First a big kudos to the contributor of the Galesburg cemetery link and to the City of Galesburg website online cemetery searchable database. If only more communities would have such wonderful helps online like that! I didn't find any of my names but it will be a great help to others. I got an estate settlement on my James White who died March 30, 1884 from Knox County and it was interesting. His widow, Virginia White, was left with three children and not much to work with. It was interesting to note that he must have run some kind of saloon in Galesburg and I wonder where it was. It was a part of their home. There was a funeral and I wonder if any newspaper would have had anything about it. I'm trying to find my lost cousins from this line, if there are any descendants living today. The estate settlement got very convoluted because there was litigation about property owned by the other brothers in Piatt County, IL. There was also mention of an account with the Knights of Pythias and some of my great uncles probably belonged to that organization. Sounds kinda spooky to me :-). A "Burbridge" was paid one dollar for ringing the bell at the funeral of James and the doctor was paid $50+. James and Virginia (Barrett) were married in Fulton County and had three children Maggie listed as Margaret who married a Willis N. Young. I found him buried in Hope Cemetery in Galesburg. He died March 5, 1895 in Las Cruces, NM where he was living temporarily. He left a widow with two daughters, Gladys Florence Young and Bessie Virginia Young. They had a 10-acre property south of the railroad (Burlington Quincy and ???) in Galesburg and were left in dire straights. I wonder how she made it through being left with little money. She and her mother may have remarried and/or moved out of the area. I'm stuck on that. The other daughter of James and Virginia was Luella B. White. She married a John N. Saffer September 27, 1883 in Knox County, IL. I need to try to find them on the 1880 and 1900 census. I also want to find out if they had any children and where any of their descendants might be. James and Virginia had a son, John R. White. I got a marriage certificate for a John R. White who married a Maggie LaBarr in 1888? and the timeframe would be about right. The names don't jive at all and I'm wondering how many John R. Whites there were in Knox County (I posted the marriage cert info awhile back thinking someone might be able to use it someday). Now I'm wondering if they might have lied on it for some reason. They gave their parents as Robert White and Lottie Ramborrgh (close) and said he was German. The Whites came from Lancashire England. Her parents were given as John LaBarr and Ann Elliott, birth Victoria. He said he was born in Galesburg. Will work more on that riddle. In any case, I am interested in any possible descendants of MY John R. White. Does anyone know if Galesburg published city directories in the late 1800's and early 1900's? That's where I am at the moment with the White family. Alice Gless
