    1. ([ILLAKE])Surname Shout Out
    2. Richard Berkheiser
    3. Hi everyone! Just letting you know that the lists are back up and running again so to "celebrate" our return I'm initiating a first ever Surname Shout Out. A Surname Shout Out works like a Roll Call where we all post an ancestor we're totally stumped on. Please be sure to add vital statistics like date of birth, death, marriage, etc. Happy Hunting! 1. [ILLAKE] Fremont Public Library gets new microfilm reader
    2. P.M. McLaughlin via
    3. I'm sure folks who want to look at microfilm will be happy to hear that we have a new microfilm reader/scanner installed and ready to be used. We've had to send people to other local libraries to order out-of-area microfilm, as our old machine died on us for good this past winter. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Fremont Library, we now have a View Scan I from ST Imaging. We are still learning out to use all the features on this equipment, but at least now people can view and print images. Anyone interested in ordering film for viewing at our library should contact the adult reference desk for assistance. Pam McLaughlinFremont Public Library1170 N. 1. Re: [ILLAKE] Tax Records around 1866
    2. Marleen Van Horne via
    3. Charlotte, Many records for Lake County, Illinois have not been micro filmed. This appears to be a conscious decision made by the powers that be in the county, to deny access to these records and the information they contain, to the public, through organizations such as the Family History Library. I took all of the information I could find in the FHL on my ancestors in Lake County, then in 2005, I actually visited the courthouse in Waukegan . There is a wealth of information in that building that is available nowhere else. I was particularly interested in land and property records. I found more than I could possibly imagined, and the people in the clerk's office were extremely helpful and the coping costs were nominal, but nonetheless, you have to go there to find it and get copies. My recommendation is that you get everything you can from the FHL through your local FHC, then if possible go to Waukegan. That way you will have a list of what you are looking for before you get there. I do not recommend using record abstracts to document your genealogy, only use them as indexes to what might be available, then get copies of the original records. Marleen Van Horne -- When the people, who made the music of your youth, begin dying of old age, you know that you, too, are old.

    3. I get that they can't afford a head stone for everyone, but there should at least be a monument then with all of their names listed.  Not sure that I have anyone there, but I agree that something should be done.  Montrose was just collecting funds to put up a similar monument for the "Flu" victims.  I wonder if there is anyone who would take up the mantel for this cause? Happy New Year to you! And let's hope we have good genealogical luck in 2015. Ian and I have found nothing new re: David Ardis MacLean, Jr. Patton! There was a possibility that he died in Virginia (his SS info noted his last SS payment was to an address in VA), but I searched all the death records there for the year in question and no luck. It either wasn't the correct info or David Patton died out of state. I'm on an Illinois and a Virginia genealogy group on Facebook, though neither has been able to help me, understandably. I recently took a DNA test through Family Tree DNA...no connections to any Pattons, but you never know. Yes, I believe, too, that -- for whatever her reasons -- Carmene lied about her names, her age and her family background. Probably not terribly unusual for immigrants to the US (I know some of my own were fuzzy about details). And then, over time, the lies became the truth. It does make it very hard to trace her, though! Will keep in touch! Meredith Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm still searching too. The story that I heard from Carmene's granddaaughter was that Papa (Normand Patton) broke his back. David had to go to New Orleans to get papers from a safe deposit box because Normand couldn't travel. That's supposedly where he found his birth information. Keep me posted on anything you find.
