    3. This is not specific to what you're asking but just thought you might want to know. In the late 1800's and early 1900's many Lithuanian families moved to this particular part of Waukegan (the name Yokubaitis sure sounds Lithuanian). These families started St. Bartholomew church on the corner of eighth and Lincoln streets in the mid to late 1890's (Lincoln is about two blocks over from Adams). St. Bartholomew Catholic Church merged with St. Joseph(started by German families in the 1860's, about 12 blocks from St. Bartholomew) to form Holy Family Parish East and West sites around 1996. Both churches are still currently holding mass, but sadly the parish has recently bought the old calvary way temple on the corner of Keller and Belvidere and will be moving there and selling both landmarks in a few months. There is a web site for Holy Family and it has an old picture of St. Bart's as well as a short history, I can't remember the address but I found it on a search engine. 1. [[ILLAKE]: ] PALMER in Waukegan
    2. Jean Ann Palmer
    3. I would like to thank everyone in this wonderful newsgroup for their help. This is my first venture into American family history and I am delighted with just how much information is available at your fingertips. I have been tracing the PALMER family since 1981. All in England up until recently. Matthew PALMER arrived in Waukegan in 1852 with his wife Eliza and eight children. Another daughter was born the same year they settled in Waukegan. In 1854, Charles WHITEHEAD and his new bride Susannah joined the family in Waukegan, Lake Co. and they settled in Avon, Lake Co.. Charles WHITEHEAD was a Farmer and his ancestors had been Farmers in Easton-on-the-Hill for many generations. Susannah was Matthew PALMER's niece. Susannah's father John PALMER was Matthew's older brother. John was also a Gamekeeper in Easton-on-the-Hill, a village on the same Burghley estate where Matthew worked. The Burghley Estate stands right on the border of Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and Rutland. Yes, the Estate is still there and the magnificent house full of priceless works of art is still open to the public. I have been there and I still have the guide book. Frederick PALMER, Susannah's brother, travelled out with the newly wed couple. According to a family legend, Frederick is said to have perished in the Civil War, but so far I have not been able to locate him. Matthew PALMER was actually born in Mundford, Norfolk in 1807. The gentry never used local men as Gamekeepers and they didn't like them marrying local girls. I expect they were afraid that their Gamekeepers may turn 'blind eyes' to a spot of family poaching if they were local men. Another brother, George, may also have been a Gamekeeper. Research on George's life is in progress...... If anyone else is tracing this family's origins, I have extensive records going back to 1685 in Mundford, Brandon, Thorndon, Barningham and Stoke Ash in Suffolk, England. Thank you one and all and happy hunting to you all, Jean Palmer in Victoria, B.C. Canada. P.S. I was born in the town of Northampton, England.

    3. The web page of the Waukegan Public Library is http://www.waukeganpl.org Click on "Ask A Reference Question" and then "Online Reference". At the "Online Reference" you can request a search for an obituary. They will reply after they have done the search. I have never had to wait more than a week for a response from them. If they find what you are looking for they will ask for your address and mail it to you. 3. To Jean in Victoria Canada, I've been following your query. If you know where the accident occurred and the newspaper it was printed in, it may be available from a local library. As an example I was looking for a relative who died in the 1940's. The Waukegan Public Library has a free service, and they will do obituary searches for you, as long as you have an approximate date of death. When they did a search for me, they found a news article about the death instead of an obituary. They sent me a copy of it. I have done a large portion of my queries via e-mail. There are a tremendous amount of resources available on the internet for Illinois. Mary >From: "C. 3. Susie, I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a city census. Source is 1900 Census Index for Waukegan Illinois: Enumeration District 142. McCanney owned a saloon at 107 S. Genesee St. (old numbering). Their residence was 137 N. Sheridan Road in 1919. The census is not available on line, but I believe the Waukegan Historical Society has a copy. -Brenda
