I never got a response to my original query from Knox County, but when/if I do, I'll share what I get there. For now, here's what I have: Maria A. Berfield married Jacob Kitlinger. One of their children was Sarah Elizabeth Kitlinger (my source was family contact, but is consistent with a posting on the Knox Co Query Forum that said Sarah lived in Yates City, Elba Township, Knox Co, IL. They spelled her name Kightlinger). I have her birth as 26 Aug 1831 in Crawford Co., PA; and her death as 1 Sep 1905 in Oketo, Kansas. She married Rueben M. Gates 10 Aug 1850, at Elba Township, Knox Co., Illinois. (I'm sorry I can't recall the source. I'm not an expert at this and am just learning the hard way). I can tell you I don't have any vital records to substatiate it, but only oral family history). They had a son, Frank E. Gates. His marriage license indicates he was 27 years old at the time of his marriage, which would make his DOB about 1871. He was born in Yates, Knox, IL. His parents are named on the marriage license. He married "Bessie" Ennis (AKA: Sarah Elizabeth Ennis; easy to see why she went by Bessie with all the Sarah Elizabeths), 16 Aug 1898 at Yates, Knox, IL. She was 22 at the time which means she was born in 1875 or 1876. She was also born in Yates, KNox, IL. Her parents were J. Ennis and Susan Bishop. It was a first marriage for both Frank and Bessie. They had a daughter Fern Irene Gates (don't know how may sibs she had) born 21 Jan 1901, in IL (probably Yates). I knew Fern before she died 13 Mar 1985, in Torrance, CA. She was (is) a very sweet lady, lots of fun and quite musically gifted. On 19 Aug 1924 in Hill City, Kansas -- she married William Wesley McCann. He was b. 29 Jun 1899 in Pigeon, Roane, WV. They had four children, one of which is my husband's father. Since you have both KITLINGER AND GATES, you must also descend from Frank E. Gates.
