In the meantime I did find some handy web sites. Go to your browser address line and type in - http://community-2.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/nyarrivals/ or better yet copy and paste this link address into the address space in your browser. When you get the page, "Researching Passenger Arrivals into New York", scroll down to step 4. to the third paragraph, years and film numbers. Since Castle Garden was only used from Aug 1855 to Apr 1890 you will want the block of films starting with #0002246. This whole web sight is a treasure of information of just the kind you need as it has good advice on searching through the numbers by plugging them into FHL Catalog in the film/fiche search.
