in my possession two very old newspapers from Waukegan.
