Ninth Edition of the Handy Book for Genealogists says " Statewide registration of births and deaths began in 1916. .....They are kept at the Division of Vital Records, State Department of Public Health, 605 West Jefferson Street, Springfield, IL 62702 (to verify current fees, call 217-782-6553). Some county clerks have birth and death records from 1877 to 1916, with a few as early as 1838........." Your best bet would be to contact the County Clerk of the county where your person died. I have paid anywhere from $7 to $10. Each county has different costs.
