The Libertyville Comm__ ___ was organized Monday evening at a very enthusiastic meeting at which over fifty men were present. Refreshments were served at the conclusion of the meeting and fifty men signed their names as members, a surprisingly good record for the first evening. These officers were elected: President - N.L. Maher Vice President - Paul Ray Secretary - T.F. Smalle Treasurer - D.E. Ellsworth Directors - E.A. Bishop, R.F. Wright, G.C. Gridley, Wm. Preston, James Swan. Golf Course at Great Lakes Commander W.A. Moffett of the Great Lakes Naval Training Station is a great believer in the value of "Jack at play," and encourages any form of sport he thinks beneficial to the men under him. Recently the Great Lakes Golf Club was formed, with the commander as president. A nine hole course, measuring 2,775 yards, was laid out over the parade grounds, and although many of the officers are new to the sport it has proven popular, the club having a membership of thirty-four. 3. We would like to invite you to revisit The POORHOUSE STORY website (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com where we have just posted a picture postcard of the Co. Poor Farm in Libertyville, LEWIS County. If you have recently visited our site, you will need to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material. If you are new to the site, DIRECTIONS: at the homepage (link above)click on POORHOUSES BY STATE and then click on ILLINOIS on the table of states. You will find the link to the photo near the middle of the page if you scroll down past the one illustration. There are other pages on PHS which can help you gain a better understanding of poorhouses; they are all linked off the homepage (left side) and include: HISTORY page, LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS, and FEATURED ARTICLES. We also archive our (almost) monthly newsletters which review all new postings since the previous newsletter. (You can find the link to these on the left side of the homepage, as well as a link to subscribe to the newsletter on the lower right side of the homepage.) Our information will only grow through the suggestions and submissions of readers like you! If you wish to e-mail me, please do so off-list (because I cannot maintain subscriptions to all the lists to which we post)... and include in the subject line the name of the state and county with which you are concerned. I am hoping that someone can help me out here. Does anyone know where I could locate a paper or article for this occasion? 3. If I hope I am thinking of the right cemetery, the one I am thinking of is on Grand ave in Waukegan. Union cemetery is made up of two cemeteries, Echo and I believe Congregation cemeteries. The mausoleums were in Echo cemetery. The largest of the mausoleums was leveled about 5 years ago to make room for Celozi Ford's parking lot and I do not know what they did with the remains. 3. If you can get a copy of the original insurance application by a member of the Modern Woodsman, you will get a gold mine of information. I found a copy of my husband's grandfather's application in some old papers. It had where he was from, when and where he came to the US. His wife maiden name, marriage date and whether his grandparents, parents and syblings were dead or alive and their ages. It gave me what I need to get started on his line. Mary Fran

I received a letter from Gail Lewis,Historian, Public Relations. She was unable to find a file for my family member and she suggested I write to Woodmen of the World/Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society at 1700 Farnam Street, Omaha, NE 68102 or Woodmen of the World/Assured Life Association at PO Box 266000, Highlands Ranch, CO 80163-6000. She said both of these fraternal benefit societies spun off of Modern Woodmen following a leadership dispute in 1890. I wrote to both of the above just yesterday so of course I haven't heard back. 3. Hi, I have read about the Modern Woodsmen and never thought too much about it untill I was trapiesing around the cemetary on Memorial day in contest with my brother to find the oldest death date. Up ahead I said there's a tree stump with a plaque on it. I couldn't believe they's put a plaque on a stump , well the stump was made of stone for the "Modern Woodsmen of the World". It was too neat.
