I don't know anything about the Westfall family but I wanted to make a comment about the census entry. My Knapp family (John Jacob and Sarah) was in Knox county in 1850 and later moved to Appanoose county, IA. Several of the children had "IA" listed as the place of birth, which confused me for a long time because I couldn't figure why the family would move to Iowa, backtrack to Illinois and then move to Iowa again. What I finally discovered is that "IA" was an early abbreviation for Indiana. Iowa on the census is almost always spelled out completely. Remember they didn't have standard state abbreviations back then anymore than spelling was standardized.
