Can't get any where with www.waukeganweb.com, am I doing some thing wrong?? thanks
Kat, I wonder if these names are mentioned in either newpaper you have? George Henry BREAN, mygreat, great uncle, was ( according to an article in the Waukegan Gazette, Nov. 21, 1903) "one of Wkgn's most prominent and successful contractors". Also Ira A. WORSFOLD, according the same article was "the leading architect of the city". George married Ira's sister, Elizabeth, in 1874. Ira's father was Richard Worsfold. George H. Brean built "stores of Yeoman, Cornia & Fox, and Dietmeyer and residences of Steele, Lyon, Lindsay, Knox, Compton, Pearce, Hutchinson, Kirk ..." (Portrait and Biographical Album of Lake County, Illinois, 1891, pg. 323 ) He also built "..Lake County jail, German Catholic Church, Father Gavin's residence, Lindsay building, Partridge building, Stewart building, Coon building, residence of Nelson A. Steele and many others." (History of Lake County p. 705) I wonder if either George Henry Brean or any of the Worsfold names are mentioned in your paper. Thanks in advance. T. Ives
Kat, To figure out date of paper, could it possibly have obits in it.? Then ask the Wkgn Library reference people to find that obituary for you? You could give them the two time periods that someone just supplied on this list. Along the same lines, maybe you could find mention of business openings, new political or social happenings, etc. Then get in touch with the Wkgn. Historical Society. I'm sure they would be able to guess the date of the paper.
Kat, Pearce was mayor 1903-1904 (one year terms only at that time). Was also mayor 1915-1919. Found this info in the Wakegan web site, http://www.waukeganweb.com Hope that's some help, though not much seeing that he served two terms. However, it's prob the 1903 term as it's close to the dated paper of Dec 31, 1905. I once had first book publications on the Iroquois Theater Fire and the Titanic sinking, but they were lost (stolen really). If anyone in Waukegan still has them, would be nice to have them returned *grin* :) At 08:07 AM 8/24/2001 -0500, you wrote: >I have in my possession two very old newspapers from Waukegan. I have in my possession two very old newspapers from Waukegan. One is dated December 31, 1905 (The Waukegan Daily Sun) and the other doesn't have a date on it. Someone should be able to date this paper for me as the mayor of the town of Waukegan was Mayor W.W. Pearce. The first paper is a special edition on a horrible fire at the Iroquois Theatre where 736 people lost their lives (four of which hailed from the area). It is a very interesting article which describes how the lack of proper exits lead to this tragedy. The the four people who were missing at the time of this article were Col. William Reid (known dead), Miss Florence Hutchins, Mrs. Sidney Pinney, Mrs. Reid (missing). The second paper list the "men of power" (my own words) for the Waukegan area. It also shows the houses that some of them lived in and the major businesses in the area. This paper shows a picture of the men and gives a description about them. A few of the names listed are: Andrew Olsen, John S. Morrow, J.F. Bidinger, Jas. L. Mann, E.W. Tobin, Peter McDermott, Wm. Hoban, N.J. Reardon, E.H. Amet (All board of Aldermen of Waukegan). There are many more listed. It is a very interesting paper. If you have a member of your family who was prominent in Waukegan during the time W.W. Pearce was mayor, please contact me and I will happily give you the information listed in the paper. If someone knows the time frame of this paper, please let me know. Thanks for your assistance! Kat

On a recent whirlwind tour of family history sites in Lake County, I attempted to find relatives in the Millburn Cemetery, without access to an index. No luck. Can anyone give me a lead on contacting the Millburn Cemetery Board? Did not find this cemetery indexed in any of our Lake County Genealogical publications - checked the Fremont Library etc. Maybe another member knows if an index exists? Thanks. Bob
To add to Carol's comment, you can go to the Waukegan Public Libraries reference page and make your request via e-mail. Make sure you include your full name and mailing address with your request. Be as specific as possible with a date. It can either be the actual date of death or the burial date. I usually get the obits within 2 weeks. http://www.waukeganpl.org/adref.html Mary http://communities.msn.com/Genealogy2000 [email protected] >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [[ILLAKE]: ] Re: [[ILLAKE]: ] Newspapers >Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2001 15:33:08 EDT > >Write to the Waukegan Public Library, Jim Keith is reference librarian. >Ask >for a copy of the obit you want with name, and date of death. Thanks Ray, for your suggestion. I am in Florida so using the local Library is not an option. Donna
You may try the library in town or history social person. Hi all, I have been researching a member of my husbands' family without much luck. His name was FRED BELLOWS and he was an alderman in the 5th ward in Waukegan in 1904 thru 1908. Does anyone know where I might dig for information on the aldermen back then? Also I did find his name in a directory from Lake County and it gave his residence as MORROW FLATS, no # or anything else. Does anyone out there have any idea where that may have been? In addition to the Morrow Flats, the directory said he was an agt.-VAL- BLATZ BRG. CO. I sure would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks, Donna
Does anyone have any information regarding the following Baldwins, who lived in Lake Forest, Ill in 1900-1907? John & Sarah Baldwin, mother & father. Daughters-Ruth & Sarah Baldwin. Son-Joseph Baldwin. Ruth married John White, moved to Roickford, Ill about 1904 and had 3 children that I know of. The daughter Sarah never married. Joseph Baldwin was married twice, once to Flora Mead, the 2nd time to Sarah (Sallie) Fish. John Baldwin was born in England and came to the States in 1871 with his daughter Emma (my Grandmother, who moved to Kansas about 1878)and his son, Joseph. He remarried after he arrived, Ruth & Sarah were born to that marriage. Joseph and Flora had 2 daughters, Frances and Margaret. They were very young when he and Flora divorced. He moved to Chicago (Ravenswood), and later married Sallie, in 1908. Joseph's last address was 2710 N. Lincoln, Ravenswood, Chicago. His place of business was C. Clausen & J. Baldwin, Rogers Park, Chicago, and I believe he planned to move to Rogers Park, to be closer to his place of business. Any help would really be appreciated, I have nothing on the family after 1908.
