    1. [[ILLAKE]: ] PALMER property in Waukegan.
    2. Jean Ann Palmer
    3. Hello all Lake County researchers. Recently I sent for some archived papers regarding the property Matthew Palmer owned in Waukegan. No actual street address is given. The property is described as follows. Quote: Lots 10 and 11, Block 7. In McKays second addition to the town of Little Fort, now the city of Waukegan. Between 1865 and 1869 many repairs were done to the property. There is a list of names of who worked on the property and the supplies used. E.G. 10 May 1865 Mr. J. Brown supplied lumber posts costing $49. 15. " " " Mr. B. Dodge supplied hinges costing $ 8. 25. Does anyone know where I can find an old map giving the location of the property? Also would anyone be interested in a list of the names of the men who were in business in Waukegan during these years? I am willing to type in the whole list if anyone is at all interested. Happy Hunting, Jean Palmer in Victoria, B.C. Canada.

    2. Dear Kat, The only Bauer listed in the book for Waukegan is an Adam Bauer, listed as a laborer. The family may have moved after the writing of the book, which was sometime prior to its publication in 1877. I don't know of any reprints of the book - perhaps others on the mailing list might know. Sorry for the lack of info. val peiler

    3. Thank you for this Val. These old books are priceless. You are very lucky to have found a copy. My PALMER family in Waukegan is confusing as there were two Fred. Palmers. They were cousins. I know what Fred son of Matthew did for a living. He was a harness maker. The Fred I am looking for was son of John. And John didn't go to America, he stayed in Northamptonshire, England. Fred, son of John emigrated in 1854. He came with is newly wed sister Susannah and her husband Chales WHITEHEAD. This last family has been researched by another descendant. So this may well be 'my' Fred. who was renovating feathers. That sounds like a curious occupation. Perhaps it doesn't mean feathers as we are thinking about them. e.g. Feathers from a bird. I will keep on searching for more about my elusive Fred. Happy Hunting, Jean. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 13, 2001 5:35 PM Subject: [[ILLAKE]: ] Re: [[ILLAKE]: ] Re: [[ILLAKE]: ] Re: [[ILLAKE]: ] Lake County 1870 census. > Dear Jean, > I have an original copy. 2. I'd love to find a copy of this book also. I have a few news papers from Waukegan from the very early 1900's. It shows some of the prominent people of Waukegan during that time. I would also like to find out information on the Bauer family that originally built the house that was located at 2713 Cornelia Avenue in Waukegan. I have pictures of two members of that family and would like to know how to contact them. If you know anything about the "Eddie" Bauer family in Waukegan during the late 1800 through early 1900's I'd love to hear about them. Thanks! Kat

    1. [[ILLAKE]: ] Re: [[ILLAKE]: ] Lake County 1870 census.
    2. Dear Jean, While I do not have access to the census for that year, I can tell you that both Palmer names you are looking for appear in the 1877 book Past and Present of Lake County. George Palmer is listed as owning his own farm in Hainesville, IL. A "Fred Palmer" is found in Waukegan, and his occupation is listed as "feather renovator". Just a guess, but if this is your ancestor, perhaps he was wounded in the war and thus required to find an occupation less strenuous than farming? Hope this is of some help. val peiler

    3. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! This is so kind of you to let me know. I do know that George was injured in the Civil War. Do you know if I could buy this book please? If you can give me an address or publisher I would be eternally grateful. I have just purchased a book of old photographs of Waukegan from their Historical Society. It is a lovely book and gives me some ideas of what life was like for the early pioneers. The Palmer family had a tragic start to their new life. Arriving in Waukegan in 1852 with 8 children and a new baby arrived seven months later. The eldest son was killed in an accident in 1854. The poor father never recovered from the shock and died himself some 20 days later. Then they lost their 12 years old daughter the following year. Your message has given me a great deal of help. Thank you friend. Blessings and Happy Hunting, Jean in Victoria, B.C. Canada. Where it is SO hot, we are melting. We are not used to this kind of tropical weather. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 13, 2001 11:17 AM Subject: [[ILLAKE]: ] Re: [[ILLAKE]: ] Lake County 1870 census. > Dear Jean, > While I do not have access to the census for that year, I can tell you that > both Palmer names you are looking for appear in the 1877 book Past and > Present of Lake County. 3. There are numerous ways of trying to obtain copies of these papers. I would assume he was naturalized in the North East region. The state is divided by region and court. I can't remember the names of the 2 courts where he may have made his request. Depending on which of the 2 courts he submitted his papers and which region of the state will determine where the papers are archived and where you can request them and/or search for them. You can go to the LDS web page and do a search for Lake County records. They have some of the naturalization records filmed. This includes the original request papers. His particular papers may or may not have been recorded. (if you search the LDS you can go to my web page and I have set up a page explaining how to do a "place" search on the LDS page.) You will want to search Lake County, Waukegan or Illinois, looking for naturalization records. I believe Northwestern University is the archives for the Northeast Region which would include Chicago, Waukegan, etc. They do have a web page listed under the State of Illinois web page. You can write a letter to the National Archives-Great Lakes Region, 7358 South Pulaski Road, Chicago, Ill 60629 and they will file a freedom of information search for you. Include as much detailed information and in your case, include a copy of the paper you have. Ask them what kinds of papers are available. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. The other source I am aware of is at http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/aboutins/foia/index.htm. Let me know if this helps and contact me at [email protected] if you need any more help.
