I found it odd there is a the difference in ages of Henry Ames between I think 1850-1860 or 1860-1870...I've forgotten now exactly which one it is....am now thinking they may well be different people. The Portrait & Bio. Album of Lake Co.(printed c1891) lists 5 Ames in it's index but I have not found 5 sketches. There's supposed to be an A. Ames on pg 782...the last page of sketches is pg 782. The only person on that page is Edward P.DeWolf! Anyway, I'm confused as to who is who now. My connection to the Ames is not genetic but through the marriage of Emily (Pratt) Burton to Delos R. Ames. Delos Ames' parents are said to have been Henry & Maria (Raymond) Ames. Maria was Henry's 2nd wife. The PBALC sketch (pgs 587-88) for Delos states his father, Henry, was b. Shoreham, VT 1802 & was educated in NY where he was a teacher for some years. Delos was the elder son, Leroy Judson the younger. Leroy married Eliza Leonard & engaged in farming in Fremont Twp. Henry had been previously married to Emeline BIGSBY, a native of NY. The sketch goes on to state his half brother, A.B. Ames, enlisted in Muskegon Co., in the 3rd Michigan Infantry. His brother, Thomas, J. Ames, belonged to the 51st IL Infantry, enlisted in the fall of 1861. 'He was killed at the battle of Chickamauga. His remains interred on the field where he gallently and bravely gave his life for his country.' -------------- On pg 638 of the same book is a sketch for Amelious C. Ames, 3rd of 5 children born to Henry & Mary Ames both stated as natives of NY & died in Lake Co. Amelious was b. 9/6/1844 in St. Lawrence Co., NY. He owns and operates 125 acres of land in section 21 Wauconda Twp. He enlisted in Co. C. 96th IL Inf at Wauconda on 8/5/1862. There's some Civil War information. The sketch goes on to say he spent some time in Lake Co. after the war, then went to the pineries of MI for 4 years again coming to this county in 1869. On the 10th of Oct. of the same year he married Mary A. Fairweather, daughter of Isaac Fairweather, a native of Yorkshire, England. They had 5 children but the eldest died in infancy. Children are Lydia A., Leaman C. ae 8, Jennie ae 6 & Bessie ae 4. Their home was destroyed by fire 3/13/1891 but they plan to rebuild. ----------------------------- on page 364 is Elijah Ames, deceased, was b.in the town of Concord, Franklin Co., VT in 1813 & died in his home in Kenosha, Wi, Nov,10,1885 when abt. ae 73. His father was Elijah Ames Sr b. in Boston. The family removed to VT where he married Rizpah Whipple. They became residents of NY & then moved westward. 'Our subject was quite young when he went to NY and with his parents he also went to Pennsylvania, settling in Tioga Co., in 1839.' He married Phebe T. Ames, a cousin, whose father served in the War of 1812. She was born Tioga Co. In September 1840, just after their marriage, they started westward with intentions of settling in IL. They settled in Antioch Twp. There were 8 children born, all b. in Lake Co.; Walter, Lydia, Edmund H. (see below), Ripzah, Truman, Waite, Lillian and Ella. ----------------- pg 367: Edmund H. Ames M.D. b. 10/19/1846 served in Co. H 153rd IL Infantry. He spent 2yrs in Lake Co. after the war, then worked in IA from 2/1868 until the following October. He went to Pa in the spring of 1869, entering the Normal school at Mansfield & afterward went to school at Ann Arbor, MI. He married Ellen Grandy 4/21/1875 in PA who was born there. They had 2 children; Fred E. & Lizzie B. ------------- There's more in these sketches but I have neck problems & can't hold & type everything. I think I've included most if not all of the pertinent information. I have noticed errors in some of my family's sketches, some duplication of sketches, missing sketches & paging out of sequence. I wish the original notes used to create this book were availble. I bet there was a LOT more information than what was actually printed in the book!
