I know that many courthouses might charge a basic fee when you mail in a search request as oppossed to requesting a specific record you have a name and date for. At any "in person" experience I have had at Knox, there was a charge for the record..... if found. They have let me stand at the counter and browse thru the big death index book. I'm usually after death records when I'm there. And I have seen others mention being able to go thru immigration/naturalization records in another part of the courthouse. I've noticed the staff at Knox does seem to be unpredictable in their helpfulness towards genealogy. Sometimes they seem bothered, other times not. It does help if you have specific names and a date range to work with. What type of records were you trying to find?
